Can't Change Desktop Backround?
Dec 14, 2005
I became infected with Spyware yesterday and bought a program today, which I used to remove it all and now I can't change my wallpaper in display properties! All I can change is the color background. I tried to click on the browse and all that stuff but I can't. I tried to go change the backround but it still stays the same blue. I'm a young kid, and I don't want a boring desktop so can you help me out? I don't want to download anything that will cause me, or my parents trouble so could you explain to me what I need to do, and make the problem ceise without doing anything drastic?

on my laptop the icons don't show up or start bar only the backround. I don't download much so i think it might be a hacker getting in through my unsecure wireless network because this happened to my other laptop as well.

I wanted to change icons on my desktop. so i was looking for the function, went into folder options, then to file types tab, I clicked on file folders, then on advanced. Didn't select anything, clicked ok. After that every time I click on a folder it would open in acdsee. So I went back there, couldn't find a setting to readjust it, then added a new command to open folders in explorer. Now each folder I click on opens in a new window.

I am having difficulty changing my desktop wallpaper. No matter what I do, I cannot put a different picture or wallpaper on the desktop. I have already tried using the right click on the desktop and going into the properties that way. It won't even let me select any of the options for the wallpaper. And I used to be able to go to my photo files and just pick one, right click on it and select the "set as desktop background" option. But now it won't let me change it at all.

I had a desktop highjacker earlier this year, that is originally what actually brought me to TSG forums. I stopped the hijacking but until just now I did not notice I can't change my wallpaper in display properties and all that I can access is the color backgrounds. I try to click on "background" "browse" and "posistion" and can't,The text are gray not black? I also can't scroll through the wallpaper selections! What can I do to change this so that these properties are accessable and adjust able again?

I've been having this problem which started a few days ago with my desktop. I will try to be as specific as I can with regards to the screwed up situation I'm in.I'm running on Windows XP with service pack 2 installed, anti-virus program I use is Norton corp. edition and I also have AdAware 7. I've dutifully updated all my virus definitions and all that. But I can no longer change my wallpaper and it's only a plain blue screen. Funny thing is, when I go into display and select the pic I want to use, it actually shows up in the display area, but nothing happens when I click the apply button, and the background remains plain blue. However, if I click on the default windows XP theme, it changes to that theme, and if I then click back on the photo I want to use, it shows up!!! But a few minutes later, the screen flickers and all is back to plain blue screen again. But when I turn the computer off, a brief flicker of the picture I want to use flashes before shutting down, just what exactly is happening to my machine?
Nothing like this has ever happened to me before!! Also, it seems as if some settings that I've tried to change (for ex, selecting windows media player as the default player for all types of media files) do not stay that way for long. What I mean is, the changes take place right after I've selected them, but a few minutes later, they change back to the way they were which is really frustrating, not to mention creepy as hell as well.I've practically looked thru all that the web has to offer on this issue and has now officially become desperate and despondent. however, after running regedit and following the paths, I can't find the chunk after "Policies" and all I have after that path is an "explorer" folder, no mentioning of wallpaper strings whatsoever.I've also ran norton many times and have the latest updates and etc, I've also ran ad aware and nothing suspicious have to found which might indicate the culprit behind my problem, just a few cookies and trackers.therefore,

I know this is simple but it's driving me nuts that I cannot fix it. The Help desk just updated my computer and now there are boxes surrounding the names of the desktop icons. I do not want these boxes. When I change the desktop color, it changes the color of these boxes. How do I fix this so there is no box and it is clear with just the names. I can't stand looking at this!

However, when I log into the computer with my own user name and password, I get the old NT view. I get an NT view on the rest of the computers in house except the rest of them really are running NT. How do I change the view on my desktop to look like XP?

I got a toshiba laptop with some malware problems. I fixed everything but the desktop properties. I cannot change my desktop background and the browse and position buttons do not work when in display properties. The selection of pictures/backgrounds has been grayed out. I have tried using customize desktop and restarting my pc, and have also tried the reg file from kellyskorner website and this has not worked. I hope that there is a simple solution for this frustrating problem.
