I have an SSD as my main drive, with windows 8.1, but also an old installation of windows 8 on it. i can see it before booting, as i have the option to boot into either. i cannot though find where the useless 8 OS is installed, but im sure its taking up at least some space on the drive. where would this usually be?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had some major problems with Windows 8 recently, I'll start with the questions:
1. Does the Windows 8 installation disk do a quick format or a full format that deals with bad sectors before installing?
2. If Windows 8 tries to install files on a bad sector will it cause the installation to hang?
3. Related question: If Windows 8 tries to do updates on a bad sector, can it cause a system crash and BSODs?
4. Second related question: Are there any known issues with certain windows update files crashing systems (for Windows 8)? If so, which ones are crashing the systems?
I had a major crash with Windows 8.1 where after many fruitless attempts to salvage the system, I ended up reinstalling.
I did this about 3 or 4 times, and each time, things ended up with a crash, sometimes after 2 days, sometimes after 3.
I finally definitively figured out that Windows Update was causing the crash. Unfortunately, I still don't know which one did it. What I do know is that some updates went fine, others caused crashes.
After the last crash, Windows went into a repair loop that I couldn't get out of. It would try an automatic repair, fail, and reboot.
What's worse is that my computer would not recognize the rescue disk or the Windows install disk, and ultimately (30 or 40 minutes later), send things into yet another fruitless reboot.
I finally used Knoppix to zero out the drive, which allowed the Windows install disk to run, but when I tried to install, I had more adventures.
1. Windows tried to install, but it gave me an error and didn't install.
2. Windows then was unable to format the disk, either through the install disk or through DOS.
3. The partition was turned into a "Raw partition" and I wasn't even able to do a chkdsk.
I then used badblocks, and that allowed me to format the drive through the installation disk, but once again, the installation failed. Or let me put it this way, 8 hours after it started, it still was trying to install.
Then this morning, I formatted with the Windows install disk again, and miraculously everything installed in 30 minutes like it was supposed to.
When I get home tonight, I'm going to try to do a chkdsk to check for errors. I've also turned off Windows update since that has been causing all these problems.
For some reason Windows allows me to install Hotfixes that date back to August and even July! I know I installed those Hotfixes for a fact, but some recent updates reset all that. How to get the latest versions of everything at this point?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a powerful dedicated work machine that I want to also use as a play machine.
The idea: Have two separate installations of Windows 8.1 on two separate disks, select which disc to boot to at startup (preferably by dual boot menu, BIOS as a last resort).
I want to know if it's possible to isolate the two installations from one another. The only way I can think to do this is to disable the hard disks from within each independent OS.
For example:
If the "work side" of the computer uses 1x256GB SSD for Boot and 1x1TB SSD for data, and the "play side" has 1x512GB SSD, then from the "work side" OS I could disable the SSD in device manager for the 512GB SSD, and from the "play side" I could disable the 256GB & 1TB SSD's. In theory could I do this? Would that mean that essentially the data on either side would be completely invulnerable from the other side?
Step 2:
Dual boot? Single Boot with BIOS selection?
I cannot see Internet explorer in my installations in the control panel, I want to uninstall it because I never use it, and it just opens up randomly sometimes which really annoys myself. I did some research on this, and other people suggested to look in the "View installed updates" to find it, although even then I did not.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
I have windows 8.1 and cannot find system restore.The last windows update has changed some things on my computer and I would like to go back to an earlier date.I search for the restore,but only get my bookmarks file.The update has changed my zip files icon to a sheet of paper that I cannot open or extract. There is a system restore. I should add I have the classic shell not the original windows 8

View 8 Replies View RelatedI figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
Where can I find and set the file associations? Also, where do I set which application does what?
I need the right-click>Send To>Mail Recipient to go to the default mail client.

View 10 Replies View RelatedMy company gave me a Windows 8 Enterprise product key, which I'm trying to use to upgrade a version of Windows I'm running. I visited this link -- Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Microsoft Windows Support, clicked the "Install Windows 8" button, ran the setup file that downloaded, and when prompted for the product key, entered it, only to see the message.
The product key cannot be used to install a retail version of Windows 8.
Is there another ISO I should be using? Ultimately I'm trying to get an ISO for use with my VMWare Fusion 6 install running on my Mac (10.9.1). I'm confident the product key given to me by my company is legit, but it obviously isn't a retail product key, probably some kind of corporate key or the equivalent.
I started up my computer and Windows explorer randomly froze up and hung. I didnt do anything to provoke it. I just sat here waiting for my computer to boot up.Then when I thought it was finished I opened firefox. Then Windows explorer just freezes completely. I tried doing windows key + r. It opened the run window but it froze. Then I tried moving my mouse on the right to open up the charm bar, ( I think it's called that) to hit settings and then restart. When I clicked settings the whole bar just closed out and would close out every time.
I right clicked on the task bar to try and open task manager. When I clicked on task manager it wouldn't ever open. So I couldn't even shut down properly. I just pushed the power button. Then I turned it on again and the same exact thing happened.So I shut it off again.
Then I turned it back on and went to msconfig before it froze up and I set it to boot into safe mode.Then I got into safe mode and ran a malware bytes scan and an avast scan. Nothing came up on either so I just went back to normal boot. The problem stopped now but I want to know what caused that whole thing to happen because it hasn't happened to me before.So I want to look at event viewer to see if that'll explain it. Where would I find that at in event viewer?
on switching on on 13th March my laptop automatically updated windows.
since then any desktop shortcuts which pointed to a website now just bring up the google search screen.
this happens for both firefox and IE same thing happens if I use windows search and then select one of the options.

But when click on referesh from desktop context menu the files i have deleted show up again when i try to delete them again the files delete again and after 3 or 5 min the files are gone which i have deleted.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIt should be as easy as deleting the picture, but it's not... nothing is as easy as it should be in this train wreck. How do you delete an old account picture? I've tried just replacing it, but that turns into a whole puzzle you need to unravel first. If you pick the picture you want to replace, you would think that you would make it the big one of the 3, but you'd be wrong... that would make too much sense. If you hit browse and pick a new picture, the big one moves to the right and the new picture becomes the big one. Eventually you end up with 3 pictures and you get stuck in a sort of Rubic's Cube just trying to get the picture you want. This is some really bad software. Even the most die-hard M$ defenders have to know it, whether they want to admit it or not. So... how do you remove all the old pictures and only have the one you want.
