I got a new Windows 8 computer about 2 months ago; added a new user for my kids about 3-4 weeks ago and since then have noticed that text for all users, within Windows and IE (address bar, top pulldown menus, icon descriptions on desktop) now all appear in a symbol mode that is unintelligible. When I open up Windows (ie, control panel or other Windows dialogue boxes) the text has all been changed to symbols as well. I called customer support for my computer (Lenovo) but no support ....
So the hard drive on my computer failed. I do not have the product key for this computer and can not get it of the failing hard drive because it does not power up at all. But the computer does have the built in product key in the bios. Is there a way that I can re install windows 8 on this computer and activate with the bios key with out getting the recovery media from the manufacture.
Two days ago my ISP replaced my modem-router for a new one. Ever since the replacement, my main desktop computer won't connect to the internet "immediately". I checked the connection via ethernet and WiFi with my other computers (even tested every single one of my ethernet cables) and they work perfectly fine, except for my main desktop computer.
What my desktop does:
When I turn it on I have to wait for around an hour before it connects to the internet. During that hour, it attempts to identify something (I guess the IP? - the yellow warning icon gets displayed) and after 3 seconds of attempting, the connection drops and it goes back to saying "No connection". The connection is being made via Ethernet cable and I tried the troubleshoot but it continues to say that I need to plug-in a ethernet cable to my computer, thing is it is already plugged in and like I stated above, the cable worked fine with all my other computers. My desktop used to work perfectly fine with my old modem-router.
I attempted to do do some troubleshooting refreshing my ip using the cmd with admin privileges but nothing worked as it said every time that there was no media connection. My desktop just randomly connects to the internet by itself after an hour of attempting to connect and disconnecting and once it gets connected it works perfectly fine until I restart my computer or turn it off and then the next day it'll be the same thing over again.
This has gotten extremely annoying, what can I do to fix this and further prevent it from happening? - I updated all my drivers and it's still the same. It'll just connect to the internet whenever it wants to.
I run the Cleartype text tuner wizard and chose a thicker text setting but it only works on IE, the rest of programs are unaffected, is there a way to make that wizard work for ALL programs
I turned on my laptop and after I logged on all my letters were replaced with symbols. I then restarted my laptop and now even my log in screen is symbols and when I get to the desktop my screen just keeps flashing and I can't click on anything. It just keeps flashing and loading nothing. I can't do anything on it. I didn't install anything the last time it was on either and I'm the only person who uses the laptop.
Problem with Windows 8.1 on December 31st, and then I found a video on youtube with the same problem.
I couldn't see any wireless connections and my sound didn't work no matter what. So I ended up having to factory reset my computer. Sucks. It happened again later, but I system restored that crud and it was restored. It ever happens again without any system restore points that I can use.
I use several symbols often (not just on word docs, but also online). Instead of having to turn on the numlock and typing alt+#, I would like to be able to use shorter shortcuts.
I know that for word docs, I can set the shortcut to whatever I want (strangely, OneNote doesn't let me...). Is there a way I can change the shortcut sequences that could be applied oustide of word docs?
After installing Windows 8 Pro my @ and " symbols are on the wrong keys, how do I swap them. I have checked the language for my keyboard and all is good.
My Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.
The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".
I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.
If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, how to fix this?
I want to make keyboard symbols, specifically the Spanish inverted exclamation point and other special characters. Everything I have found online says I need to make sure that num lock is on and then use the proper ALT function. However, I am on a laptop with no number pad and no num lock key. I can't figure out how to make these special characters.
I've had a lot of trouble with my samsung laptop. The HDD has been replaced but I now cannot do a refresh or reset. I get the message"Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files". The laptop came with Windows 8 installed so I do not have the installation discs. I can do a factory restore by pressing f4 on start up successfully but still shows the above message trying to refresh. What caused this and what can I do about it?
I am running windows 8.1. I just turned on my computer and got the following screen. It wont recognize keyboard input as normal characters nor will it allow me to connect to the internet. It was perfectly on 3 hrs ago before I turned it off then back on again.
The link below shows you what my current windows 8.1 screen looks like.
How I have my phone set up: Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
I suppose I could use Word instead of notepad, but I don't want to wait forever for the files to open. Windows8 and 7 will let you open as many different copies of the same txt file as you want. With keeping my computer on most of the time, and doing various things, sometimes I forget that I have a file open. The most common instance is my list of software keys and activation codes. I had to reinstall something yesterday and had the file open, and it ended up behind a bunch of windows. Much later, I bought a new piece of software and had to add something to the list, a couple of somethings. I saved and closed--fine. Then, turning the computer off, it told me that my "Versions" file was still open--did I want to save, or what? At that point, I had to cancel the shutdown, open the saved copy, compare the saved copy with the one that was still open to see which information was different. Obviously, at that moment, I had not figured out which copy was which. If I had saved, it would have overwritten the changes, by reverting to the old version that I had open. I've had this happen several times, sometimes with new information in each file. I fail to understand why, when I try to open a txt file, Windows does not alert me that it is already open, and do I want to open another copy?
I recently set my dual monitor up at work, and since then on the top hand corner of my second monitor, its showing Windows 8 Enterprise, blurred in with something else?
I had issues with fuzzy text in certain applications and fuzzy icons in notification area immediately after updating to 8.1.
I found this was due to 8.1's new "improved" DPI Scaling options and affects many people.
I just assume it was always like that and read fuzzy text from now on. "It was always like that right?"
If you just upgraded to 8.1 and now your fonts look weird, text is harder to read, or tray icons look fuzzy/blurry then this should fix it:
-Right click desktop, choose "Screen resolution" -Click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" -Check the box "Let me choose one scaling level for all of my displays" -Click the "Apply" buttin below the above setting -You will now have to log out and then back in to test to see if this fixed your DPI Scaling issues.
I have a dual boot Windows 8 (64bit) and win7 (32bit). wen i have text file to open in Windows 8 from win7 it will be denied access. all protections are off, uac, in the register different things.
My computer randomly crashed while I was playing watch a stream and talking to a friend on mumble. The first blue screen gave me an error and had a text saying critical damage or something like that. After the computer restarted, it gave just a blank blue screen after the windows logo and would stay like so for several minutes before restarting again. I tried the shift + F8 method to try and get into safe mode, but it did not work. I also thought it may or may not have been my ram so I individually took out my ram and tested each single one. It still came to the same result. I also tried using my backup RAM, but had the same result. I am able to get into bios however, but after that I cannot even pass the logo screen.

The icons on my start menu and text were about right size but today something happened and they got a lot smaller. Now the text is hard to read with a mag glass. How to make them big again?
After update to 8.1 first thing I noticed is that my installation windows/boxes are blurry, both graphics, text and buttons. Then I opened up Logitech Setpoint and found out that its blurry too. Applications such and Office or Adobe do not have blurriness in text or interface.
Also I noticed that text in Metro apps such as mail goes from smudgy to clear in few flicks whenever new text renders on screen.
If I adjust scaling myself (by percentage not by slider) text gets a lot better in desktop environment but with custom scaling I cant get the window/box size or font size right, its either too small or too big.
I tried playing with ClearType but it didn't to shizz.
I also have installed the latest drivers for Intel and Nvidia before update and after update just to make sure.
Not sure if this is entirely a Win 8 problem but ever since I installed it I have 3 network printers 2 x Kyocera and 1 x Epson. The Kyocera now do not allow me to print from MS office. All drivers are saying up to date and no errors. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both printers.
When I print from Word or Excel I get an error message like this
PCL XL error
Subsystem: TEXT Error: IllegalGlobalTrueTypeSegment Operator: ReadFontHeader Position: 24
If I print a table or anything with a border it will just print a blank table but no text
I have an Asus K52Je, and freshly installed Windows 8 on it. What I have noticed is that I cannot highlight text anymore in almost all places after typing with keyboard. As a workaround I just double tap the WINDOWS key on my keyboard and it works again as long as I don't type anything, then it goes bad again.
Over the past couple days I've been experiencing a BSOD 1 or 2 times a day during what seem like, random times. The BSOD is a little funky because the screen is skewed pretty badly and no text is visible. Where do I start troubleshooting this error?
I added classic shell and I actually have no problems with navigating and it feels fast. I like it. BUT, firefox and chrome will not load web pages properly and sometimes not at all.....I don't notice this happening on IE, but only fox and chrome. What happens is, when you're surfing web pages, suddenly, you get something like server doesn't exist or yahoo handler error, or the page will just load weird with blue texts. You can refresh and the page will sometimes load fully, OR you can just close, clear cookies and then everything is fine, then a few webpages later, it starts all over again. When the web pages do load, they load fast and as normal.
I've tried SEVERAL things from reading online. I did the DNS flush, I disabled d-bugging in the device manager under adapters, ran ccleaner to clean all history (even the past 24 hrs), I uninstalled both broswers and reinstalled. The only AD on I have on chrome and firefox is adblock, but it's not that because I removed This isn't happening on my windows 7 desktop
Windows 8 has been having very strange rendering errors, the desktop still works fine but the rest is all strange blurred with black boxes. What the problem is it just suddenly showed up as that.
System Specs are: Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (Quad) 16GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 Windows 8 64-Bit (Downloaded from DreamSpark)
I was wondering if it's possible to take windows 7 from my first computer and install it to my new one that has windows 8 on it (windows 8 has problems with its wifi where windows 7 worked perfectly).
Just starting to use my new windows 8 getting frustrated!! How can I print selected text in a email or web page without printing the complete email or web page?? When I select the text and select devices and printer (Canon Pixma MX512) I don't get the option of 'print selection'
