Can't Boot Computer Anymore After Upgrade

Feb 2, 2013

I just upgraded my desktop to Windows 8 from Windows 7 using digital download. Everything was running smoothly as I was installing apps and drivers. My graphics driver required a reset after installing, and now when I try to boot up my computer, after the bios and initial windows logo happen, the screen goes dark and the computer stalls. After a while it'll give me 4 beeps. I tried the automatic repair, which seems to be the only thing I can do since I can't boot to the start menu, but the result is the same. I used digital so I have no media to boot from, is there anything I can do to fix this?

Computer Won't Start Anymore - HDMI Stopped Working

Oct 24, 2013

Yesterday I came home and my computer wouldn't start anymore. nothing happenened so I figured it was my "feeding" (in case this is a weird translation: what I mean is the power distribution)

So I bought a new one, hooked up all the plugs, well not all.

Computer works again, but my hdmi cable stopped working on my tv. I tried hooking up my monitor (which normally runs on dvi) but that also didn't work.

Is it possible i forgot a plug?

Interrupted During Wake Up - Can't Boot Anymore

Oct 5, 2013

I had a very very disturbing experience in which I was forced to shut down the computer, but failed and accidentally sent it to sleep.

Unfortunately, it never managed to wake up. It stayed during half an hour blocked early in the restarting process... I took my chance with a hard-reset.

And then it becomes insane. It gives me the cold shoulder, just hanging in a "Reverting changes" task. It's been a good while too.

I stand in awe wondering how is it even possible to break my setup like this. Considering the damn thing came with no restoring CD of any kind, on a scale of it's all fine to you're screwed, how exactly would you rate me ?

Computer Will Not Boot To SSD / Forcing To Use Windows Boot Manager

May 29, 2014

I had an issue with my Windows 8 where I was forced to reinstall it. I have completely wiped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. However, now it will not let me pick my boot order. It is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager as my Boot Option 1. If I use anything else, I just get a black screen with a blinking line cursor.

It didn't use to do this before I had to reinstall. I'm not sure how to fix this. It also will not let me choose F11 boot options, it always is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager.

How do I make it so I can boot from whichever boot order I want, instead of using Boot Manager?

Setup Installation :: Install Windows 8.1 Upgrade (not OEM) On New Computer

May 17, 2014

I installed Windows 8 Pro on my now defunct computer way back when it was first released by downloading the files and saving them to hard disk before upgrading from Windows 7 Pro. I then upgraded to 8.1 and now 8.1 Upgrade, but that computer crashed badly. I have removed the hard discs and disposed of the computer. I am in the process of buying a new computer and want to install Windows 8.1 upgrade onto it, on a Solid State Drive. I can copy or clone the original "C" drive from the defunct computer onto the SSD, but, of course, none of the other specs would be the same. (I am taking advantage of the disaster to upgrade my specification. - A better CPU, and a better motherboard with more SATA and USB3 connections and, above all, a greater memory capacity of 8MB RAM, - the defunct computer only had SATA and USB2 connections with only 3MB Ram). Will a clone of the "C" drive work to give me Windows 8.1 upgrade on the new computer? If not, how can I transfer the licence from the defunct computer (I cannot get into it now, although I can get into the "C" Hard Drive)? I have the original download of Windows 8 from Microsoft available on the hard drive, although I do not think in a bootable format, just as a file on the harddrive. I can, however, install Windows 7 as I have my Windows 7 CD. how I can transfer my licence and install Windows 8.1 Pro Upgrade

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Upgrade Has Rendered Computer Unusable

Nov 23, 2012

Windows 8. I upgraded my Dell laptop the weekend it came out and performance on my laptop has slowly degraded. Now I'm too the point where my computer is so slow, it just won't work. Reboots take forever. 10-15 minutes from startup until I can login. Another 10-15 minutes before the Desktop is up. But still, apps won't launch. When I can launch the Task Manager, it says my hard drive is at 100% utilization, even though I have not launched any apps. I went through and removed unneccesary items from the startup menu. My computer is a couple years old, but I was under the impression that if the computer ran Win7, it could run Windows 8. My computer has an Intel Centrino 2 processor with 8GB RAM.

How do I go about doing a reinstall of the OS? When I originally upgraded, I selected the "Bring Nothing Over" option.

After Upgrade To 8.1 Pro Computer Lost Ability To Sleep / Hibernate

Nov 2, 2013

After my upgrade to 8.1 Pro my computer lost the ability to sleep/hibernate. After following many tips on here, I managed to get sleep & hibernation onto the shutdown menu so manual operatin works okay.

The automatic mode is still a work in progress but I'm wondering if I've managed to get it to go into automatic sleep mode but not as yet hibernation.

I prefer to use hibernation so don't really know alot about sleep mode - I've got it configured to go into hibernation (10 minutes ) before sleep (15 minutes) in the power options.

After a period of time the computer will automatically attempt to enter either sleep or hibernation mode - not sure which. The screen switches off and the cpu increases in volume as if its consuming more power. The blue light flashes slowly which to me signifies that it has entered sleep mode. The computer has in effect shut down but sounds like its in overdrive with either the cpu or fan going ten to the dozen. Clicking the mouse wakes it up and brings it back to the sign-on screen.

So what's going on here? Is this a failed attempt at sleep mode as trying manual sleep brings the same result. It certainly doesn't go into automatic hibernation which is something I'm ultimately trying to resolve.

So I'm not sure if I've solved automatic sleep or not as its unbearably noisy and not something I can put up with.

Stuck On Boot Screen After Upgrade To 8.1

Oct 20, 2013

I upgraded my Win 8 to Win 8.1. After hiberanation or shutting down a computer I'm stuck on boot screen when I turn it on (there's a win logo and circle stops spinning) and I need than to turn off computer by pressing the turn off button. After the restart there is no problem! And after I forcely shut it down, there is no problem also!

I tried clean install (fresh windows 8.1 with formatted hard disk), refresh your pc, startup repair - nothing works.

While I was on windwos 8, I didn't have any problems!

After Upgrade Unable To Access BIOS Or Boot Menu?

Nov 13, 2012

My Acer Extensa 5620Z originally came with Vista, then I clean installed Win 7, now upgraded to Win 8. Since the latest upgrade, I am unable to access BIOS or the boot menu. The black and white boot screen used to say to press F12 for boot menu, and something else for Setup, those messages are no longer there. And those key combinations do not work. I've also tried some other combinations I've found in searches - F2, Alt-F10, ctrl F10, alt ctrl F10, F8, del, esc. None work.

Could the upgrade has modified the firmware somehow? Boot screen says Phoenix bios, TrustedCore v1.32 - I think that is the same it has been.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Upgrade - Old HDD F Is Listed As System And Can't Boot Without It

Jun 10, 2014

Been running this system since 2010 win7 and upgraded to win 8.

When I switched over to win 8 I also bought an ssd drive (C) and it seemed to be working fine ever since.

I recently bought a couple 3TB drives and wanted to replace the old HDD (F), installed the drives, transferred all data off F and then shut down the pc. I took F out of the pc and it won't boot.

Going from loads of tutorials on here I found that F was listed as active and a system drive.

Any attempts at making it inactive and activating C resulted in nothing. I used my startup repair disc but there was no OS listed to repair??

Whenever C is active and F inactive, I've no options at all with startup repair.

Computer Won't Boot - 0xc000000e (Win 8.1 Pro X64)

Mar 18, 2014

My computer has been working fine without issue until late last night.

I turned it on and went to get a drink and noticed that the computer had shut off.

Surprised, I returned to turn it back on and then I saw the motherboard logo and immediately a blue screen that said, "Recovery, Your Computer Needs to be Repaired." and along with that, an error code of: 0xc000000e.

The issue I see is that once I go into the UEFI (BIOS), under Boot Priority, it always said "Windows Boot Manager" since I'm using an SSD where Win 8.1 Pro x64 is installed and created a GPT instead of an MBR. Now, I am seeing "Microsoft Windows" instead of "Windows Boot Manager" and I cannot find it anywhere!

I used DiskPart after inserting the installation DVD in Command Prompt and checked to see that all three partitions are there - 111GB (120GB SSD), 300MB called Recovery, and an unlabeled 100MB partition. All three partitions are there.

I tried to use:

bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

I tried going through this guide: How To Rebuild the BCD in Windows

However, when I "rebuildbcd", I get only the following (in BOLD):

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

[Successfully scanned Windows installations.Total identified Windows installations: The operation completed successfully.]

It doesn't say whether it was successful or not and the source drive keeps showing up.

What I mean is:

C:ootrec /rebuildbcd

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

C:

I'm not sure why it doesn't give me a success/fail message. I tried it several times to no avail. I am therefore unable to proceed with that guide in that link above.

When I reboot and go into the UEFI, it still shows "Microsoft Windows" and I can't get "Windows Boot Manager".I ran CHKDSK /R and after that the UEFI did show "Windows Boot Manager" but when I rebooted, I got the same "Recovery" blue screen with the same error code (0xc000000e) - and Microsoft Windows was showing up under Boot Priority #1 instead of "Windows Boot Manager." The system was working perfectly until last night and I need to have my computer running properly.

When Hit Power Button Computer Would Not Boot?

Mar 18, 2014

I'm working on a gal's computer (HP 2000 laptop). Her problem? When she hit the power button, the computer would not boot. No BIOS screen, no boot screen, no HP screen. Nothing. Just a blank, black, backlit screen with no activity on the HDD indicator LED. If I remove the hard drive, however, then the computer will boot to the point of giving me a message instructing me to install a hard drive.

So you'd imagine the issue is with the hard drive. I hook her HDD into a free slot on my desktop to check the device. I'm able to access all files and it checks out okay. But if I put it into her computer, all you get upon touching the power button is a blank, black, backlit screen.

I'm assuming at this point that the boot partition on her HDD may be corrupted and a reformat and clean install are needed. I was able to back up her personal folders. However, there is no COA sticker on her computer (thus no Windows Key), just a "Windows 8" sticker. She said her computer did not come with a set of discs either (HP puts recovery data on a second HDD partition, which I am unable to access at this time). I asked her to contact HP and request a set of recovery discs for her computer, so that is where the process is at right now: waiting for a reply from HP.

Setup Installation :: Computer Is Unable To Boot Into Windows 8

Sep 15, 2014

Recently I was trying to upgrade my Windows 8 Pro computer to Windows 8.1 Pro. But I had no working USB sticks so I thought I could make a NTFS partition into my hard drive and extract the Windows 8.1 Pro installation setup files on there. So when I restarted my computer, it booted up into the Windows 8.1 Pro installing setup but said that I needed to boot up into Windows and put the installation media back in. But I could not and just kept booting into the installation.

So I thought that if I delete the partition I could go back to Windows. So I did with DISK PART. Now when I restarted it, it now gives me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I'm guessing that when I deleted that partition, there is unallocated space left and my computer is trying to read off that but not the Windows partition.

I have a Compaq computer ...

Computer Will Not Boot Up Past The Windows Splash Screen

Apr 8, 2014

I'll start my computer, it will post and go into the BIOS just fine, it will always get past the screen right after the bios (with the motherboard logo and the windows spinning dots) and then it will go to a blank screen of blackness. It's had this problem off and on for a while, and I put in a new power supply about 2 weeks ago and it fixed the problem but now it will only boot into safe mode.

It has no problems in safe mode and I have not seen it BSOD once.

This has been happening for a couple of months now, and it used to be sporadic on the old power supply, but then it always happened, and now it seems to be happening all of the time now as well. Oddly, if I were to disconnect the ethernet cable it seemed to boot up better on the old power supply, but it doesn't matter what I disconnect now, it doesn't seem to want to boot up past the spinning logo thing before you actually get into any kind of windows 8.

Debugging :: Windows 8 - Computer Wont Boot Up - Get The 3F0 Error?

Nov 29, 2013

Computer: HP Pavilion DM4 3070-se (Beats Edition)
OS: Windows 8

It would not boot up, and when I started it the BIOS showed a '3F0 hard drive not exist' error. I left it until this morning, and tried again. Everything booted up and it reached the Windows 8 login screen -- I have automatic login enabled, but the screen freezes (spinner indicator stops suddenly) and the screen goes black. It restarts again, and sometimes I get the Windows 8 repair screen, sometimes I get the 3F0 error again.

The inconsistency makes me think that something is screwed up hardware-wise, but I'm not totally sure. Apparently, from reading online, the problem could be the HDD (I don't think this is the case) or a poor cable connection (most likely), or a software problem.

Because I don't have recovery media for Windows 8 (I installed it on a USB drive I don't have with me) I can't try a system refresh or restore, but I'd rather avoid those if at all possible.

Do you all think that a good option might be to take it to a hardware repair place and have them check the cables for errors?

Laptop Won't Hibernate Anymore?

May 15, 2014

I noticed a (very long) thread that is exploring issues with Windows 8.1 not sleeping properly, and while I've also had issues putting my computer to sleep, I'm more concerned right now with its inability to hibernate. I've been having my laptop hibernate most nights since I got it last year, and it's been working fine (with the occasional shut down instead of hibernation) up until a few days ago. It will not hibernate anymore. I have every power option set to 'hibernate': it's supposed to go into hibernation automatically when I close the lid, push the power button, anything. I've also set up a shortcut on my desktop that used to put it into hibernation, but now, when I go to wake it up afterwards, I've found its has shut down and closed all my apps and documents. At first I thought I was waiting too long between sessions and it automatically shut down after 12 hours for example, as I've recently come home from college and I'm going longer between wake-ups, but last night I put it into 'hibernate' and an hour later tried waking it up only to find it had had shut down again.

I've got Windows 8.1 but hibernate was working for weeks on it until recently. I've DEFINITELY got hibernate enabled in my power options, I've checked about a million times. I don't think I installed or changed anything around the time I started having these issues.
