Running Win XP Pro SP2.I recently upgraded to the latest version of iTunes for Windows (v 4.9) and iTunes seems to have hijacked one of my CD drives (its actually a DVD-R drive). If I put an audio CD in it, iTunes sees and can play the disk. But I can't access either data or audio disks with non-iTunes apps, e.g., Windows Explorer. If I try to access the drive from Explorer, I get the message "D: is not accessible. Incorrect function." I get the same "incorrect funtion" error if I try to access D: from a Command Prompt. As I recall, when I was doing the iTunes update, there was a message to install it a second time because it needed to "update" registry entries relating to the CD drives. Apparently, iTunes changed some registry entry so that my D: drive is no longer accessible to anything else.
i just installed a fresh winxp pro, i did not set any password so the windows starts up without asking password, so i believed i have the administrative rights i have 2 local drives (c:) and (d:) i run gpedit.msc and configure the following:
1. remove run in start menu 2. remove search in start menu 3. prohibit command prompt to be use 4. Prevent access to drive access from my computer (drive c: only) 5. Hide specific drive in my computer (drive c: only)
i closed gpedit.msc now i cant re-run gpedit.msc to configure my settings again because i cannot access drive c: where gpedit resides (c:windowssystem32gpedit.msc) i dont want to re-install the whole thing or to start all over again. winxp expert
A little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive. When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?
At times Cd drive Icon not visible in My computer. Then I have to restart the system to get it back. I m using Windows 2003 EE SP1 in newly assembled server. WHile browsing the contents of the CD and if I choose back option it says D: or CD drive is not accessible and I have to restart the system to get it back. -This is a fresh installation. Please let me know what could be wrong.
I have WXP Home, a 160gb HD. Asus Motherboard. I partitioned the C drive with Paragon 9 and moved all my data to the D drive due to some problems and had to format and reinstall windows on the C drive. when I finished and rebooted I could access everything. A short time later I could not access the D Drive, the error message said that I did not have permission. No explanation, Just locked out. I can access folders on the D drive if I search for a folder then copy them across from the search window into the C Drive, or if I boot into Safe Mode. That is no good. I need access from My Computer by clicking on the D Drive Icon. Any suggestions.
When I go to my computer and try to double click on the C drive to open it I get the following error. C: esycledoot.com is not a valid win32 application.
Can anyone tell me the way how to connect PC-A using OS (WIN NT) to connect to PC-B OS (WIN XP) I do what i know like PC-B sharing the folder or drive , then try to connect it can't seem to connect any drive at all.
I am trying to save an Excel spreadsheet to my D: drive but my computer sends a pop up message saying that I do not have access and to contact the administrator. I am the administrator? I know that I can save stuff on this drive because I am able to burn disc and things like that on this drive.
I am trying to install Windows XP on a X25-V SSD. After booting from an XP CD, the system indicates that it cannot access the drive selected for installation.
Years ago I devided my harddisk in 3 partitions. C/D/E. All these partitions worked for more than 2 years perfect. After reinstalling today windows XP (not using this partition in this process), in can't access drive E anymore. And i did not touch this partition.I see all the maps. But when i want to open the map I get the ACCESS DENIED message. I have full administrator rights on this drive letter.
Last week, my primary hard drive crashed. Unfortunately, it has very important data and was not backed up. My computer runs Win XP Pro has two NTFS hard drives. "C" drive, which is the boot drive, and a "D" drive. When the crash occured (and I have no idea what caused it, I came home and found the computer with a "Load Error"; System haulted message), the computer would no longer boot the OS. As mentioned above, it would run through POST and get to the point where the OS loads and stop. The message "Load Error!" would appear and then say to hit any key to continue. When you hit a key, it would then give "System Haulted!" and freeze up.When I put in Norton Recovery disk in and boot up from that, I can "see" the drive contents including all the directories and files. But Norton will not allow me to copy those files anywhere. When I use Microsoft Remote Console, I can see the root directory of the drive but when I try to access a subdirectory, I am told "Access Denied". (Yes, I have Admin rights)
So today, I bought a brand new Hard drive and installed it for Drive "C". Drive "D" was removed altogether and the old Drive "C", (the one that no longer loads the OS) was moved to drive "D". Then I reinstalled Windows XP Pro. I was hoping that I could "see" the drive from within Windows XP Pro and copy the data from the old drive to the new drive. But that is not the case. When I look at the "Disk Management" console in Windows XP Pro, I can clearly see the both drives listed. It shows Drive "C" as "Healthy (System)" and it shows the other drive without a drive letter assigned to it. It shows it as "Healthy (Active)". However, it will NOT allow me to assign it a drive letter. Nor will it allow me to Mark the new Drive C as "Active". As for the other old drive which does not have any drive letter assigned, the only option it gives me is to delete the drive partition, which I cannot do otherwise I lose all my data. So how can I access this drive? Why will it not let me assign a drive letter? I am in a state of panic and I cannot get any help from Microsoft.
I just restarted my pc and i found that i cant access drive c: and d: I downloaded a Anti-Malware program and i did a scan with it.. And restarted again i found that it sloved my problem and i can access drive c: but now there's another problem with D: when i double click it says : resycled tldr.com is not a valid Win32 application. I tried to right-click -> open, but it shows me : D: is not a valid Win32 application.
Reinstalled xp on a computer for a friend. He had all his pics and music on second hard drive. It is a 120 gig IDE seagate.Main drive 250 gig WD sata drive.I unhooked second drive ,formatted and reinstalled xp on main hard drive.hooked up second drive and it is seen in bios and in disk management as a healthy drive but has no drive letter nor can I access it.Motherboard is a asus A8n sli deluxe.Second drive hooked up as master on second ide slot. When i try to assign it a drive letter in disk management that option is grayed out. When i tried to boot from second hard drive it contains no operating system but i saw norton go-back come up for a moment. After researching on net i think that is the problem.Hooked drive up to my computer and same thing.I know he had norton on main drive but dont know why he had it on secondary hard drive.
Hi on my Win XP home system one of my hard drives has dissapeared from my computer' it is still listed in device manager. It is a device of 200 GB on a promise ide card - it apears as a sussi device I have another 200 Gb drive also on this card and that is still working at present.I have tryed to run Chkdsk on it but get "Cannot open volume for direct access."It was working okay this morning untill I ran O&o defrag on it, the PC just rebooted and the drive dissapeared.
I've had a new hard drive installed which is working without any problems. My old hard drive has been fitted into my new(er) computer but I can't access the files that I left on it except for the Windows system and program files. It has come up as Drive F and I've tried everything I know which isn't much, Recover my old documents.
When i restarted my Compaq PC (i know thats a problem right there ) I get an error saying unable to access the hard drive. I tried repairing with the windows XP Cd and it can't find the main partition. I cant install a fresh copy of XP/reformat it either. Is my HD dead? I checked the connections, seem okay.If i buy a drive and put in a firewire case, i can set that up as mymain drive and run XP off that right? (since my machine is severalyears old, notworth upgrading.
Recently the computer has been trying to access my floppy drive both on boot up and when I shut down. There is no disk in the drive. The computer also gives no errors. It never used to do that. My concern is that something is set up incorrectly, in addition to it being annoying.I am contemplating formatting my HD and starting from scratch. But before I do any ideas what could be causing this?
Ive two os on my system and my disk has three partitions named c: d: and e:, my 2nd os is installed on e:. when I use the 2nd os how can I hide drive c: and d: when I click my computer. This is to prevent data loss coz im the only one in the family using the other os on drive c, but even though when they use e: they can still access the contents of c: and d:. how to prevent this?
I have 3 accounts on my computer..1 administrator & 2 limited accounts recently the limited accounts cannot access any drives except C:.I tried giving these accounts administrator rights, but still they are unable to access those drives..my account can access all drives, but i dont know why the limited accounts are unable to do so.

Hey there people, I just bought an external hard drive and i have some of my sensitive information stored on it. The hard drive is mine and all, but im PRETTY sure that i am not the main user on the computer and i want to deny access to the drive on other accounts. Is this possible?
I am unable to access my cd rom drive. After inserting a data cd and clicking on the cd rom icon, a blank screen appears.I would be most grateful for any help you might be able to provide me.
I've used USB drives on this computer at my Dad's before but for some reason I am getting an error message which reads; 'This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. There is only one user profile on the computerand it has administrator privileged.
I cannot access files on the CD-ROM drive of my laptop. it's a combined cd/dvd, and it reads dvd's fine, runs programs from cd's, but when i go to windows explorer and try to open individual files, like word documents, powerpoint presentations, etc, it does not work. if i double click on the drive, nothing happens. if i right click on it and click open, nothing happens. i know it's not an issue with the CD, because I put the same CD into my other computer, and it reads it fine. And get this, the icing on the cake: I have a network set up, and when i make my cd rom drive sharable, my other computer can access the files on it. So my desktop can read the files fine from the shared cd rom drive in my laptop. but my laptop can't read it's own cd rom drive.HP support are dumbfounded, they say they have never heard of such a thing, and recommend that i reinstall windows xp.
Someone hacked into my pc. What i try to access is my computer hidden internet security zone. This person created this zone accustomed to his needs and how i access this drive as is gone now and i read that key registry from 21-47 would make the drive visible but not able to locate that drive. Also there are signs of compression, encryption and password protecting of my files and folders and can i reverse the same.
I want to know if I can make a specific hard drive on my PC available through the net so my daughter in college can have access to that particular hard drive.
I am having a problem with windows explorer hanging when I try to access files located on a Simpletech USB Hard Drive. The explorer window will popup, but nothing appears.I have relocated the drive to another computer in the office and it works fine there. It has produced a few error messages.
I was attempting to set permissions on my two NTFS formatted external harddrives and essentially deny users and guests the right to create/delete any files on the drive but I guess it somehow managed to restrict that right for EVERYONE. Not even in safe mode as the Adminstrator can I even look at the permissions and apparently it will not even allow me to open any files either. I cannot copy files to another drive and I cannot open or run any executables. Is there any way at all for me to reset the permissions for this particular drive or perhaps alter them to work the way that they rest of them work for me. I can't for the life of me understand how the Administrator cannot access the files on a folder and I don't exactly know what higher privileged user type exists. I really don't want to have to reformat the drive because it's got about 350 gigs of videos/music/programs.
I am trying to remotely access drives from my one computer to my laptop in order to transfer files with more ease than running back and forth, burning, copying, etc. The method I am using is simple enough. The drives are set for administrative share [c$, d$, etc]. And I am accessing through the run command via \REMOTE_IPc$. I am definately pinging the computer correctly because a dialog box opens, however this is where the problem begins. The dialog box does not let me switch to an administrative account. It only shows "Guest" in the login name.
I dont have the guest account even activated on my main Desktop CPU and I wont have much access without administative rights. I was just wondering what could be making it so that I cant login under my main administative name. My desktop is using WinXP pro. Laptop is using XP home. Not sure if this fact matters but the desktop is using internet connection sharing that is feeding a router, which in turn is giving wireless internet to my home network wherein my laptop is connected. Also, I can access remote desktop easily enough but even with disk drives shared they do not show up on the remote computers "My Computer" folder.
I made a mistake when installing fresh copy of win HP. I had a new HD and i've installed windows on it. But the old HD that was on my PC was found during the installation and the system found it like partition C:. I've made a mistake and made that partition unpartitioned space and than again i have made it partition. The disk is not yet formated but off course, i cant access the data that is on the disk.how can I save the data that is on my disk.
