Unable To Remove Password Requirement
Dec 5, 2013
Friend had Vista on a computer and bought Dell with Windows 8:
1- I am unable to remove password from sign-on. There appears to be no instruction as in Win 7/Vista.
2- Picture icons when transferred show only a general icon not an icon of the pictures as in Vista.
3- My friend accidentally removed the icon for the Instructions/ for Win 8 on the Start Menu. I cannot find the file for us to review.
4- When I try to Create a Password Reset disk, the program asks for a password reset disk disk and password to be installed?

My computer recently began requiring me to use password at startup. I had previously disabled.
I went to NETPLWIZ as suggested elsewhere (Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup)
However, there is no box to uncheck that says "Users must enter username and password to use this computer." (see attachment)
What am I missing? I have also checked the Password Requirement on Wakeup in the Power settings and that shows "No" and the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" option is also not in place.

I'm still adjusting to Windows 8 and most likely I have missed something. I would like to remove the need for a password at login but haven't found a way to do it.

I have to log back on with a password every time my laptop goes to sleep. Can I disable the password requirement so it boots straight to the tiles or desktop? It really is annoying to have to enter the password every time.

After I installed updates today my Dell Latitude 10 Windows 8 tablet and restarted it started to require a password on start up. I went to "run" and typed in "netplwiz" and got to the "User Accounts" window. The problem is that there is no "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box. Is there another way to remove the password from start up?

I've just installed a new HP laptop for my sister, who's upgraded from an old XP desktop. In doing the install, I have inadvertently created two user accounts (I'm new to Win 8), both with passwords. She doesn't want this, as it's a computer for all the family to use. How do I remove the accounts, or, at least remove the need to enter a password every time she boots up?

I have HP pavilion G6 laptop running windows 8.1. Found under c:windows emp a folder with a very long alphanumeric "name". On opening this appears to be an OS installation i.e. it has the following files included:
Program Files
Program Files (x86)
Program data
Sources
Users
Windows
Being in the temp folder I presume can be deleted. However I cannot delete this folder. I get the message that says I require permission from the trusted installer (??) to make changes to this folder.
How do I delete this folder ??

I am having a problem where some documents that used to be on a drive appear in my Run menu dropdown/autocomplete in Windows 8.1 even though I never I never accessed them from the Run menu and the drive in question is no longer even mounted. I searched far and wide and tried many things, but none worked:
Clearing the two "Store x..." checkboxes in "Jump Lists" in the Taskbar and Navigation properties pane has no effect. It does clear my primary history, but the offending entries remain.RunMRU in the registry (generally offered as a tip for clearing/editing the history) does not contain these entries. Removing the whole RunMRU subtree acts more or less the same as #1.Oddly, when I type "X" or "X:" in the run box, but if I change it to "X:" (or enter any more of the relevant path, e.g., "X:document.txt") they no longer show up even though they theoretically match.I have searched the registry pretty thoroughly, including using third-party tools to search binary data.
I found one or two hits, but not all of the relevant data, in ".../ComDLg32/OpenSavePidMRU" and a "RecentDocs" area, but removing them had no effect. Note that some of these hits were plain text and others were binary with null values in between every letter.I've done searches of all the files under C:WINDOWS, with no hits.I have confirmed that the offending drive/directories are not set to index using the Windows Indexing Service, even when the drive is mounted. I have also reset the Windows Index, and they still appear when the index is empty. One of these directories appeared under "recent places" in Explorer. Removing it had no effect.Remounting and than unmounting the original drive has no effect, even though some of the files that appear in the Run dropdown no longer exist.

I have BitLocker enabled on a laptop's boot/OS drive. It has worked well for almost a year but it hung when shutting down the other day and I had to press and hold the power button for 4 seconds to power it off. Now when I power it back on, it asks for the password as normal but then it starts in recovery mode and asks for the recovery key as well. Unfortunately I do not have the recovery key.
I know that the password I am entering is correct because it rejects any other password (as would be expected) and only prompts for the recovery key when I enter the correct password.
Am I going to be able to recover my data without this recovery key it is asking for?

I am new to windows 8 and having trouble with my account alias, I recently purchased a new laptop, when I created my alias email address I used a pop 3 email (ntlworld.com) unaware that that these email addresses cannot be used, I am trying to add a Hotmail.co.uk address but it is saying, "For security reasons, you need to verify your primary alias before you can add another alias" I have received an email in my[url]... email and it says if the address is correct I do not need to do anything, but it can't be verified.

I was having the issue where windows 8 randomly disconnects bluetooth devices, so i tried to remove then reinstall it. When trying to remove, after a while, it comes up with a message saying "Unable to remove device".
So I go straight to device manager and uninstall my mouse from there. it works. I go back to the windows 8 show bluetooth devices menu and the mouse is still there. I hit remove and it works.
Now when i restart my computer its BACK in both device manager and bluetooth device menu. I just want it off and gone.

I'm in program trying to remove the canon MP495 series MP Driver and it will not remove. A window says that the printer is in use by someone. The printer in question is completely turned off. I've shut the computer off and restarted it and it is still there. What now? I was trying to remove a virus and it had programs running to close them first. This is why I had to run recovery to clear it.

My computer died on me so I have jut got an Acer Aspire XC100 which I am pleased with though admit I'm struggling with Windows 8 so I am reverting back to desktop as much as possible.
When I get to Microsoft welcome/ log in page I use the password I created on registration and it's rejected time and time again until eventually it's accepted, this happens with my Windows Live password too.

I am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.

I've a relatively new SanDisk Cruzer Slice 64GB USB pen drive, which I use for work mainly. It has somehow managed to write protect itself and no matter what I do I simply cannot remove it!
I've scanned with Antivirus, nothing found
I've tried regedit - ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM CurrentControlSetControlStorageDevicePolicies
StorageDevicePolices didn't exist so I created a 32 bit Dword string, set to 0 this hasn't done anything
I've tried Diskpart as administrator - DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 298 GB 1024 KB
Disk 1 Online 59 GB 0 B
DISKPART> select disk 1
Disk 1 is now the selected disk.
DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly
Disk attributes cleared successfully.
DISKPART> clean
DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See the System Event Log for more information. I've checked the logs and it doesn't seem to list anything for the drive

I have exhausted my efforts to get an answer out of Microsoft's forums regarding the problem with Windows 8's insistence of flashing straight into the Metro Devices page when installing hardware thus precluding the ability to install a Bluetooth keyboard (or other BT device) without a passkey, an essential element of having a functional BT keyboard in each OS of a multi-boot environment.
Where in the registry is the key that can be altered to stop Windows automatically assigning a passkey? I would imagine it's the same in Windows 7 if I only knew where that was!

I tried booting up my PC which has Windows 8 installed and it was working fine until yesterday.
It has a "Enter Password" screen upon start-up and I think it's a virus because it only lets me enter 10 characters and even though, I do put in the correct password, it still says it's incorrect. The computer also shuts down after 3 unsuccessful attempts.
I have attached a picture of the screen.

I have my Windows 8.1 PC's password policy set so that a password is not required when waking from sleep/shutdown. I used to be able to wake the PC from sleep and not put in a password, and I could turn the PC on after a shutdown without having to put in a password either. Since last week, though, when I turn my PC on, it will boot to the Windows loading screen and after loading for a bit, it will jump into the login screen and immediately report a login error that the username or password is incorrect. This happens before I even get a chance to type a username or password. The fact that I have to type in the username and password is strange because I have the PC set to bypass that option.

I set up the user account using my Microsoft email account. I would like to use a different password on my desktop vs the email password. My email password since it is accessible via web is strong 16 characters long, random characters password and changed often. I would like to change the desktop password to something I can remember, still strong, but I don't change it as often since you have to get physical access to my desktop.
I assumed once I linked to the Microsoft account I could change the password on the machine without it changing my email password.
Is this not possible? I would prefer not to have to lower the security of my email account just to accommodate Windows 8. Never a problem before as my email clients stored the password.
