Network / Sharing :: Streaming Media Content To Xbox 360 Via Windows Media Player
Mar 2, 2012
So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.
I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.
I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.
I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.
The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.
On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

Have currently got a new laptop with windows 8, am trying to media stream from media player. Basically the xbox cannot locate the pc on the network although the pc can see the xbox. I managed to get it to work briefly but it kept resetting and I don't understand why. I keep going through the same process to try and reset. I have also tried with and without joining a homegroup.
I have been through all the media streaming.
1. deleting the media player library folder files (%userprofile%Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMedia Player )
2. turning on media streaming again, share with devices.
3. setting media sharing service in the registry to automatic.
4. rebuilding the library
I have noticed that when I look at my network I can see the media device when media player is open, but the icon is not what it used to be and has a green play button rather than the media server device. Also when I restart my PC it never loads up as a media server.

I am trying to find a definitive answer to the question of mapping external hard drives. I have 4 external hard drives and would like to know if there is benefit in mapping them or not. Is there benefit in speed/response etc.... I do a lot of video streaming through media centre to xbox 360.

Does the settings for them go back to default (on) every time the modem is reset or the network name changed?
Why does media streaming automatically gets turned on? (I don't even have any public folders)
How can I see who is accessing which files through sharing? Is there any old or new way to check all the shared folders in Windows 8?
I don't want sharing settings to change when the connection, or the connection name has changed; how can I do this?
I only realized that sharing was on when I tried to rename and move a file. It said it is open somewhere else. It didn't show me which computer was accessing what? Can I find that out next time it happens?
Yes, I want to put my music into music folder, but that doesn't mean that I want them to be accessed by the network (As I mentioned before, I don't have any public folders -or somehow I don't see them [show hidden files are on])
When I click any library folders (or even any other folder, even in an external drive); stop sharing is always an option, but clicking it doesn't change anything, stop sharing option still stays on. When I click on sharing settings, I only see my username as the owner.
Any library (or any media file on pc) can be accessed this easily? Even without writing a username and password?

With the following problem regarding media streaming in windows 8. Up until recently I could stream video films from my HP laptop & HP desktop onto the TV via DNLA.
After following several posts on various sites it seems that when I try to start the windows media player network in the services I get the error message "windows could not start the windows media player network sharing service on the local computer.
Error 1068. The dependency group failed to start."
In the dependencies tab in the lower box of the two "the following system components depend on this service"
The box is greyed out and the words no dependencies is displayed.

I'm setting up a new laptop running Windows 8.1. I keep finding the Windows Media Network Sharing Service keeps starting up when the PC is otherwise idle and running at 90% + CPU load for long periods. There is no demand for media streaming when the process is running.
What is this process for? Can I disable it or reconfigure it to reduce the CPU load?

tried to get the EZCast dongle to work ok on a Windows 8 pc. I have looked at several YouTube videos re EZCast & looked at several websites. The only thing I can get to work properly on my TV is some items on my desktop. When you attain the mirror on the TV the resolution changes, (lowers), which means when you try to open any other app an error message reads: This app cannot open. The screen resolution is too low for this app to run. You cannot put the resolution back up to its normal lever, because it automatically lowers again. Also I cannot figure how to have the dongle Wi-Fi & the web Wi-Fi to both be on, so you can mirror websites as they claim.

I installed 8.1 rtm as an upgrade over 8.1 preview and was immediately able to stream live and recorded wtv files/programs to my Xbox Media Center Extender without error.
After a several hours and maybe 1 or two reboots, all video (wtv, avi, etc) streamed to the Media Center Extender turned black after 5-6 seconds. Audio could still be heard, but there was no video and my Xbox remote control functions would stop working. I could go to the Xbox Blade Menu.
I went back to a manually saved restore point and still had the same problem.
Then I did a clean install of 8.1 rtm and again, everything was working properly again. Approx an hour later video streaming to the Xbox Media Center Extender went black.
"Play To" Media Center Extender also had the same problem, only that video would go black after 2 seconds.
If I return to the Xbox home screen and "Play To" Xbox 360 - video steams properly, although expectedly the ff/skip etc would not work.
I noticed that when the video would play normally to MCX one of the two Media Center Extender devices was not completely installed.
One of the devices has the IP address starting with 192.xxx and the other starts with either 127...
It takes some fiddling around, but if I
1. remove the association of the Media Center and Extender
2. delete all Xbox and Extender devices
3. reboot the xbox
4. Reestablish the Xbox and Media Center association
5. Allow the devices to be found and created (sometimes the Media Center Extender w/192. fails to complete installation)
6. Then Disable the MCX in Device Manager that references 192. and leave the one which references the 127
I have had dececent success with getting the above to work, but Every time I turn off my Xbox or leave MCX I need to follow the above steps again.
It's been 1 day since my last clean Win8.1 rtm clean install and I already have am up to Mcx-11 user!
My current build is a clean (non-upgrade)
Windows 8.1 rtm
AMD A8-3850
AMD Radeon HD 6550D (MS WDDM 1.2) v 13.150.102.0
I have also used the AMD Radeon Preview driver
Yesterday Win Update pushed an update to the 6550D
How I can set up a more reliable connection to Xbox Media Extender?

I am trying to copy a CD to disc using Media Player. When I try to set the destination location by clicking CHANGE in Rip settings/More options/Rip music to this location, nothing happens. I can't set a location. When I click the Rip CD button, I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted."
The Media Player sees the CD and can play the tracks from the CD, so it's not that it can't find the CD.

Has there been any updates to the windows media player for the RTM version? This thing should have been updated centuries ago. I'm sure some people might use other programs but for people without internet or knowledge that there are other programs out there they should update this player. Not a fan of xbox music.

Along with all the other things, that don't seem to work in the Windows 8.1 beta, I noticed that the Media Player is also missing, while they did only say Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center Beta.
Are they planning on totally removing Media Player also?

What media player can I use on Windows 8, either a freebie or one that I pay for. I used to use Windows Media Player 11 for XP on my desktop (which is now no longer available). I have got my music on my desktop and just want to manage my own music and listen to CD's on my laptop (which has a cd drive). I don't know whether I can use a freebie program or which media player is the most suited.

I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After the update Windows Media Player doesn't recognize any of my libraries even though the correct folders are selected to be included.
I already tried to disable the windows media features in the control panel, reboot and then re-enable but that had no effect.
Incidentally, if I manually start playback of a song from a folder windows media player does work so the issue is just that it won't recognize my libraries.

I have .wmv files that play perfectly fine on Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12. However, I have tried them on two different computers that are Windows 8. They simply won't play. The error I keep receiving is: "can't play because the items file format isn't supported. Check the store to see if this is available there."
At first I thought it was missing a codec pack, but I tried download the Windows 8 codec and that didn't work.
I do not understand how the .wmv files play on Windows 7 Media Player 12 and now on Windows 8 Media Player. It is just one .wmv file either. These .wmv files need to be available for Windows 8 users.
Again, multiple .wmv files play on Windows 7, but not on two different Windows 8 computers.

I am having problems with my Windows Media Player 12 on my Windows 8.1 Enterprise PC, when I publish a video from my JVC Everio HD Camcorder (Model NO.: GZ-HM300SEK).
Every time I click to play a video and when I skip the video along.. the image freezes for 2 seconds and it continues with a stutter. I am guessing that the PC doesn't handle a bit of HD specs (if I am right).

Windows Media Player won't open. I noticed this after I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall AVG 2012 so I could install AVG 2013. There was a huge amount of things to be uninstalled and I selected and deleted all of them. Since then I've had a similar message open with Windows Live Mail also, but I went to Programs and Features and did the right click for 'uninstall' on Windows Live Essentials 2012 and then chose "Repair". This seems to have worked.
The message that appears when I try to play an mp3 file by right clicking on it and then choosing "Play with Windows Media Player" (because the program won't open at all) has Windows Installer as a heading and says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Shredder64.msi' in the box below."
I don't know what a program or feature titled "Shredder" has to do with Windows Media Player, but that is what it says. When I click on the 'Cancel' button inside this message box another box opens with the same heading (Windows Installer) and the message says: "The path 'C:UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalDownloaded Installations{45DE3BB5-15C7-489B-8F80-82349413953E}Shredder64.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'Shreder64.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Shredder." Then there is just the OK button.
I have tried to open WMP from the taskbar, the Program Files (x86) file, the windows explorer (File Explorer) to the "Start Menu"/"Programs" file, and also from the Start Screen and the Start Screen All Apps page. It just won't open.
Is there a way to reinstall it without a windows refresh? Or is there a fix?

I've got a ton of MP3s that I want to export to a USB stick. For the life of me, I can't find a place in Windows Media Player to compress the audio when synching. iTunes has that feature and it's super convenient, but
1) I can't use the USB stick in iTunes, and
2) I can't find the compress feature in WMP, so I'm stuck.
