I want to create other accts, but I've been using my "administrator" account since I installed XP (bad idea I know). Anyway, I added the option to not allow other accounts to view my files, since I added other accounts. I need to know how to reverse this option, as I no longer have additional accounts, and no longer wish to have the security on my folders and files.

Has there been a new Windows update that locks the text and document files from people in other accounts from opening them? When I place a text or document file from my account into any other account, they cannot open them as they used to be able to. The last file that I can open between accounts was created on 11/29/2006.This is not just limited to Microsoft Word for Windows, but for files made in Excel, WordPad, and NotePad txt files as well. I think it should be easy to check, for it's probably a recent Windows Update, but the trouble is that I recently had to format my hard drive and start over, so I don't know which of the 200 or so it is that I had to download. I am hoping that all I need to do is to uninstall it.If this was an Windows Update, then I need to uninstall it because I need to be able to send people files and have them be able to read them.The exact error message for a document created in Word is: "Word cannot open the document: User does not have access privileges (C:...MyDocuments(name of file).doc)".I am running Windows XP Professional on a home made computer with 1024 MB RAM, and an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed (clean) XP Pro and set up some user accounts.I'm familiar with Win2K and thought that XP would be similar with regard to user accounts, but it appears that's not true.When I go to user accounts, I only see limited user and administrator accounts.How can I set someone to power user or in between admin and user?
i have a problem lol so i disabled all the accounts except for the administrator because i needed to log on as the admin...so on startup the admin is the only user account available. BUT...i was led to believe that the password was blank so it would log in automatically but it is password protected, but i never set a password for it so im confused as to how to enable my other user accounts. Is there a way to do it in safe mode from the cmd prompt or do i have to just reinstall another windows OS to get it back up and running.

They had no other accounts except for the default Administrator account that they had used. So the son made a new account which he also granted th permission of computer amdinistrator. since that overworte the previous Administrators account that was on there everytime they log in they get the new account and there is no way to delete the new one that has been created... Even when I tried to go into safe mode and log in as the default administrator for some reason it won't let me delete the account even though you are the Administrator and Microsoft even says."You must be an administrator to delete another administrators account" you can't even change it to a limited Account.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI set up XP Pro with myself (Tom) as the administrator with 2 limited user accounts. I boot to the welcome screen where the 3 accounts are shown. I can enter my password and use my account as the administrator.However, when I boot in safe mode there are now 2 password protected accounts. "Tom" which works with my password and "administrator" which appears locked as it will not take my password. I set my computer up myself. I have always been the password protected administrator. No one should have access to my account without my password, right? Where did this additional "administator" account come from? Without the password how can I delete it so that I am the sole administrator?

The issue is these PC's were all built prior to me setting up the network and no one installed the administrator accounts on any of them. The server box in Advanced server 2003 and I set up there accounts in active directory. Made the part of the server workgroup. Set up there share folders gave them permissions to the shares and I could not copy there files to the server. I get the message no rights or permissions contact the Administrator. I copied some test files to an
USB memory stick downloaded the to the server for testing purposes. We can see them from the desktop but we can't edit or save them. In the folder that the files were in I made sure that they were'nt read only and it still say's we don't have permissions to these files?
loss of power to the house has resulted in loosing all administrative accounts & profiles. Cant log into anything on the admin section. Only 1 acount acces and has no admin privlages. Have been told it may possibly be a damaged user profile. Need help on how to repair this so i can log on . View 5 Replies View RelatedI had recently downloaded a file that for some reason doesn't open and it creates a additional explorer.exe in the Windows Task Manager running at 60 percent. The other problem is that I cannot delete this file due to the fact it opens this additional explorer.exe in the task manager. I have tried deleting it in safe mode and scannned the file numerous times to see if it is a virus. Nothing.

The update keeps picking it up but halfway through the install a popup appears to say " an additional download is needed to complete the installation.Install service pack 3 again " . Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.

This time I decided to try and restore policies and get rid of the virus by hand... but I couldn't find a guide telling how to get these policies back! Has anyone created a guide or done this before? Had asked him if he had any idea which OS would be better for my PC.My ISP which is AT&T no longer supports my OS which is 98SE.Without upgrading to another OS I cannot get any updates for the spyware or others they offer.We only have one PC presently and think that may be all we will have.We surf the net, the kids come over and play some games but that is really it nothing too intense.
View 14 Replies View RelatedA Dell Dimensions 2400 with Pentium 4, 256MB memory and a 80GB hard drive. He is running windows xp home edition. We opened up the tower to clean out all the dust using air cans. We were very careful not to touch any wiring or connections to the CD roms or hard drive. We were ready to install 256MB chip more of memory to make it 512MB. However he purchased the wrong chip so we did not install it. I did remove the memory stick it had to show him what to purchase. I then made sure we reinstalled it back properly and tightly. We also installed tune up 2006 and Norton system works to clean out his system. I had tested the cd roms and they seemed to be working. Then my nephew tried to install his I-pod software and the program did not open itself. He then went to my computer to open the software manually and realized that the d:/drive and the e:/drives were not showing. I tried updating the drivers with no luck. My next step was to delete the cd rom's in device manager and reboot the sysytem. The system recognized the hardware and installed the drivers but the cd roms still do not appear in My Computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I also tried to do a system restore to an earlier date but windows xp could not restore to an earlier date.

I can no longer use Mozilla because all the icons are gone and there are strange, overlapping words for what used to be the menu bar. When I click on one, such as "bookmarks," I get nothing but a solid black box open on my screen. I am okay with using Internet Explorer, but I would like to be able to import my bookmarks from Mozilla.

Now, I can't find anywhere to enable/disable this in the date/time options window.
One other thing...if I go to start menu>properties>choose classic start menu, then according to the pic there should be a blue margin on the side of the start menu saying: Windows XP. Well in the second account this is the case, but in my own account this blue margin isn't present. While I'm aware these are not extreme issues....it's just I like to know what is going on with things.
when I try to end them it takes an inordinately long time. Like two or more minutes. I bring up Task Manager, highlight the "not running " program and click "end task" which brings up another box that says "end program". But when I click this box nothing happens for at least a couple of minutes, quite often longer. I can repeat this process over and over and it makes no difference.
View 14 Replies View RelatedBefore my daughter's Dell 8300 with XP Profesional HD crashed it started with up with WINDOWS XP Propfessional while it loads. I replaced the HD and reinstalled XP Pro with service pack 1 from the original CD supplied by Dell. So far so good. I went through all the updates, downloaded and installed service pack 2 for Pro. Now when XP loads it no longer displays "Professional" It displays as if its XP Home. In other words, Windows XP with out the Professional banner. When I check system info it states XP Professional is installed.

When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.

For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedAbout 5 hours ago my pc crashed, since rebooting my usb keyboard no longer works when it reaches windows login. I'm completely lost with this and it's infuriating me.
- I'm running windows xp
- Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago
- There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine
- There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports.
- The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine
- I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck
The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system.
- The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly.
- The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows
The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
I was leaving to work, so I left the computer in standby. I got home about 7 hours later and when I tried to return to desktop, the fan went on loudly but kept on going and nothing would be displayed on the screen. I just turned it off by the front panel button and went to sleep. This morning, I tried unplugging the whole machine from the electricity plug and replugging it in..well it worked! It started but the fan was constantly working for some reason.I downloaded SpeedFan and at the time the temp was like 43 (normal?). Then I turned it off to see what was wrong with the fan. I opened the box and did a small vacuum just trying to collect the dust.after that NO LUCK.The computer doesn't even come on anymore. I have important files on it.I'm going to be screwed.
