Anyone have an idea why my CPU would constantly spike all the way up to 100%, it seems to be slowing down my computer bad.I have googled a million things and nothing is working. Also having Defrag problems (will not work at all) no error messages, this too I have googled and read all kinds of ways to fix to no avail.
View 6 RepliesI've been having problems with several photo/video editing programs getting the "NOT RESPONDING" screen. Did all the Spy bot, defrag, etc. but still have same problem. I noticed when Task Manager is up (by itself) that the "SYSTEM" line shows spikes from 5 to 50% (not system idle). Is this normal or could it be the problem?
View 14 Replies View Relatedi was previously ripping a lot of music from cd's onto my Sony Vaio, spent about six hours doing it. i shut off my comp that night and turned it on the next day, only to find that it would sit at the xp loading screen for 4 minutes until getting to the login page. along with that, i have random processor spikes and my comp is slowed down. all media, music or vids are lagged and have a digital static to them. i have defraged, and run anti-virus/ spyware programs trying to see if i have encountered a software issue, because that is what it sounds like w/ the processor spikes. i can't figure out what i have done and i'm wondering if anyone can head me in the right direction before i go ahead and reformat
View 10 Replies View RelatedThe CPU usage spikes to 100% regularly according to the windows task manager. It causes sound to shudder. I thought it might be fixed if I updated the sound card drivers, but I made a bit of a mess of it, and there was no sound until I managed to resurrect the previous driver. The computer is quite old, and I have added ram (1.43GB) I've scanned using AVG with no results. I've also defragmented using Smart Defrag.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAn interesting problem. I have a box here that constantly reboots itself. Firstly I thought it may be a cmos problem, so I drained the cmos by removing the battery. Nope. Then I forced the bios to find hardware (I think it's eecd?). No problem finding hardware, but constant reboot. I thought it may be a hard drive problem so I changed the h/d. Nope, still constantly reboots. I took out the cdrom. Nope. I then low level formatted the h/d (the box worked just fine for this, using a cd with the format program, booting from the cd) tried to install a new o/s rebooting again during the install, after several tries got the o/s in the puter boots to the point of xp starting, then reboot or teases the heck out of me by actually opening xp to the welcome screen - then reboot. The box uses XP, the pwr supply is good and I am at a loss.

As of yet, has only crashed whilst playing wow. This is also not due to overheating, as im using a separate fan unit, after heat issues arose Using an acer laptop - aspire 5610 - with Xp proffesional, media center. Also sometimes, after restarting the laptop, and selecting the screen name, it comes up with my background wallpaper, but no icons, start bar, etc - only way to get rid of this is turning the power button off. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my desktop. Every few seconds, my desktop seems to be ''refreshing''. My taskbar seems to disappear for a moment, then returning and reloading the taskbar icons, as if I just logged into windows. This is very annoying, because it's very hard to do anything now because it lags my computer every few seconds. I don't know why it's doing this, or when it started, it just seemed to happen over night. I scanned for viruses with PandaSoftware free online scan and removed some trojans. I also scanned for spyware with Ad-aware, Spyware Doctor, and also used Registry Mechanic and EasyCleaner to fix others problems I think are triggering the problem, but it didn't seem to fix it. Another thing is that sometimes goes away, especially when I'm doing any type of scan, but it can return at any second. It always appears after a reboot.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis has been a problem for me for about 2 years now.I've seen many other people complain with the same problem, but have never seen a viable solution (it's always what brands, switch channels, winsockfix, firmware, etc.)Wireless connect (Belkin Wireless Pre-N card)Win XP SP2 (updated as far as it can go) The problem: Connection becomes unstable(i.e. slow) for about 2-5 seconds, then utterly fails to connect...can't access web, can't access local address(i.e. 192.168.1.1), can't ping anything. When using DHCP on router, doing a repair (i.e. release/renew clear ARP cache, etc.) fixes. If using static IP, then I must assign a new IP. That is, I have to go from say 192.168.1.110 to 192.168.1.111
The problem is not unique to a single ISP & router. I have two networks I can access. For troubleshooting sake, I made them both unencrypted (although WEP, WPA makes no difference to the problem). I have also tried multiple channels in the theory of interference, and channel strength for both networks are good(using NetStumbler). Both networks are on far channels from each other (i.e. 1 & 11), and there are no other networks detected in the area by WinXP or NetStumbler.Net #1) Ameritech DSL Modem ->DLink Router ->Belkin Pre-N Wireless(access point). Router logs in PPoE (the DSL modem's "router functions are turned off"), Belkin access point has NAT turned off. (don't have the exact model numbers in front of me, but it's irrelavent, as the problem transcends manufacturers.
I have a (really) old Compaq Armada M300 running Win2K Pro. It was given to me several years ago from a buddy who upgraded. Old, slow, not much space, but we use it daily as an extremely convenient 'dummy terminal' to get to the internet & work on documents/files on the desktop upstairs.Yesterday afternoon, while nobody was working on it, it suddenly attempted to restart. Just a quirk that I thought wouldn't matter. Wrong it is now stuck in a never-ending cycle of restarting compaq intro screen, then windows startup screen, then an extremely quick blue screen that flashes too quickly for me to even see what it's saying, then restarts all over.I've tried all various ways to start in setup (safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, etc), all different options produce the same result.Since it was given to me on a whim so many years ago, I don't have the install CD, nor do I have a boot disk for it. According to what I've found, I need the CD to create a win2K boot disk.

I got my vaio about 2 years ago, it was second hand, so came with no CDs. nIt has been running fine with no problems until this morning.It is constantly restarting, with a blue screen that flashes up momentarily.I saw something that someone mentioned about it being to do with the wireless, so I've switched that off, and it has stopped restarting. As soon as I switch it back on though, it goes back in to constantly restarting.I can't even seem to get into the menu to start with safe mode. I've tried to restore the system to when it was working fine, but this hasn't helped.

Within a couple seconds after the windows XP bootup splashscreen is displayed, the computer reboots.I am unable to boot into safe mode, or "last known configuration that worked". When I tried the "disable automatic restart on system failure" option, I get an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error on a BSOD, so I googled on that and tried booting off the XP install cd into the recovery console, and trying chkdsk, fixboot, and fixmbr to rebuild the master boot record, but to no avail.

I had a computer that dual boots 98 and XP. Everything was working well
except I had a problem with the hard drive light coming on all the time
when running XP.
I decided to upgrade so I built me another faster computer and moved all
the hard drives to the new one. I did a repair install of both operating
systems to get the drivers right. And it's working fine and faster. BUT,
I am having the same problem with the hard drive light in XP. When I
first boot up and everything settles down, the light goes out. After
about 15 minutes, it starts flickering a little. By the end of a half
hour it is on constantly. Indexing is turned off on all drives. Task
manager shows nothing running that I don't recognize. Idle process is 98-
99%. I've gone into services and stopped every service that's stoppable,
one at a time. None of them made it stop. If I reboot into Windows 98 and
let it sit, the light stays out. I'd like to think it's a hardware
problem and that the drive really isn't running but the light is on. But
now that it's doing the same thing on a second computer and it doesn't do
it in Windows 98, I know that *something* is accessing one of the drives.
I have unplugged my ethernet cable. It isn't that. I have done a
diagnostic startup with nothing but essential files loading but it still
does it. If I boot into XP's Safe Mode, the light will stay out. So it is
just happening in XP in normal mode, no matter what I have running or
don't.
Any suggestions what to look for now? Is there any app available that
would show what is accessing hard drives?

I tend to leave my desktop machine powered on for long periods of time without using it. Is this bad? Good? I have a windows xp, dell dimension p4. Does brand of processor (or Apple) have an impact.
View 3 Replies View Relatedit seems that you are my last hope. it is really crazy and i am almost thinking about just throwing this whole pc out and maybe buying a macbook instead as soon as i got money .i need my laptop (acer travelmate 292, 1.5ghz, 512 MB, insyde software csu bios ver 1.30) for producing music.i do have an external usb soundcard (edirol ua-25) but windows is just driving me nuts.even by only playing one simple MP3 file in winamp (or just having the windows-starting sound during the boot process) and without running any other software, the sound cracks, skips and jerks around. and that with already assigning the buffer size to "very large". if i chose "very small or medium" it would take me probably 10 seconds to play a 3 second mp3 file.i don't think, it is the sound card mainly, since i tried the onboard realtek soundcard stand alone as well and it is almost as bad. it must be something with windows. i already tried de-installing everything else on the computer, running registry cleaners and virus scanners, etc. - and there was one more tip, saying to "give priority to background processes" or something, but it still doesn't work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am getting really frustrated with the Windows updates, have 3 computers, 1, the newest one, constantly warns me to update, the other 2 are older, but all of them XP with SP2 and somehow I managed to stop the bothersome popup. I am on dial-up, no one can call me, since MS constantly updates despite I unclick automatic updates. My Windows folder on the new computer is 3 GB and originally it was under 1 gigabyte. This computer is only 4 weeks old. So if nothing ever gets really fixed, why take up so much space? And why update? Where can I find out just how large the Windows directory should be? My other old laptop, where I reinstalled the original 6 year old version of XP and then from the disk Microsoft has sent me SP2, I did not update ever, It works just as fine.

When you start it up chkdsk attempts to run and if you hit any key in the allowed time period it does not just skip chkdsk as it has in the past, it continues to reboot again and again. Even if you let the chkdsk utility run it just reboots when its finished and we're back to square one. How do we disable chkdsk or Autochk.exe if that's what is happening and will this solve the problem maybe?
