To Access The Hidden Drive
Nov 16, 2007
Someone hacked into my pc. What i try to access is my computer hidden internet security zone. This person created this zone accustomed to his needs and how i access this drive as is gone now and i read that key registry from 21-47 would make the drive visible but not able to locate that drive. Also there are signs of compression, encryption and password protecting of my files and folders and can i reverse the same.

I am using Windows XP, Sv. Pk.2. on a 3 year old Dell desktop. I recently had to do a complete uninstall and reinstall. I backed up everything on an Iomega external hard drive using Acronis True Image software. Everything worked fine and I have all my files back, except for my email address books (7 Of them) and my saved email folders (about 20 of them). I use Thunderbird for my email. The email data are all in my hard drive but are in hidden files. I can locate them but cannot figure out how to open them and read them - and neither can I import them. Here is an example for just one file: abook.mab C:Documents and SettingsWilliamApplication DataThunderbirdProfiles|zvcjz11s.default
All files are "Read" files and this is the message I get when I click on "Read" : Adobe Reader could not open 'abook.mab'

On a newish Asus laptop (Series A9Rp) and before using an included Conversion .bat file... I successfully restored this machine to it its original state, adding drivers etc from a third CD-ROM. I also, for the purposes of learning, restored it to a full installation using the hidden partition which appears to be located on C: drive After doing this I converted to NTFS.

No matter what I do, when I change the properties of a single directory to either show or not show hidden files and folders, that property then changes in every single directory on the whole drive. I do not click on "Apply to All Folders", I just go to the directory of interest and change the button in Folder Options>View and press "OK". Is there a trick here? Basically I want some folders to show hidden folders, and others to not show them. Right now it's either all or nothing! Again, I am NOT pressing apply to all, which I know will apply all view settings to every folder.

1. remove run in start menu
2. remove search in start menu
3. prohibit command prompt to be use
4. Prevent access to drive access from my computer (drive c: only)
5. Hide specific drive in my computer (drive c: only)
i closed gpedit.msc now i cant re-run gpedit.msc to configure my settings again because i cannot access drive c: where gpedit resides (c:windowssystem32gpedit.msc) i dont want to re-install the whole thing or to start all over again. winxp expert

A little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive. When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

I have WXP Home, a 160gb HD. Asus Motherboard. I partitioned the C drive with Paragon 9 and moved all my data to the D drive due to some problems and had to format and reinstall windows on the C drive. when I finished and rebooted I could access everything. A short time later I could not access the D Drive, the error message said that I did not have permission. No explanation, Just locked out. I can access folders on the D drive if I search for a folder then copy them across from the search window into the C Drive, or if I boot into Safe Mode. That is no good. I need access from My Computer by clicking on the D Drive Icon. Any suggestions.

Running Win XP Pro SP2.I recently upgraded to the latest version of iTunes for Windows (v 4.9) and iTunes seems to have hijacked one of my CD drives (its actually a DVD-R drive). If I put an audio CD in it, iTunes sees and can play the disk. But I can't access either data or audio disks with non-iTunes apps, e.g., Windows Explorer. If I try to access the drive from Explorer, I get the message "D: is not accessible. Incorrect function." I get the same "incorrect funtion" error if I try to access D: from a Command Prompt. As I recall, when I was doing the iTunes update, there was a message to install it a second time because it needed to "update" registry entries relating to the CD drives. Apparently, iTunes changed some registry entry so that my D: drive is no longer accessible to anything else.

Last week, my primary hard drive crashed. Unfortunately, it has very important data and was not backed up. My computer runs Win XP Pro has two NTFS hard drives. "C" drive, which is the boot drive, and a "D" drive. When the crash occured (and I have no idea what caused it, I came home and found the computer with a "Load Error"; System haulted message), the computer would no longer boot the OS. As mentioned above, it would run through POST and get to the point where the OS loads and stop. The message "Load Error!" would appear and then say to hit any key to continue. When you hit a key, it would then give "System Haulted!" and freeze up.When I put in Norton Recovery disk in and boot up from that, I can "see" the drive contents including all the directories and files. But Norton will not allow me to copy those files anywhere. When I use Microsoft Remote Console, I can see the root directory of the drive but when I try to access a subdirectory, I am told "Access Denied". (Yes, I have Admin rights)
So today, I bought a brand new Hard drive and installed it for Drive "C". Drive "D" was removed altogether and the old Drive "C", (the one that no longer loads the OS) was moved to drive "D". Then I reinstalled Windows XP Pro. I was hoping that I could "see" the drive from within Windows XP Pro and copy the data from the old drive to the new drive. But that is not the case. When I look at the "Disk Management" console in Windows XP Pro, I can clearly see the both drives listed. It shows Drive "C" as "Healthy (System)" and it shows the other drive without a drive letter assigned to it. It shows it as "Healthy (Active)". However, it will NOT allow me to assign it a drive letter. Nor will it allow me to Mark the new Drive C as "Active". As for the other old drive which does not have any drive letter assigned, the only option it gives me is to delete the drive partition, which I cannot do otherwise I lose all my data. So how can I access this drive? Why will it not let me assign a drive letter? I am in a state of panic and I cannot get any help from Microsoft.

Reinstalled xp on a computer for a friend. He had all his pics and music on second hard drive. It is a 120 gig IDE seagate.Main drive 250 gig WD sata drive.I unhooked second drive ,formatted and reinstalled xp on main hard drive.hooked up second drive and it is seen in bios and in disk management as a healthy drive but has no drive letter nor can I access it.Motherboard is a asus A8n sli deluxe.Second drive hooked up as master on second ide slot. When i try to assign it a drive letter in disk management that option is grayed out. When i tried to boot from second hard drive it contains no operating system but i saw norton go-back come up for a moment. After researching on net i think that is the problem.Hooked drive up to my computer and same thing.I know he had norton on main drive but dont know why he had it on secondary hard drive.

Recently the computer has been trying to access my floppy drive both on boot up and when I shut down. There is no disk in the drive. The computer also gives no errors. It never used to do that. My concern is that something is set up incorrectly, in addition to it being annoying.I am contemplating formatting my HD and starting from scratch. But before I do any ideas what could be causing this?
