If i buy a USB floppy drive, can my bios in my hp zv6015 boot from it in order to load external hard drive drivers so i can install win2k on that drive?
I am in desperate need of dual boot and would love to get this up and running
I bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 about a year ago. It runs Windows XP Home. I don't remember all of my specs (I'm at work), but here is my problem.
First, booting up takes a long...time. When I finally log in, I get an error message: HP AiO Device Object failed: hRes = 0x800706BAThe RPC Server is unavailable.Maximum retry attempts exceeded.I click ok and it brings up my desktop, but originally would not bring up my Start button and taskbar. After messing with it all day yesterday, I finally got a taskbar, but not my usual one. I can open some programs, but can't save any files to floppy or CD. Everything is very slow...and I do mean very! Most of the time the Task Manager will show "Not Responding", sometimes it will eventually start running again and sometimes I just have to "End Process".
I've looked around and I'm having a hard time finding good info on this. I've looked up stuff like slipstreaming SATA drivers into the windows disc, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I got the correct SATA drivers from gateways website. I'm pretty sure this system just uses the intel SATA Chipset. Any way if anyone could help me install XP on my Gateway C-141XL laptop without having a floppy disc I'd really appreciate it.

The hard drive has crashed. I have read on some websites that I can make a bootable usb drive. However, I have not been succesful in making a bootable USB thumb drive when the laptop's BIOS doesnt support a USB device to be bootable.The only thing I do have is my desktop computer (which is working fine) and a USB external case for the laptop internal hard drive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion ZV6000 laptop (AMD 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz, 80 gb Hdd, 8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drive, 128MB ATI Xpress 200m video dedicated memory). My Laptop has been having on & off problems booting to Windows, Some days it will boot to windows other days it won�t. The days it won�t I have to go thru the procedures listed below:
When I turn on my laptop it boots to the HP invent logo/intro & then that�s it, it doesn�t proceed to windows. Below in the left hand corner are a few instructions such as:ress <Esc> to change boot order
Press <F10> to enter Setup, <F12> to boot from LAN
Due (I think) to a virus my XP Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gd_080 814-1236 will not boot to Windows properly. I just get a blank screen. I can CTRL/ALT/DEL to get Task Manager and then run a task from there, including MSCONFIG or a browser but the thing will not give me any options when I boot and often will boot into Safe mode - and again I cannot do anything with it.

Problem: A few weeks ago, the laptop became noticably slower to boot. I get an hourglass that lasts for maybe a minute. I can't do anything until it goes away.
Possible cause: Spyware? Hijack This log at the bottom of this post. Spybot tells me I have two "confirmed as malware" BHO's
My laptop can't boot itself. When I try boot it, it flashes some error about ntdetect (or something) after the bios splash. And then it reboots on its own.
I've tried to boot from CD (with various software) but then I can't find the C: drive where it should boot (so I could copy the ntdetect file into its place). I could format the whole thing but I got some files that I really needed..
So is there any suggestions from anybody for this problem? Is there a way to copy the files from the hard drive or something.. I'm getting quite desperate with this thing

I didnt think anything of it at first but then it started freezing and having a hard time closing windows and it was BARLEY running. And the bar at the bottom would disappear. I had to restart the dern thing 5 times just bc even ctrl/alt/del didnt even work closing these windows. Then it happened. One day when I was trying to restart it, It was in the middle of booting, and when the 'Windows is starting' screen comes up, the blue one right before you would select a user and put in a password comes up, the laptop just CLICKS OFF then restarts the rebooting loop over and over again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI didn't open any suspicious emails, shared on P2P networks and certainly made no changes in system files. Only thing I did was what I do periodically. I defragged my hard drive, uninstalled games and went into msconfig and stopped 3 programs from start up (DEAMON tools, PowerISO and SQL service) I was also having problems with the SpyCop package so I uninstalled and reinstalled.
So I restarted (like I should) and the only process it goes through is the DELL start up "splash screen" After that it usually does the Windows XP "splash screen" but it never does the Windows XP screen, it just stays black, nothing. I pressed F2 to see if anything changed and nothing seemed to, as far as I know. I tried F8 to enter safe mode and a couple lines of text show up and stop and hang. I even tried to let it sit there to see if maybe it's just getting used to the defrag job(s) I did, still black. It's still black as I type this.
Recently my laptop is unable to boot up. The screen is blank and then frozen. I have to turn it off, unplug everything, and then wait for an hour to restart it again (and then it can boot up as normal). It all started last week after I installed Windows Media Player 10. I tried to restore the system back to a week ago, but the problem is still there.
Also, it always gives out a short "beep" sound after the laptop is ON for about 1 hour. Does it indicate that my mother board is having problem, or is it the hard disk?
I am having trouble booting my windows xp laptop. I am in the bootcfg. I cannot get any further.Any bootcfg /rebuild command it states- Failed to scan......use chkdsk to detect errors.
It then displays volume appears ok

I am trying to fix a Gateway MX3702 Notebook for a suitemate of mine. When it starts up, it loads the initial Gateway bootscreen, and then goes to a black screen for approximately 5-10 minutes. After that a loading bar appears across the bottom of the screen, and it takes about 30 more minutes to fully load. After that load XP starts up fine and there are no other discernable problems

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Laptop was working just fine last evening, and this am is now not booting successfully.Once powered off, when the on button is pressed, the following message appears."We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this. etc, etc."
When safe mode is pressed, a bunch of prompts run, and then it freezes. You must then shut off the PC and then restart to get back to the menu choices. Another message we see now is General help in the Bios.
"Set up systems behavior by modifying the bios configuration. Selecting incorrect values may cause system boot failure; load setup default values to recover
A client w/a laptop tried to boot his PC and got the error that the ntoskrnl.exe was missing. Is this a candidate for repair install or is it possible to copy the file from CD back to its original folder?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHelping a friend with his computer (Gateway w/XP Home SP2) and discovered his floppy drive does not detect the floppy disk when it is inserted. I was attempting to created Ghost images from the floppy and it would boot into the OS instead of the bootable floppy. Checked BIOS and boot sequence was correct (2nd boot device). Tried 3 different disks still no joy. Clicked on A:/ drive in Windows Explorer (with floppy disk inserted) and got "Device not accessible". Checked floppy drive properties in Device Manager and it says device is operating normally.
I have not yet opened the tower to check connections, but to date the tower has never been opened since the computer was purchased a couple of years ago. I do not know whether the floppy has ever been actually used. My friend doesn't remember ever using it.Checked the bootable floppy in my computer and it worked just fine.
I need to do a fresh install of Win XP SP3 (OEM) from a bootfloppy as I cannot access the CD. I tried the SP2 boot floppy install downloaded from MS. Didn't work. Are there any options to accomplish this? I also have another drive with Win 98 on it, but can't see the CD there as well.

For this reason I need to test with a different floppy driver.But to find it on any site of the web has been impossible for me. Does anybody knows exactly where to find it ?

I had four files on my 98 that I wanted to keep before I got rid of it, so I saved the files onto a floppy (the internet wasn't working on the 98). I have an XP that has a floppy drive, so I thought it would be fine.Some of the four files are rtf (WordPad) or doc.When I inserted the floppy, "A:" showed up, and the first two files transferred over to my desktop fine. As for the last two, when I double-click or try to open it in a window comes up, a different message pops up each time. One time it said, "The disk in drive A is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?" When I tried to open one of the rtf files in WordPad, it said that it couldn't open Word 6.0 files.

The other drive while I know it is a dvd drive and I am thinking that this will be a burner drive. When I go to my computer I can only see the d:drive a:drive and c:drive should'ent there be an e:drive here as well: When I try to burn something using nero or roxio I am asked to put a disk in the d:drive should'ent this be the e:drive as thats what I think is the burning drive
View 12 Replies View Relatedthe computer is a SolidPPC50 515 Model, which has no internal CD-ROM or Floppy drive. I have an external USB CD-ROM and Floppy, but there are only 2 USB ports, and no PS/2 keyboard slot, so I've had to use a USB keyboard. Despite the BIOS being compatible with booting through USB, it doesn't recognise the CD-ROM, but it does recognise the Floppy. I tried using a bootable floppy with the I386 folder from the install CD copied to the Hard Drive (formatted as FAT32), but when I run WINNT.exe then try to change over the Floppy drive for the CD-ROM, it can't find the CD-ROM drive.

It never used to do that. My concern is that something is set up incorrectly, in addition to it being annoying.I am contemplating formatting my HD and starting from scratch. View 1 Replies View RelatedI assumed when I bought my second Dell, I could just take my old floppy drive and slave drive from my old one & put it in the new one. However, the new computer won't recognize the floppy and the inputs on the back of the drive in the new computer are totally different than both drives in my old one. The drive I want to install is a Seagate Barracuda 120gb. It uses a 20 pin cable, but the drive (NCQ SATA)in the new computer has a much smaller cable input & I can't figure out how to install it. Any input? On a separate note, is there any way to connect two computers, such as with a serial cable, to read the drives on the second one (without using a router).
I have a question about being able to restore data using the Windows Backup program in XP WITHOUT making an ASR floppy. (I apologize for not having any more details about the system. I don't own the system and don't have access to it right now.) I chose the 3rd option, to backup "All information on this computer," and backing up to an external HD took about an hour. However, I'm not familiar with the program and didn't know that I would need a floppy disk after the backup. I didn't have access to one and therefore had to cancel that part of the backup.If the system's internal HD fails and loses all its data, will the external HD be able to restore everything even though I never created an ASR floppy? (i.e. will I be able to create a working ASR floppy somehow even if the system's own internal HD is dead?)I should note that I'm referring to personal data files (MS Office documents, pictures, etc.), NOT application files. I've tried to find the answer on this forum and other sites, but this specific question did not seem to be addressed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with windows xp on a laptop with preinstalled vista that has no floppy drive, the error "It doesn't detect the SATA HDD"; I tried the solution with a usb floppy drive and pressing f6, I found the correct driver and it works fine, I`m able to partition the HD and the process continues until it asks for the driver again but the USB floppy drive doesn't wortk in that part of the installation.
The next solution I found of this forum was making a custom XP CD including the SATA drivers with NLITE software, incredible software, without pressing f6 the HD is detected and again I'm able to partition and the installation begins, almost success!! but ... when it reboots to continue the installation it does't detect the HD again a lecture error displays and the classic press ctrl+alt+del to reboot!!! Am I missing something?
Do any one of several things. Access my external drive, the floppy does a disc check for several seconds, right click explore a partition or folder and frequently yhe same thing happens. Put in audio cd to auto run, first the floppy has to do its chugga bugga chugga sound then the cd plays. Started over a week ago, or about when I formatted a floppy to make new Partition Magic emerg. discs. I rememeber something like this on a Win98SE machine a very long time ago. Tried some searches with not much luck, tried uninstalling in safe mode and rebooting, no joy.
