View 9 RepliesI use a wireless network which utilizes MAC address filtering for security purposes and WEP encryption. I have a MAC address which is white listed on the network and am successfully able to access it by spoofing in my windows XP PC.
However, windows 8 has been giving me headaches since the last week because it simply refuses to alter the mac address to anything with the first octet being '00'.
I am using Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 and TP Link WN7200ND devices. looking for a way in order to alter the MAC in my windows 8 or some way to scan the network with my windows XP PC and find out some other white listed MAC addresses from the router by LINUX or whatever means possible
Can I use airodump -ng on windows somehow (I don't know linux much) to sniff the whitelisted macs?
I want to make my laptop (hp pavilion g6 Windows 8 64-bit) exactly like my pc. I mean to have every option the same and everything in the registry to be the same. Is there a way i can do this automatically?

how do you make changes to the registry in Windows 8? Not being able to definitely makes it more secure but also impossible to customize.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo when I was using Windows Vista I used Acronis True Image, when windows 7 came along I use macrium reflect, now I am using windows 8.
don't know what to try or use this time. I have three hard drives one for my OS, one for media+installation of programs and lastly one for backups. I want to make a system image in case something goes wrong save me the hassle of reinstalling and downloading again?
My system was dual booting Windows 8 and Windows 7. I have deleted the Windows 7 option from the msconfig of Windows 8. Now the system boots automatically into Windows 8 with no problems. If I delete/ format the Windows 7 partition through Windows 8, will it cause any problems?
Also, I found that Windows 7 partition is marked as primary, while the Windows 8 is logical. I
Windows 8 is in C Drive (You can see that its logical)
Windows 7 was in E Drive
There is also a 2.50 GB Simple Basic FAT32 partition with status as - Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) - What is this?
PS: I do have EasyBCD 2.2 and MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition Installed. The latter is not able to modify C drive and set it as primary.
how to make a mirror image in Windows 8. I remember in win7 I could just type "Recovery" and select "Create mirror image" but that doesn't work in Windows 8.
View 5 Replies View Relatedhave our friends computer all set up and ready to go.One of the things that came about during this process is, I learned that you can make a real disk image in Windows 8 without using a third party software program.
Something I didn't think was possible, and you don't have to jump through hoops to do it.
As "Badrobot", pointed out to me.
There is a utility in the Windows Control Panel named Windows 7 File Recovery, (the strange name is probably why I never figure out what it does) It is really the Disk Image utility from Windows 7 and will make a Disk Image of the C: drive on your Windows 8 computer, and has nothing to do with recovering Windows 7 files, as far as I can see.
Why they didn't include this option in Windows 8 Recovery is a mystery.
Anyway the utility is really easy to use, makes a backup very quickly, and also creates a Windows Boot disk that will take you to the recovery interface if your computer won't boot or go to the Recovery Screen.
I haven't actually checked but it says that the option to restore you computer from a Disk Image will now, be available when you open the System Restore Windows along with the Refresh, and Restore options.

On the laptop I'm setting up, I created a new partition just big enough to hold the image and placed it there. On my computer I placed it on a different physical drive so that it will work even if my hard drive dies.
So I have to admit that I complained about Windows 8 not having this capability in error, but I still say that it's Microsoft's fault for hiding it in a location that I never expected to find it, under a name that makes no sense at all.
As long as I'm complaining again, I want to ask, "Why can't you type in "Disk Manager" in the search on the Metro screen and find "Disk Manager".
Half of the problem with Windows 8 is that they changed the name on things that have been the same for years.
Anyway both computers now have Windows 8 generated Disk Images and I feel better. LOL
I still have my third party image as well. BSTS
I got my desktop to make it %300 bigger and it's a good size. Right now I have my metro UI as "Make everything bigger option" but it's still hard to read it on my 42 inch from 15 feet away. Anyway I can make the metro UI (windows 8 UI w/e) scale like the desktop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo let me start by saying that I have checked several things already. I have made sure that the brightness slider is all the way up, I have gone into advanced display settings and turned off any sort of auto dim feature and made sure that all brightness settings are turned all the way up.
I am on an old gateway Vista laptop (dual core cpu, 2GB ram) and I have Windows 8 release preview 32 bit installed on a separate partition on my HDD. When I installed it, everything went fine. Then after running 8 for about 10 minutes, all of a sudden a window popped up above my battery icon in the tray saying that I should replace my battery, and the screen went dim. It was as if I turned the brightness slider all the way down. Well all of the sliders and settings are still at 100% brightness, unplugged or on power.
When I boot back into Vista, everything works fine. There is no battery warning or brightness issues.
I recently upgraded to windows 8, and for some reason within the control panel, I click any options that have the admin shield icon next to them, when i click them, absolutely nothing happens.
And I can't delete any folders from programdata/program files/x86 because it "requires administration action".
Also when removing items from the "uninstall program list" it requires administration action, i say yes, and nothing happens.
Yet, running program's as admin from the desktop, seems to work.
I bought a HP notebook with windows 8.1 installed , but no installation DVD . In order to create one I downloaded from Microsoft , ( from windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media ) the Windows 8.1 Setup ( file OSGS14-WindowsSetupBox-32bitand64bit-English-4141408.exe ) and ran it but always receiving the message : we can't connect right now . I have tried more than 20 times and failed.

Last time when I was using windows xp, 7 and vista on my old pc. Whenever my pc hangs/freezes I used to be able to perform a hard shutdown and know that there won't be any real consequences.
So how to get my current pc to display this toughness because I know that eventually somewhere in the future my PC will hang for whatever reason and I need my PC to be reliable when I do a hard shutdown.
I plan to get a ssd drive and run only windows with few other most useful software on it.

Integrated French (fr-FR) language pack to Windows 8.1 Enterprise en-US (x64).
Integrated French (fr-FR) language pack to Windows 8.1 Enterprise en-US (x86).
Combined the above 2 into an AIO.
I was able to install any of the 4 operating systems to install without requiring the serial number (image only contains enterprise sku).
The problem now is that I have a Windows 8 64-bit installation. I want to upgrade it to 8.1 using the disc. When I put the disc in, it complains that I need to insert the 64-bit disc.
Is there anyway to make my AIO image support upgrades for 32-bit and 64-bit?
When I put Windows 8 in sleep mode (yes sleep mode...I'm not shutting it off), and I turn it on, it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to respond to any input. I'm wondering what I can check to make sure the minimal apps/programs are running, and there are no unnecessary memory hogs churning in the background? How can I test it, monitor it, and optimize it?

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 pre-installed with Windows 8, then after I upgraded to 8.1. How do I make sure I have bootable disks or a backup copy of Windows in case there was a system failure since the PC didn't come with a copy of Windows in CD format?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I first got my new laptop I made and image using Asus backup restore but all it did was make a copy of the restore partition on the hard drive. Is there a way to make an image of what the computer is with all the data and programs there are installed? I had to do a restore and then I had to reinstall everything and reload all my data files. This took a long time to do. It would be so much easier to just have an image of everything just the way it is now.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis seems to be common on all Windows 8 machines as I've tested on many. With Windows 8 if I use the laptop or tablets brightness keys, it goes up in increments it seems of almost like 10%. However if I use touch and slide my finger, you can fine tune the brightness in between. Is there any way to do something similar with the physical keys through an update or plug in? My issue is I'm sensitive to brightness so I use my laptop at the lowest setting, but even 1 notch up is too bright for me, so I'm always using my finger to try and get it right in between which is difficult.
