When I tried to boot it up it stalls just before loading up Windows XP Media Center. I have tried to boot from an external back-up drive, a memory stick with a bootable DOS program called "Spinrite" as well as from the system recovery DVD but it stalls at the same point. View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to repair Windows, everything goes fine up till this point, where half-way through the "Installing devices" stage... nothing seems to happen, no progress. The setup doesn't hang or freeze, it seems to be working just fine except that nothing happens, it does not complete this part, just sits there. I've even left it for an hour and even then no progress.However, if I commence a new setup, a new installation, this problem does not occur and the setup completes successfully.

After several sessions with HP tech support they decided the problem was with the OS and we tried to recover XP from the boot partition or from the hard drive. That failed so HP sent me the 5 CD recovery set and I tried recovering the system. During the recovery process several different messages popped up including, missing files, files that could not be recovered and cannot open database. During another session with HP tech support we erased the hard drive and tried again. They decided the CDs that they sent were defective so they sent me another set. Again I tried to do the recovery and I once again got the same "error" messages and eventually the recovery failed after the system rebooted. After several hours it gives an error message that the recovery failed.

If just after making the switch on , I press f11 key to reach the boot menu I always find the 1.44 MB Floppy option highlighted as the booting choice.(though there had not been any floppy in the floppy drive, I dont have any really)I make the hard disk option highlighted & it solves the problem only a few times. But next time when I try F11 key to check the boot menu again I find 1.44 MB floppy highlighted.
My external hard drive has suddenly stopped working.My computer can see the drive (but not the drive label) and the shortcut I have for the drive will open it but when it does there is nothing there.I have downloaded a few so called free data recovery pieces of software and they can all see the data on my drive with no problems, even stuff I'd previously deleted seems to be available for recovery, however, as soon as you try to recover the data these "free to use" tools need to be registered and paid for.

I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.

I enter that then it simply shows the text "no bootable devices, strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" if I press F1 it simply repeats the same text Setup utility is no help.
I hit F12 once when first powering on the computer and went into the boot menu
I ran the "Pre-Boot Sytem Assesment Build 3020"
When it ran through that test everything 'passed' the tests, but in the 'DST status test' it failed and stated that no hard drive was detected.
I haven't downloaded anything maliscious, or dropped my computer. What happened to my hard drive? and is there anything I can do now to get it up and running again?

I have deleted an sound object that allows it in device manager and allowed XP to load wht it will. I still have no sound. I checked for sound services in services and they are started as well.If I load Knoppix and test, my sounds work so I am assumming it is not a hardware problem.

View 7 Replies View RelatedEver since a power failure yesterday, my computer is not booting 100% of the way - it seems to stall at the end after loading desktop etc, can't see anything missing but I am unable to do anything. Nothing opens when clicked on. It works perfectly in Safe Mode with Networking.
I checked Device Manager and found 3 things highlighted:
HID Non-user input Data Filter
HID Non-user input Data Filter in HID section, and
WAN Miniport (IP) in Network Adaptors.
I do not have a wireless network, only a hard-wired one, so not sure what that is about.
Today, when the XP boot screen appeared after post, my machine rebooted. Went to MSKB and followed instructions for Recovery Console, but when I got to the money shot, I was denied access - tried this 4 times, same response. Tried repair install, but after drivers loaded and auto re-boot, XP boot screen appeared and machine rebooted...vicious cycle.

I got up to find it had rebooted in the night and failed to boot up again. I get an error message that says boot failure system security something has failed to initialize due to hardware attatched to your computer is no longer functioning. I've loaded fail safe settings in bios nothing. I thought I'd reinstall windows but once windows starts to boot the keyboard and mouse are no longer recognized. I can't tell it to boot from CD.

I want to know if it's something I can fix on my own - I dont' know much about computers at all. To get into setup, I have to press F1 from the start up menu. If I don't do that, it takes me to a black screen where it says, Disk Boot Failure, please insert system disk and press enter. View 5 Replies View RelatedI was on the computer this morning (plugged into a power bar) when all of a sudden the power went out in my neighbourhood. I was just on the desktop at the time I believe. I unplugged everything to prevent anything from surging to be safe, and I went out for the day.When I got home, the power was back on, and so I plugged the computer back in. However, as I plugged in the computer, it turned on by itself. Normally it does not do this when I plug it in after it was forced to shut down for a blackout. I immediately knew something was up.When it started to turn on, it immediately went to a blue screen of death.
It won't get past this screen. I've tried Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Normal Mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. I also noticed it doesn't make the normal noises when it's booting up. It doesn't make that 'click click' sound when I'm booting up (I believe that's a hard drive sound?). I do have access to the Windows Recovery Console (I think - it appears as an option - I don't know if it will work) but I don't know what to do. It sounds like it did something to the hard drive... when I boot up the computer normally it asks me to press F1 (because my CMOS battery is low)... now on that screen it says Serial ATA at the top. I don't know why that is, or if this has anything to do with the low CMOS battery before, but I can't get it to turn on at all at the moment. I don't understand why the power failure would do this (or what it did)... I've never not been able to boot up after a power failure. And surely there wasn't a surge since it wasn't plugged in when the power came back on.Did it kill the HD? Anything I can do to at least recover some files?

I cloned the 40 GB original HDD, IDE, to an IDE 80 GB HDD using Acronis True Image 8.Cloning took 9 hours.Original HDD was in the Net Vista. Destination HDD attached via USB 2.I had tried using Norton Ghost 2003, but the cloning did not progress. Now, trying to boot to the cloned HDD, the system stalls, before Windows XP Splash screen, with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner.Jumper on original HDD is set to master. Jumper on Destination HDD is set to master. I booted using my Win XP Home CD, but the "R" option was not available. Windows XP Home Edition Setup "If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, setup can try to repair it". Now select the operating system you wish to repair, if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R" to continue.

The CD boots fine, but once I have done the initial setup I get a Disk Boot Error every time I restart, unless I manually intervene and again boot from the CD (in which case I can finish the installation and everything works fine, except that I can only boot from the CD).I have done some searching, but although lots of people have had similar problems, I'm not finding a solution that works for me.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWell everytime I SHUTDOWN my PC after a while, Lets say 2hours+ I get a "Disk Boot failure - Please insert system disk to continue" message, BEFORE windows loads, Before I started to panic I just restarted my PC and then it seems to boot normaly and quickly, If I leave my PC on Standby for a while, It comes back fine and ready, I play lots of games from my harddrive so I doubt its hardware failure. I have ran virus scans and spyware scans, Im clean. My boot sequence is, Floppy : CD drive : Harddrive : N/A. I dont have a CD in my drive at the time I boot.What is wrong? Why does a simple restart make it function correctly? Is it my boot sequence?
