Network / Sharing :: Streaming Media Content To Xbox 360 Via Windows Media Player

Mar 2, 2012

So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.

I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.

I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.

The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.

On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

UEFI / GPT Support On Installation Media (DVD) Windows 8.1

May 4, 2014

I am trying to make a DVD with UEFI/GPT support for Windows 8

I have an ISO from MSDN - Windows 8.1 Pro VL (x64) - DVD (Danish)
File Name:da_windows_8_1_pro_vl_x64_dvd_2971937.iso
[URL] .....

The SHA1 for the ISO matches the one on MSDN

SHA1: 3142B1DCBDFFC7E46ACE0E89BDB858D2C9B1F233

I used Hashtab v.5.1.23 to verify [URL] .....

If I burn the ISO and boot from the DVD created, it boot just fine in UEFI Bios.

But if I change the ei.cfg file to one of these:

[EditionID]
[EditionID]
Core
(Blank) to have the choice to install Core or Pro
[Channel]
[Channel]
OEM
Retail
[VL]
[VL]

It will not boot in UEFI Bios, it work just fine in Legacy Bios. I can use the program Rufus [URL] .... to create a bootable USB drive, this works perfect. But I would really like to know how to make this work on a DVD. Or/and what I am missing.

This is the original ei.cfg file from the ISO.

Windows 8.1 - Processor Doesn't Support PAE / NX Or SEE2?

Oct 19, 2013

I have a 6 yr old Dell Dimension E520 currently running Windows 8. I tried to upgrade to 8.1 but have been denied because my processor doesn't support PAE, NX or SEE2. I've read some posts that stated that this was an issue preventing them from installing version 8. It wasn't an issue for me since 8 installed. My questions are why would this effect me now and is there a work around?

Hardware Drivers :: Easycap Doesn't Support Windows 8?

Dec 3, 2012

I primarily use an Easycap to convert VHS tapes to digital video files, but unfortunately, I have my device plugged in, and tried installing a few drivers for it, but none of them worked. I've searched across the Internet for an EasyCap driver for Windows 8, but I couldn't even find one, and have come to the conclusion that Easycap doesn't support Windows 8 yet, unless there was something that I didn't know about.

Apps / Software :: Flash Player Stopped Working In Metro Version Of Chrome?

Sep 10, 2013

I've been using Flash Player in the Metro version of Chrome for quite a while now, and it's been fairly useful since the the Metro version of IE is oddly crippled. I like the Metro interface, but not the way web browsers have been crippled to use NO plugins.

Just today, Chrome started giving me a pop-up message saying that I can't use Flash Player unless I run in legacy/desktop mode.

Is this just my version of Chrome messing up in some way, or was this change actually made? I really don't understand why on earth they would cripple the Windows 8/Metro mode all of a sudden. What's going on?

Hardware Drivers :: Toshiba Laptop Doesn't Have Function Key Support Win 8.1?

Mar 11, 2014

My Toshiba laptop does not let any of the function keys operate properly. When I press one, nothing happens. I have also tried holding down the FN key, to no avail. I thought this was a Toshiba issue, but after multiple customer support "experiences" who told me that the operating system was corrupted, I think it may be a Windows 8.1 issue. This happened under Windows 8 too. Toshiba has a keyboard driver for this laptop model for Windows 7, but not 8.1. Is this a common problem with Windows 8.1 (All drivers are up to date and function key support is enabled in the BIOS)

Laptop: Toshiba c55-a5285.

Can't RIP CD To Disc With Windows Media Player

Feb 3, 2014

I am trying to copy a CD to disc using Media Player. When I try to set the destination location by clicking CHANGE in Rip settings/More options/Rip music to this location, nothing happens. I can't set a location. When I click the Rip CD button, I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted."

The Media Player sees the CD and can play the tracks from the CD, so it's not that it can't find the CD.

Windows Media Player Not Working After 8.1 Upgrade

Oct 22, 2013

I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After the update Windows Media Player doesn't recognize any of my libraries even though the correct folders are selected to be included.

I already tried to disable the windows media features in the control panel, reboot and then re-enable but that had no effect.

Incidentally, if I manually start playback of a song from a folder windows media player does work so the issue is just that it won't recognize my libraries.

.wmv File Won't Play On Windows 8 Media Player 12

Apr 18, 2013

I have .wmv files that play perfectly fine on Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12. However, I have tried them on two different computers that are Windows 8. They simply won't play. The error I keep receiving is: "can't play because the items file format isn't supported. Check the store to see if this is available there."

At first I thought it was missing a codec pack, but I tried download the Windows 8 codec and that didn't work.

I do not understand how the .wmv files play on Windows 7 Media Player 12 and now on Windows 8 Media Player. It is just one .wmv file either. These .wmv files need to be available for Windows 8 users.

Again, multiple .wmv files play on Windows 7, but not on two different Windows 8 computers.

Windows Media Player Won't Open - Playing MP3 Files

Feb 6, 2013

Windows Media Player won't open. I noticed this after I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall AVG 2012 so I could install AVG 2013. There was a huge amount of things to be uninstalled and I selected and deleted all of them. Since then I've had a similar message open with Windows Live Mail also, but I went to Programs and Features and did the right click for 'uninstall' on Windows Live Essentials 2012 and then chose "Repair". This seems to have worked.

The message that appears when I try to play an mp3 file by right clicking on it and then choosing "Play with Windows Media Player" (because the program won't open at all) has Windows Installer as a heading and says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Shredder64.msi' in the box below."

I don't know what a program or feature titled "Shredder" has to do with Windows Media Player, but that is what it says. When I click on the 'Cancel' button inside this message box another box opens with the same heading (Windows Installer) and the message says: "The path 'C:UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalDownloaded Installations{45DE3BB5-15C7-489B-8F80-82349413953E}Shredder64.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'Shreder64.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Shredder." Then there is just the OK button.

I have tried to open WMP from the taskbar, the Program Files (x86) file, the windows explorer (File Explorer) to the "Start Menu"/"Programs" file, and also from the Start Screen and the Start Screen All Apps page. It just won't open.

Is there a way to reinstall it without a windows refresh? Or is there a fix?
