I have just installed Windows 8/8.1 - I just installed SQL Server 2012 and rebooted.
I can't find where SQL Server management studio is located. I've looked on the start screen and I've looked on the Desktop. I can't find an Icon to run it anywhere.
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, Microsoft included the Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM on their Dreamspark basic site. Currently, I'm running the R1 version on a virtual machine using VMware Player. How can I upgrade the R1 to R2 while keeping all of my files and settings using VMware?
Do I just boot from the ISO (I haven't downloaded it yet) (CD/DVD settings inside R1 VM) and then it will detect and upgrade R1 or I have no choice but to create another VM and then manually replicate my files and settings from R1 VM? I really don't want to do the latter since it's very time consuming.
Got a custom build server - Gigabyte H87M-D3H, i5-4570, 16GB RAM. It's now running 2012 R2, but it was running 2012 initially and had exactly the same problems, which suggests hardware issues.
Nearly every night, during the night sometime, the server crashes off, and needs to be started again with the power button.
I first suspected a power issue because nothing shows in the event log.But after connecting it to a UPS and replacing the power supply (with a Corsair CX430), the issues continue.
I also get the odd BSOD - dump attached.
I've checked the following:
- Checked, rechecked and replaced all sata cables
- Scanned/chkdsk all HDDs
- Memtest for a few hours
- sfc /scannow
- UPS and new PSU as mentioned above
What else can I try?
I am building a programming project and would require a Virtualization software to try it. So, I thought to get the Standalone Hyper-V Server 2012. So, how to get them? I have heard that they are a standalone Operating System then installs on the Hard Drive and run like an OS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAs I am nearing the limits of my C drive, I have been purging applications and moving them to a secondary D drive. One of the uninstalled apps, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Pro, opened up space on my drive, but also left about 29 uninstalled programs (and I assume, many unnecessary folders). According to a couple of Google searches, uninstalling these programs, even if done in the correct order, could cause some problems down the line. However, I do want to install this program on my D drive. Would installing visual studio on my d drive cause any problems (as there are 29 programs related to visual studio on the C drive)? I am running windows 8.1 on a Gigabyte p34g.

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (Windows 8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".
View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on Windows 8 Computer
View from Windows 8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but Windows 8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't work at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of support ever.
I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.
Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.
I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.
(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)
Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this Windows 8 Machine (Windows 8 x-64 Enterprise version).
This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
In All Apps, Files&Folders and Network Speed Test icons show blank whereas its tiles work properly
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I DLed GIMP I noticed that several other apps had installed themselves. Just your run-of-the-mill adware opening random popups asking to scan my system for this and that and trying to sell junk. I used Malwarebytes and AdAware. Don't get me started on AdAware, as I think they've been overrun by monkeys. Anywho, AdAware doesn't find anything anymore, whereas Malwarebytes found 40 something issues. It now says my system is clean.
Now the strange thing is, my problem didn't occur until after I deleted the extra programs from my system. I have yet to locate GIMP at all on my system. Firefox and Chrome were both rendered useless, as they were "unable to connect to the proxy server." The store page in Steam gives me nothing but a "-130 error."
The plot thickens... My computer IS connected to the internet, as I am able to play games online through Steam, and I was able to disable the proxy server setting in Firefox. However, when I attempt to disable my system's proxy server settings, it reverts back the second I hit Okay.
I have changed the registry setting from 03(proxy) to 09(auto-detect)....No dice. That change sticks, but appears to change nothing. I have also disabled other proxy settings in the registry that had been activated, changing 1s to 0s. Those changes stick, too, but still nothing.
The only constant is the phrase "some settings are controlled by your systems administrator" plastered in Internet Options. I am logged in as administrator and have even tried merging Brink's .reg file to remove windows update policies.
My windows apps dont want to open, the store opens shows the brief case logo for a 2-3 seconds and it minimises when i click on it on it to open it again the same thing happens and all other apps dont even respond just their icon move a little on the sides to indicate they are clicked but they don't open at all.
I use windows 8 enterprise and it is activated, it happened before, one way to fix it but its annoying is to create new account and on it they work just fine, but the old one don't.
I can delete and it and recreate it but then i have to register some of my programs again. I read on the internet about that issue so my resolution is not the problem UAC is still on. I use windows defender for antivirus.
I am running Windows 8.1 I am not sure why this is happening but on my Tile screens the icons all disappeared, and now rectangles.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was happily using Windows Movie Maker 2012 on Windows 8 for several days, when all of a sudden the sound stopped working. Whenever I try to play a clip from a video camera, a former project, or a finished movie file on my computer, the video plays but with absolutely no sound. I have tried putting in mp3 songs, and those do not play with sound either. I can see and single out the audio tracks to clips, but I cannot hear anything. Sound on the computer is working fine, and the clips play in Windows Media Player and other media players. I have tried uninstalling Windows Movie Maker and reinstalling it. It worked initially, but I waited a few days and tried again only to have the same problem occur.
(P.S., I did try Windows Movie Maker 6, but it does not accept certain movie file formats that my video camera uses, so I went back to WMM 2012.)
I have been running XP and then Windows 7 on my iMac for some years but had to reboot when moving between windows and Mac.
Now that I have the latest iMac I have installed XP, using Parallels and it works fine, with both systems running simultaneously on adjacent monitors. Brilliant!
However, a Windows 8 upgrade, bought from Amazon, is proving difficult to activate. I thought that this may be because the XP is Sevice Pack 2 instead of SP3. Having difficulty getting SP3, I followed a video on Youtube which took me, via Regedit, to "CSD version" and changing 200 t0 300.
XP now appears to be SP3 but is it really? I haven't downloaded anything, just changed a number.
I uninstalled google talk from control panel (uninstall a program) however I can still see Google Talk application group (with all icons) in the All apps screen. I also checked C:UsersuserAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu Programs but couldn't find leftovers there.
How to manually remove gtalk icons from Apps desktop.
Can I delete these old folders from 2012 i posted a picture there are others with random numbers and letters as well that are not folders, they appear to have a windows KB file in theme are they safe to delete? Here is the picture...

View 3 Replies View RelatedWithin the last month or so, shortcuts on the start menu haven't been refreshing when their respective icons actually change. This only pertains to 3rd party programs and games--not those downloaded from the Microsoft store or included in Windows by default. For example, Steam recently changed the design of their logo. This change was never reflected in the start menu.
There are at least several other apps, like the PortableApps launcher, that the same is happening to. I've actually had to go to the entry in appdata and completely remove them and re-add them to get the changes to show. Never had an issue with anything like this until relatively recently, though I can't place one particular event as being definitive. It may have been like this for even longer and I wouldn't have known until a few things updated anyway.
See system spec for details, as everything is up-to-date. It would be nice for software to update icons and have those changes reflected rather than having to add manually.
This problem happens to me right after the installation of Stardock's Start8 or another app called StartIsBack. It could be those 2 apps or it could be something else I don't know.
The problem is, after a reboot, all of a sudden, the icons lose their image and they just become blank white files, if I right click on a file for example to Run As Administrator or anything else, the whole context menu doesn't appear and Explorer just freezes until I force restart
This happened to me in 8 diff. formats / fresh install I finally gave up and just reverted back to Windows 7. Could it be those start menu replacement apps or perhaps some dodgy windows updates?

View 1 Replies View RelatedOk so here is some info I have Internet from storm Internet it's a radio dish Ethernet go's to the power over Ethernet device then into my extreme gigabit router , see storm had to come out and move the dish for 20 percent better signal and it was working fine for a day I was getting 6mbps easy, then was on Xbox when out of nowhere it gos out... SO I power cycle.
The poe device and usually it comes back up but it didn't and the computer said the dns server isn't responding..... So I did the ip configuration thing and cleared / renew. Then tried power cycling the router still nothing it should be working...
Microsoft uses a display server? I assume it does but I am doing a presentation on display servers and I found a ton of information on Linux and OS X display servers but I cannot find anything on the display server Windows uses.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new Windows 8 pc and I need to connect to our website's remote SQL Server database. Everything works fine on our older Windows 7 pc's, but on Windows 8 I get a "The server was not found or was not accessible..." error.
Our hosting company has us use a VPN in order to connect to SQL Server and the VPN shows that it is connecting fine so that should not be causing this problem. We have a MS Access front end application that we use to view and edit data and I have tried using that to connect and I have also tried using SQL Server Management Studio 2012 and they both return the same above error. Both of these options work fine on my Windows 7 laptop.
We have Norton Internet Security installed on all of our pc's here and I also tried disabling that, but I still got the same above error so I don't think Norton is causing this problem either. I believe this must be something related to Windows 8.
I've been researching this online and I tried to ping our server and it worked from a Windows 7 pc right next to me and timed out on my Windows 8 pc. Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise so I don't really know what that means.
I keep getting this error in the Event Viewer on my Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14 everytime I start.... I found them both in the regedit but when I right click on properties to grant the permissions to Full or All i get another windows error msg saying the permissions cannot be changed. So Im stuck with keep getting the error.

Is there a program that such causes can block the installation of programs, or hide the drives on your computer? It can be installed on a server or locally - with indifference.

Another matter. How a computer (model) duplicate to the other 20? For a backup? By the server? I mean, I do not have to install the 19 remaining, but install programs, just as soon as cloned together with all the settings.
