Feb 23, 2014Where can I find and set the file associations? Also, where do I set which application does what?
I need the right-click>Send To>Mail Recipient to go to the default mail client.

how to dis-associate the file associations in "all my storage" There are associations that stop me from associating my own files. I have a hunch it's a way to make you buy the full version. what a croc microsoft.

Even though Firefox is already registered with file types such as: .html, .htm, .ftp, etc, it won't let me uncheck them as well as for other programs.
I don't want to change the Firefox associations, though.
I've also tried : Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program . To no avail either.
FileTypesMan didn't work much of either.
It appears third party software and the usual method, aka Default programs, can no longer change some file type associations so easily now.

I need to be able to click on a .vnc file and have Windows 8 run
vncviewer.exe -config [that file I just clicked on] .
or literally, vncviewer.exe -config "%1" if this were windows XP
But I can only select the program to run it, and not add these extra arguments or commands as part of it.
How can I change file type associations in Windows 8?
For example .jpg files open in Photos app, fine, but when I right-click and choose "edit" Paint opens up. I want to change it from Paint to Photoshop and there seems to be no way to do that.
In Windows 7 I used Creative Elements Power Tools for this, but it is not compatible with Windows 8.
I just don't want to use Windows Media player. It is not even there on my pc I guess.
Still, several of my file associations are showing windows media player as associated with it.
When I go to control panel - default program, and untick associations for wmp, then don't stick. unticking them doesn't work, they reappear the next time.
I also have foobar2000, winamp, vlcplayer installed, I have put default for these programs.
However, all the extensions associated with wmp do not appear in the list of extension for these three programs, so I am not able to set them.
I just don't want to use wmp. I want those extensions to remain unassociated with any program, so that when and if I ever player any file with that extension, windows should ask me how to open that, and then I can select .
How to remove wmp associations from all extensions listed there, even without associating it with another program.
Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.
Note: c: est contains my offline image.
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
[Code] .....
To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".bmp" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
<Association Identifier=".dib" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
[Code] .....
And then:
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations
dism /image:c: est /import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:AppAssoc.xml

View 3 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 FILE EXPLORER has begun prompting me that it "can't find" or items "do not exist" when I try to manipulate the files in any manner. Of course they DO exist and oddly, if I repeat the command, the job gets done.
So...the functions seem to work, but I must repeat them and deal with this pesky prompt.
I am reluctant to use System Restore as I have made some time consuming changes to my OS since this problem started and do no suspect it will be successful.

I use Firefox and am 64 bit.
The problem is that I can't install the .NET Framework 3.5 on my Windows 8.1 because when i try to install it, appears:
"Can't install the following feature: .NET Framework 3.5
Can't find the specified file. Error: 0x80070002"
The same if i download the dotNetFx35setup.exe setup from Microsoft Website. I tried also in other 2 ways suggested here (Installazione di .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8) :
- In Control Panel -> Programs -> Enable or disable Windows Features -> .NET Framework 3.5 but i receive the same error
- I insert Windows 8 DVD in the D: Unit and i type in the prompt command this code:
Code: DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:sourcessxs
But I receive this error:
"Features Activation: 99.8%. Error: 2. Can't find the specified file"

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried using a batch file to run ccleaner at log on. But it always takes forever when it cleans Firefox. So I made a batch file to just delete the Firefox temp folder. And I unchecked Firefox in ccleaner so ccleaner ignores Firefox.
Here's the batch file.
Code: RMDIR 5bngz3ew.default /S /Q
I put it in the task scheduler. When I run it it says it cant find the file specified (0x80070002). I set the task to run with highest privileges. But every time I run it it gives that error. I don't know why its giving an error when it deletes the folder. So it works fine. I just want to know why its producing an error.

I don't know how I did it but I got both Windows 7 File Recovery and Windows 8 File History active at the same time. I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried searching it on Google but didn't find anything, the backup file created in XP and Win7 is saved with .bkf file extension,
I want to know the same for the file history in Windows 8, what's the extension or the files are simply saved in the same directory structure with same file extensions as originals,
I just got my new Win 8 computer and going crazy trying to get the thing set-up..I'm not tech savy at all. I looked on the internet and was really confused. I just have plain Win 8, no pro. View 9 Replies View RelatedI thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
I have windows 8.1 and cannot find system restore.The last windows update has changed some things on my computer and I would like to go back to an earlier date.I search for the restore,but only get my bookmarks file.The update has changed my zip files icon to a sheet of paper that I cannot open or extract. I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
I have an SSD as my main drive, with windows 8.1, but also an old installation of windows 8 on it. i can see it before booting, as i have the option to boot into either. i cannot though find where the useless 8 OS is installed, but im sure its taking up at least some space on the drive. where would this usually be?

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy company gave me a Windows 8 Enterprise product key, which I'm trying to use to upgrade a version of Windows I'm running. I visited this link -- Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Microsoft Windows Support, clicked the "Install Windows 8" button, ran the setup file that downloaded, and when prompted for the product key, entered it, only to see the message.
The product key cannot be used to install a retail version of Windows 8.
Is there another ISO I should be using? Ultimately I'm trying to get an ISO for use with my VMWare Fusion 6 install running on my Mac (10.9.1). I'm confident the product key given to me by my company is legit, but it obviously isn't a retail product key, probably some kind of corporate key or the equivalent.
I started up my computer and Windows explorer randomly froze up and hung. I didnt do anything to provoke it. I just sat here waiting for my computer to boot up.Then when I thought it was finished I opened firefox. Then Windows explorer just freezes completely. I tried doing windows key + r. It opened the run window but it froze. Then I tried moving my mouse on the right to open up the charm bar, ( I think it's called that) to hit settings and then restart. When I clicked settings the whole bar just closed out and would close out every time.
I right clicked on the task bar to try and open task manager. When I clicked on task manager it wouldn't ever open. So I couldn't even shut down properly. I just pushed the power button. Then I turned it on again and the same exact thing happened.So I shut it off again.
Then I turned it back on and went to msconfig before it froze up and I set it to boot into safe mode.Then I got into safe mode and ran a malware bytes scan and an avast scan. Nothing came up on either so I just went back to normal boot. The problem stopped now but I want to know what caused that whole thing to happen because it hasn't happened to me before.So I want to look at event viewer to see if that'll explain it. Where would I find that at in event viewer?
