View 5 RepliesAll aplications that use the temp directory are crashing on my computer. It only happens when I am logged into my account (so if logged in as another user the system works fine). If I try to view the temp directory then explorer crashes as soon as the mouse hovers over the folder icon. I have tried disk cleanup, it crashes. Using cmd prompt "dir %temp%" it crashes too. I have run NOD32 antivirus and it finds nothing. I have tried XoftSpy and Search and Destroy but they both crash. I have tried safe mode and that is no good either! I have logged into administrator and tried to view and delete the temp folder but that also fails!.Have you heard of this before, I did read a forum (not here) where someone had the exact same problem but it went unsolved. Could it be a virus that NOD32 can't detect?

Noone could have changed anything im positive and im the only one who uses this computer ever. Would a reinstall fix the problem? and also as a side question can i reinstall windows and save all the data that on the computer does a reinstall of windows without formatting just overwrite the system or if i reinstall will i have to reinstall everything because ive been having other misc problems and id like the reinstall if i dont have to backup or copy all my info
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen in XP SP2 I go to a CMD prompt and I try to copy a file to the UNC Printer Share on the directrly attached printer on LPT1 and I get "access is denied" error message. But if I copy the file to the >LPT1 port it works fine.
The EPSON LX-300 dot matix printer is directly attached to a XP SP2 pc via a parrallel cable LPT1. It is also shared. \OST-RecpReceipt
It works fine when connected to a XP SP1 pc so I'm assuming it's a SP2 issue.
I recently (two weeks ago) upgraded my system from W98 to W2k. The first time I installed, the program , I did it keeping my w98 folders etc. Ther were some errors and I tried to re-install, choosing the overwrite option. (also downloaded service pack one! I tried to download service pack 4 but it told me there was not enough memory) I have been left with two W2k directories. I have been using the most recent one (the preferred one) and have slowly been copying my important files using my flash disk from the other W2k directory. The only problem I have had is that althought the drivers and soft ware are installed, everytime I connect and switch my digital camera on, the sytem reboots. Iwanted to "defrag " the preferred W2k directory but was told there was not enough disk space. I thought then to uninstall programs on the other W2k diectory that I was not using. ie. mainly software etc for which I have disk and have reinstalled on the preferred W2k directory. Well after I had finished I rebooted, and then the trouble began! I cannot get into the "preferred" W2k directory. I swear I did not change or remove any settings or programs.

After getting the system back I discovered that my failed Vista boot drive was still mountable as a non-boot drive. I can get to most everything on the drive except I can't get to anything under the C:Documents and Settings directory. I get access denied messages.

Even modified the directory as instructed to eliminate the search companion glich mentioned in the article. While the MS support provided the functionality I wanted, it does not help clear up all the problems it creates.
Now, when I launch Windows Explorer, in the left hand frame I have folders show, and in the right hand frame I have details shown. This is fine. When I double click a folder in the right hand frame, a new Windows Explorer launches, and the folders in the left hand frame are gone. I can click the folders icon at the top and turn them back on, but this did not use to happen. What I had and want back is for the folder to open in the same window, an leave the format of the Windows Explorer screen alone.
Used to be able to send the directory list using DOS command like DIR > LPT1: How do you now send a directory list to the printer?? The printer is on a USB port and named HP750 and the port says it is DOT... Tried using DIR > HP750 and DIR > DOT... but no luck. Anybody know how to list the directory to the printer?

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home w/SP2 on a system and everything worked well. I also installed a Seagate 500 GB HDD as a slave drive. I had no problems assigning a drive letter (D:) and mapping it as a network drive. Then yesterday, a Windows error message popped up saying there was "Delayed Write Failure" or something similar. It was at that point the the slave drive became inaccessible. I can still see the drive in My Computer but that is all. I went into disk management and click on properties, it says the file system is "RAW". I have no idea what that means.
The drive is still assigning a drive letter (d:) and it says is it is healthy (active). However, when I try exploring the drive it says "D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"." I then tried using CHKDSK to check the drive for errors in the DOS prompt. But again, nothing happened. I used Seagate Diagnostic tools to scan the drive for errors. There is nothing physically wrong with the drive as it passed all the tests except for the file structure test.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFolder on my external hard drive will not delete at all. it says " the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". i have also entered the file an tried to delete the things inside but they say " cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk". It happen wen i used the file(temp folder) for emule. it is a virus i suppose but the folders say it has no bytes to them but wen i see the size of the whole folder it's 24.5 GB of space.

I use a batch files for various maintenance stuff.Get this: When the batch file (.bat or .cmd), is in ONE PARTICULAR DIRECTORY, the defrag command in it echos endlessly, but doesn't execute. Even if the batch file contains only just the one line.If the batch file is in any other directory, it works fine. Of course, I keep all my batch files in the same directory ("C:Program FilesBruce"), and I can find nothing anywhere in Windows that should cause this directory to be any different than any other. Addition a few minutes later: Now the simple one-line batch file will sometimes work, sometimes not work, when in other directories. This is weird.

They are 0kb in size and consist of nothing if I open them in notepad. They are named along the lines of A401 or B01 and I don't know where they're coming from. I see no unknown processes in taskmanager and I have virus checked and adaware&spybot checked my system to no avail. I left my PC (which is standalone and not connected to the Internet) running overnight, doing nothing, and there were over a 1000 temp files the next day.

I'm trying to set up a backup system where I copy changed files to a zip file or directory outside of the regular backup set.In other words,And that would replace anything in D that had been changed in C. Great.But what if I want to save those changed files in C to echanged/%date%? I can't see a way to do this with Robocopy.And in case it isn't obvious, the advantage of using this method is you get redundant backups using much less space. In my experience backups are used more often to recover corrupted files than corrupted harddrives. And the problem with simply mirroring a drive is if the backup runs after the corruption, your backup is now corrupted too. And I know I could keep multiple sets of the whole backup, but that takes mucho space.
