View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been having some strange issues with transfers from a USB 3.0 compact flash reader lately. When I start the transfer the speeds top out at 130 Mb/s but soon drop to 0 Mb/s. This seems to happen the moment that Windows 8 "populates" the Explorer window. When I am getting normal speeds explorer shows no files in it's window that have transferred. Once the files that have transferred populate the window the transfer drops significantly for the remaining transfer. I have recorded a small video to show this. Very bizarrre. Almost seems like an indexing thing.

Today, I restart my PC and now it refuses to load Windows. I have changed nothing recently, neither in BIOS nor software. It was a simple, routine restart and it hasn't worked since. I even tried re-imaging my primary drive from 1 month ago (after trying more recent images) and I still have the issue. In BIOS, all drives are recognized, bootable discs work fine. I tried resetting the BIOS just in case to no avail. Also tried disconnecting all USB devices, no good. I can't even get Linux to load, so I am suspecting my SSD might be shot--but it shows fine in BIOS. I don't mind replacing the drive, but I want to be more certain that is the issue before I spend the money. Or would this possibly be a motherboard issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to connect two windows 8 laptops (dell and asus) to my home network (and internet). At the same time I have connected 2 xp laptops and 3 kindles with no problems. My security consists of using mac addresses only and all other security is turned off.
The offending laptops will also only show the 5gz and not the 2.4gz in available networks (one laptop is brand new and the other is about 1.5 years old). I have also disabled all security on one of the laptops to see if that was the problem (it was not). When trying to connect I have two basic reactions. The first is that its taking too long (cannot connect) and the other is that there is limited connectivity. In addition to that I am sometimes told that the ip address is not right (malformed, I think).
I got the mac addresses, of the offending laptops, by the standard cmd/ipconfig /all path and choose the wireless wi ip but have also tried the other wireless as well with no better results (just making sure)
I also have an edimax extender plugged in and it works. The laptops also show fewer network connections than my asus 1000ha w/d-link dongle. My own laptop, incidentally, is clicked into the 5gz network connection directly from the router (edimax kinda redundant <g>)
I posted this in windows 8 topics as I think this is probably a windows 8 problem given the ability to connect other machines with no problem.
The router is a netgear wndr3400 and is working just fine for all but the windows 8 machine.
My process "System" which leads to C:WindowsSystem32 toskrnl.exe uses about 10 CPU all the time. I'm wondering what it does, and if there is a way to lower the usage.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased 3 identical Gateway laptop computers to set-up and ship to relatives overseas. All three are running Windows 8. I want each one of them to have the same programs and applications without spend hours or days setting this all up. Is it possible to burn an ISO image of one hard drive and use it to clone the other two identical laptops? I guess sort of like the old "ghost" process. If so, would I need to wipe the other drives first?

View 1 Replies View RelatedBeen running the upgrade to 8.1 from a factory installed Win 8 system on my Dell 5720 laptop. Download took quite long and now installation is taking even longer. It went through multiple steps on the Dell logo splash screen starting with "Getting Ready". Then it went to "Setting Up". Another lengthy time period. Now its doing "Setting up a few more things" and has been hung at 28% for over an hour. Hard drive activity very low and sporadic.

When I want to watch any video on Youtube - it's almost impossible, cause it jams. Even when I down it to 360p. It's about 50 percent of CPU usage, sometimes even more. I tried to install older version of Flash Player - no effects.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned on Bitlocker on three new Windows 8.1 laptops and saved the 48-digit recovery keys and associated identifiers, but I forgot to indicate which laptops they are associated with. Is there any way to find the identifiers/recovery keys on my laptops so I can document this? Or do I have to decrypt the laptop drives, turn off Bitlocker, and start all over again to generate new identifiers/recovery keys? My only options under Manage Bitlocker are Suspend protection, Back up your recovery key, and Turn off BitLocker.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been having some issues with the system process using around 10-20 percent of my cpu lately. I gather that the general solution is to find a problematic driver using kernrate and process explorer, but I can't seem to find a version of kernrate that will work on 64 bit machines.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy mother bought a samsung notebook, which came with Windows 8 original version installed. There is a adhesive for windows 8 confirmation on it. I can send a video of it, but I wanted to change it to Windows 7, installed on my computer that I was used to. So, I made a backup of my Windows 7 and tried to install it on my notebook.
Unfortunately, I deleted all from the notebook and forgot to take the serial key or to change my partition table from GPT to MBR, so I can't install Windows 7.
I only want to recover my Windows 8 serial key, so I can re-install it , change the partition table to MEG and install Windows 7!
My dad recently had his old vista computer die. I decided (after another discussion here on the forums) that Id backup his old OS, move it to the new computer, and then upgrade it to the newer windows. The problem I am having is that once I got the backup onto a partition of the new computer it gets a 0xc000000f error so I cant boot into it and do the upgrade. I tried all the normal bootrec options (rebuildbcd, fixboot, fixmbr) but none of them worked and I ran a chkdsk. I tried putting in the vista install media to repair the OS so I could boot into it and do the upgrade but the vista boot disk didnt recognize the OS (I think windows 8 might have something to do with that).

When I installed Windows 8.1 RTM, it looks like they removed it. I've been using it on Windows 7 x64 for a while and it has saved my skin a few times.
I did a Google search and basically found that if you install Windows 8 first, then upgrade to 8.1 RTM, it leaves Backup & Restore available. I want to install 8.1 RTM directly, is there any way to install Backup & Restore or keep it somehow?
I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..
Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?
If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....
I am trying to use Windows Backup in Windows 8 on my HP Envy h8-1414 to my external HD and I get a message saying something like, "Your last backup did not complete." The reason given is The Device is Not Ready or something like that. The error code is 0x80070015. Yet from the Desktop/Computer I can read and write to the external disk with no difficulty.
I don't want to go much further with the set up until until I can make a good backup.
Win 8x64. Just got a UAC flag that Windows backup app wasn't working (see attached). Looking at Windows 7 File Recovery in the CP, all it shows is "Backup or Restore Your Files" at top and the rest of the page, which usually has some choices, is blank. Never seen that before. Rebooted to be sure.

I re-installed Windows and I have some drives that are setup in a raid configuration which has a system image I created some time ago after I performed a fresh install of windows 8.1. However, I can't seem to get recovery to locate it.
Is there a way of restoring from this backup to save my having to install each programme from scratch? The file is 141 gig and is an ADI file with an XML and disk image text file.
