here is another a high jack log. Im curious what you all think. my friends computer is acting strange and here is his log file. sometimes the keyboard doesnt work . then a reboot fixes that. every time he starts up the norton go back program tries to ask if it can repair the drive
View 1 RepliesFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....
Ok i have a virus on my pc that will not let me start windows. When I turn the computer on it appears to load normally, gets to the loading windows logo screen(with the black background), passes this, the screen then goes black and the computer restarts!? This goes round on a loop and doesnt stop. I know the computer has a virus, not sure what type.

Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been defraging my Hard drives on a semi regular basis. seems that after using Norton's Speed disk and after rebooting the sensor warning remains as before. After waiting hours for the process to complete, using windows defrag tells me that the drives should be defraged. Cannot bring the sensor percent number down. I recall reading some where that xp defrag and Nortons speed disk can't get along , so I would like to uninstall windows defrag and see if this helps, How do I uninstall windows defrag?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is an odd problem that just won't go away, I have a friends computer who has win XP sp-2 they had Norton 2005 on it and uninstalled it cause it is just junk anyway. But the problem is that any program that needs to be installed or updated now gives the message that you need to install the norton disk in CD drive for unknownname install.In event viewer is says "Source: MsiInstaller, Type: Warning, Category: none, Event ID: 1001, Description: Detection of product '{C6F5B6CF-609C-428E-CA83176C021B}', feature 'Complete' failed during request for component'{A07EA0AF-E117-4A34-8D54-5D826F12988C}' for more help & support" blah, blah no help at web link.Also I cannot get windows update site to even load with anything in it all no message just blank, other websites seem fine.

I had previously taken a Ghost image of drive A and wanted to restore this image to the drive. However, both the drive were connected to the system when the restore occurred and the image got restored to drive B. Hence I have lost the data I had on drive B. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. There's over 50GB free and i�ve been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i don't have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. I've noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

I vaguely recall people having nightmarish conflicts and difficulties after installing Activex, but that was a while ago. Does anybody have any feedback? I need to keep my regular chatroom (the popular Hotcomm program) functional, so if there Activex has the tendency to usurp your computer's resources or prevent competing software from running, I'll just pass on the OmNovia/Activex.

My explorer.exe does not start up when I restart the computer, then when I run it through the task manager it starts up for about three seconds then the desktop items and everything disappear again. I also never receive an error message with the explorer.exe crash. No "sorry, but the explorer.exe must close ect ect."
My PC is having serious problems every time I try to do anything with bitmapped graphics--even using emails that require downloading graphics.

I want to uninstall or disable the Microsoft movie maker, as it is interfering with my professional Adobe Premiere Pro software. I have found no say to this. Every time I plug in my i-link DVD tape drive, I get the absolutely annoying, pop window that asks which software I would like to use to capture from the DVD device. Unfortunately the software I want to use is not listed! I have selected no program and the use for every time check box.
