Windows 8.1 Update - Remove Totally Metro From OS?
Feb 7, 2014
Is it only me or do others experience a drastic slowdown of their PC after updating to 8.1? ever since I updated to 8.1 my laptop is slow and misbehaves in many and various ways.
It seems that the new update soon to be released is aimed at the metro users and if this is true then it is nothing short of infuriating.
My Desktop PC runs win 7 with classic shell and my laptop win 8.1 with classic shell. Any way to REMOVE totally metro from the OS? It keeps infringing whenever I open pictures etc.
Windows 8.1. I had an issue with the general user folder name, which was shown as "Alex_000". Although this was a cosmetic issue only, I wanted to change this to "Alex". I successfully managed this by changing about 50 entries in the registry (via regedit).
So fine so good. Now I found out that there are still some leftovers with "Alex_000" in the Windows system, although I have tried to find every bit and peace, where possible:
When I try to open "Add or Remove Programs" in the Metro surface, I get an error message:
Windows cannot find 'C:Usersalex_000...Classic_{a lot of weird chars}.settingscontent-ms'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
Somewhere in the system, there must still be links with Alex_000 existing. I tried searching the registry, tried a simple search on C: disc - no success.
In other words: Everything works fine - except of starting the apps from the metro surface for "remove software", or "user accounts", and maybe some other system apps, which I havenĀ“t discovered yet. If I do the same from the desktop, no problem - all these apps work well!
So where are the referring links for such system apps within the metro surface stored? Obviously not in the registry... How/where can i find these orphaned links for the said apps in Metro?
Basically about 1 month ago a good friend of mine purchased a brand new acer desktop computer, I haven't got the exact model to hand as he lives 200 kilometers from me and he's not tech savvy at all, however, from what I remember of it, it's windows 8 x64, 4gb ram and i3 processor, so not bad at all.
When he got it I set it up for him as in just put in the regional setting etc.. and ran through the initial set up and all went well. I installed all his programs and all was good.
So about a month on he rang me and said his computer is just freezing randomly always when it's left idle for 10 minutes or so and this happens all day every day.
..... Ran hitman pro which said all was clean. .....Ran chkdsk /f which was fine .....Went into power options and set both screen and sleep to never ....Ran sfc /scannow which said it found some corrupt file but could not fix all (ran this from command prompt from inside windows as admin) ...Tried a system restore to the 14th of this month but said it couldn't do it as it may be corrupt but it let do a restore to a later date but still the same issue.
This is only a new pc, so if I can't sort the problem rather than doing a fresh install and checking all the hardware internally I'm wondering if he should bring it back to the shop as it's only a month old, or would I be better of doing the fresh install ?
Can i remove this Metro thing? I deleted every tab i didnt need on it and it left me with a blank screen? Why cant it just integrate with the desktop similar to the side widget thing but faster? That way I can still have my start menu but then have live tiles on the desktop.
Anyway how do i remove metro and put my start bar back??? As I can't access any of my newly installed programs without going to Computer>C:Pogram Data> then the program folder and finding the actual exe...
I want to totally bypass all password logins. I deactivated the password requirement after sleep but this does not solve the bootup problem. Whenever I boot into win 8 it requires a password to login. I don't want it. I want to switch on my laptop and go straight into windows.
I have a friend who has been hijacked through phone and being gullible. The PC was totally locked out and my password cracker failed to make headway. She has agreed to re-install, but her supplier did not give her a product key with her system disk and paperwork, consequentially, disk cannot proceed.
Is there a way for me to install with her disk with a temp product key? Also, if we re-install this way, would she be charged for not having it through no fault of her own?
Okay, so I just recently installed my Windows 8.1 Update 1 OS to my PC. It's been going great, most of my favorite apps and games installed and worked perfectly. But I've been getting this bug rather frequently, but don't know from where it all begins.
The OS functions normally at first, but then after I switch from a few metro apps to the desktop, and then back, I lose all control with corner functions. What I mean to say is, the task switcher charms, or the charms bar, or the start button or actually even the ability to close the app by pushing it down... nothing seems to work. The app functions normally and I can use my keyboard to Alt+Tab out of the mess, but this keeps happening.
Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.
Note: c: est contains my offline image.
Code: dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
[Code] .....
To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":
Whenever I open a Metro app like Weather, even after closing it using the red cross in the upper right corner (feature added in 8.1 Update), the app will keep running in the background forcing me to end it with Task Manager. Is this normal?
Is it possible to update the apps I already have installed from store?in windows 8 on store icon was showing the number of updates.in win 8.1 this doesnt work.
IE Metro tile is missing from my metro start screen. It's not in the 'all apps' list either. when I go to program default, it is set as the default browser. I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.
I recently tried the "sfc /scannow" command. It said it fixed corruptions and after a restart a "Windows 8.1 Pro" watermark showed. I tried to remove it using the My_WCP_Watermark_Editor.exe app. However, it gave me errors in various Modern Apps like the Windows Store app wherein it would crash whenever I type something in the search bar. I did the "sfc /scannow" command again and it fixed the Modern Apps errors but the watermark appeared again. How to remove this watermark it is very annoying. Don't tell me to activate my Windows because it is already activated. I can use the Personalization settings in the start screen.
It added the "Test Mode" and the "Build 9600" because I accidentally clicked the apply settings the first time opening the app. There must be some way to remove the annoying watermark...
In windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.
win 8 won't let me no matter what I try to do to remove folders from the Windows 8 install. Old install folder. I can't remove the regedit file from it. I think I have to boot Linux and mount a drive to do what I need.
What can I do to fix this besides linux. Format and go back to windows 7?
I install the windows 8 Pro 64-bit upgrade over my windows 7 home 64-bit last week. Everything works fine. My Boot drive is a 180GB SSD, so not a lot of room. So I would like to remove any old windows 7 stuff that Windows 8 might have backed up on the Boot drive. Anyway to find the old windows 7 stuff and how could I delete them?
Heres the deal im trying to not shutdown my pc anymore or restart it as below screenshot i would like to remove those options (only those) where to edit the registry or any other file file to remove them (below screenshot : Remove Restart and shutdown).
I just upgraded my legal copy of Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I've also installed all the currently available updates. The problem I'm faced now is the watermark on my wallpaper near the clock (Bottom-right side of the desktop). It currently says: "Windows 8.1 SecureBoot isn't configured corrently Build 9600" .
I have to admit, I have disabled secure boot. I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about this in these forums, but let's just say I have another OS installed an my PC (I use GRUB to load the two Operating Systems)...
I have a problem with my Windows 8 start menu. I need to get rid of this game entry that I uninstalled.I have removed the program (Touch Pack for Windows 7) and its gone, but this remains. Is there like a registry key I could delete?
I cannot find it in my start menu folder. I can't do anything from my Games Explorer directory.
So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.
Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.
But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:
If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)
So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:
I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?
I have HP pavilion G6 laptop running windows 8.1. Found under c:windows emp a folder with a very long alphanumeric "name". On opening this appears to be an OS installation i.e. it has the following files included:
Program Files Program Files (x86) Program data Sources Users Windows
Being in the temp folder I presume can be deleted. However I cannot delete this folder. I get the message that says I require permission from the trusted installer (??) to make changes to this folder.
I've got a Samsung Ativ 500 and I am returning it so I am doing the normal "Remove Everything and Reinstall Windows" but shortly after I click the "Get Started" button and the the "Next" button I get an error message stating "Insert Media" "Some files are missing. Your Windows Installation or recovery media will provide these files."
When I first started this job I was the first user on a new PC with Windows 8. I was asked to set up a Skype account which I did by creating a new Windows Live e-mail since I didn't want to use my personal one for business. I had continual problems with some conflict (I never found but believe it was caused by Skydrive) that caused my Live account to continuously need a password reset. After much frustration I set up a Skype direct account and closed the Live account.
Today I tried to go into the Windows Store to download an app and it's still asking me to log-in with the old, closed Live account. I have literally been sitting here for an hour and a half trying to find a way to log-in to the store with a different user and e-mail. There is nothing. I tried Microsoft live chat support which was really no support at all. I printed out and tried the instructions I found on this site for signing in with a different Microsoft account but it doesn't work as nowhere am I given the option on the screen to sign in with a different account. It shows my Live account with no option to change to another and a password box with the message that too many attempts were made to log-in blah blah blah reset the password. But, the account is closed so this is impossible to do (yes, I even tried that method but it tells me my account is closed).
Microsoft's instructions to do this by managing user accounts does not work as there is no user account on this PC associated with that e-mail address. I log in daily with a local administrator account and the only other account is Guest. I log in to Skype with a Skype (not Live) account. I log into Outlook e-mail with a business/local e-mail account. The Skydrive account is also no longer used as we switched to Dropbox.
I tried doing the instructions to clear the Windows Store cache (run>wsreset.exe) but that did nothing to remove this account.
Any information about how to remove an e-mail account associated with the store, that is no longer a valid/open e-mail account.
