Sep 28, 2013I have setup a n54l hp micro server with windows 8 as my home server and shared a folder with password protection set to off (needed to enable guest account for this to work btw which seemed strange)
Now file transfer between my windows pcs is fast (30MB/s over wifi) but to my android phone and tablet the speed is horribly slow (30kb/s i.e. 1000x slower)
Before I used a readynas duo as my file server and my transfer speeds with my phone were about 0.5MB/s and on pc about 5/MB/s
I have tried different applications on my phone with no change in speed (currently using es file explorer)

Jun 1, 2014I started to transfer a file in Windows 8.1 pro but it will only use up to 22% watching the disk in task manager. I tested it in crystal mark and HD tune and they both give the hard drive 150 MB's Read /write. This is EXTREMEMLY annoying for network transfers as well since I can get 250 MB's R / W out of a server from NIC teaming. How can I set it to use 100% for file transfer? That worked perfectly. When windows start and autolog in it run this command and connected me to my home VPN.
Now in win 8 that dont work
What to do ? I could not find anything good on internet yet.

May 21, 2013So I have the piece of crap PC known as the Archos 9. Never use it anymore because I got a real laptop.
I just bought a WD My passport 1tb hard drive. So I want to use it as an external network drive.
I would leave my Archos 9 in a corner somewhere with the HD connected,with file sharing. It is touchscreen and has only a built in mouse. No keyboard.
How would I be able to set it up? It overheat sometimes and lags like hell. Has no Fan which might make it suitable for being in a dark corner
Any OS's that don't strain the system a lot and are not outdated? I heard of some other OS's that do this really well,with not much power usage.

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (Windows 8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".
View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on Windows 8 Computer
View from Windows 8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but Windows 8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't work at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of support ever.
I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.
Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.
I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.
(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)
Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this Windows 8 Machine (Windows 8 x-64 Enterprise version).
Can't Transfer Data In File Explorer
Mar 15, 2014On my new Asus PC I am trying to transfer Docs, Contacts, Pictures, & Music from a flash drive to the Library in File Explorer. I 'Copy' e.g. Documents from the flash drive, & when I right click in the Library on Documents, the box that opens does not show a 'Paste'. I tried to drag the items across but that won't work either. I do not have the same problem on my other notebook.

Mar 29, 2014I found a lot of 100% disk usage problems and their solutions, but none of them could fix mine.
So here is my issue : every time I copy files from one disk to another or even within the same disk among partitions and install a program/game, my computer becomes extremely slow. A single click is responded after 3-4 seconds. When I open control panel, it shows 100% disk usage. As soon as the file transfer gets over, everything becomes normal.
My problem is not my transfer speed. It is that while a transfer is happening, nothing else works. Even though the transfer rate is 6 -7 mbps

Dec 18, 2013In window 7 it uses maximum 2gb of ram when transfering big file, say an example a movie size of 8gb. now in windows 8 it seems it uses 6-8GB its as if file is transfered into ram first and then slowly copy into targeted disk. just what is going on here and why microsoft decided to do this? if power goes out then all the files is gone and the entire process is actually slower imho.
Is there anyway to disable this? or revert it back to similar what 7 had?
Hardware Drivers :: External HDD Disconnects Then Reconnects During File Transfer
Aug 23, 2014About a few days ago I tried copying some stuff from my old laptop to my new one with my Toshiba HDD (750GB). Some are large sizes.
At least 2 files were corrupted and from then on out, I've been having issues with the external. The folder it was in could not be deleted. I tried EVERY possible way to delete it (it SEEMED to delete all the files when i did but it says there are still files in it). I ran all kinds of checks and defrag fixes and I assumed everything was fine (files showed up...) But now I can transfer files FROM it but not TO it. Once in a while I'd be able to get some stuff onto it but then it disconnects and says that the file I'm trying to copy from my laptop (both laptops now) is not in its location. Then the external HDD disconnects then reconnects. And I am having that folder deletion problem again.
EDIT: now I'm having issues transferring FROM the external.

SO I power cycle.
The poe device and usually it comes back up but it didn't and the computer said the dns server isn't responding..... So I did the ip configuration thing and cleared / renew. Then tried power cycling the router still nothing it should be working...

Can't Connect To Remote SQL Server From Windows 8 PC
Jan 28, 2014I have a new Windows 8 pc and I need to connect to our website's remote SQL Server database. Everything works fine on our older Windows 7 pc's, but on Windows 8 I get a "The server was not found or was not accessible..." error.
Our hosting company has us use a VPN in order to connect to SQL Server and the VPN shows that it is connecting fine so that should not be causing this problem. We have a MS Access front end application that we use to view and edit data and I have tried using that to connect and I have also tried using SQL Server Management Studio 2012 and they both return the same above error. Both of these options work fine on my Windows 7 laptop.
We have Norton Internet Security installed on all of our pc's here and I also tried disabling that, but I still got the same above error so I don't think Norton is causing this problem either. I believe this must be something related to Windows 8.
I've been researching this online and I tried to ping our server and it worked from a Windows 7 pc right next to me and timed out on my Windows 8 pc. Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise so I don't really know what that means.

Nov 9, 2013I keep getting this error in the Event Viewer on my Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14 everytime I start.... I found them both in the regedit but when I right click on properties to grant the permissions to Full or All i get another windows error msg saying the permissions cannot be changed. So Im stuck with keep getting the error.

May 20, 2014I have a simple samba 2.3.3 file server named server3 with three shares (commons, financial, and software) connected to 5 XP workstations all belonging to the workgroup called LINUX. All of the XP machines have normal access to server3 and shared folders on each other.
We've recently add two Windows 8.1 workstations which could not see anything on the network until I add the LSA dword value for LmCompatibilityLevel. Though I can see the server and map the drives now; I still cannot view the files on any of the server3 shares from either of the 8.1 machines. I can however view shared files on all of the other XP machines from the 8.1's and all of the XPs can see them as well.
I can watch the 8.1 machines log on to the samba server and see that the user is given root privileges so I'm thinking that it is Windows that is keeping the files from being displayed.

Jun 13, 2014I can ping our work server (windows 8 server) as well as connect to it using a remote desktop connection, it just won't map as a network drive.
I had this problem a few days ago, so I tried everything I could think of (dns flush, ip config release/renew, restarting, disconnecting from network drive & re-mapping) and nothing would let me back on. I did a system restore to 2 weeks ago and it works again. So of course then windows wants to do its updates, I let the updates happen and the problem returns.
It seems like the windows updates are the root of the problem. For now I'll have to restore to before the updates & turn off the updates.

Sep 30, 2013Recently, Microsoft included the Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM on their Dreamspark basic site. Currently, I'm running the R1 version on a virtual machine using VMware Player. How can I upgrade the R1 to R2 while keeping all of my files and settings using VMware?
Do I just boot from the ISO (I haven't downloaded it yet) (CD/DVD settings inside R1 VM) and then it will detect and upgrade R1 or I have no choice but to create another VM and then manually replicate my files and settings from R1 VM? I really don't want to do the latter since it's very time consuming.

Jan 14, 2014My hard drive crashed on my Windows 7 (work) laptop, so I've loaded Windows 8 on a new hard drive in the machine.
Everything is working as expected for a new OS (I'm still getting used to it), except that I can't connect to EVE online.
I've checked firewall settings. I've added ports 26000 and 3724 rules to the Windows firewall, but still cannot connect.
I can ping 87.237.38.200, but I cannot telnet to 87.237.38.200 26000 or 3724. I'm an IT consultant, so I have access to the firewall at my office, but I don't see any rules prohibiting those ports. I have also tried adding a rule to allow them, but no dice, and the game worked 2 days ago when my system had Windows 7 on it.
A tracert to 87.237.38.200 works fine and nothing is over 250ms which according to the documentation [URL] ...... I've read is the threshold.
The game is up to date, I've tried clearing the game's cache.
So unless I'm missing something, I'm left to believe there is some weird setting in Windows 8 that is stopping me from connecting/telneting to the server.
