When I try accessing "Advanced speech properties" to troubleshoot, I receive the following error "could not initialize volume meter. Please select a different audio input device".
Then the "Speech Properties" dialog box pops up and when I click "Advanced" and select the audio input device, the "Speech Properties" dialog box freezes every time when I try to hit "Apply".
Running Windows 8.1 x64
"Speech recognition could not start because the language configuration is not supported" . That's the message I get when I try to open the speech recognition program.
Well I am greek and my windows are in greek version as well. As I understood from this message the greek ver. of Win 8 doesnt support speech recognition...

View 3 Replies View RelatedWe got a new computer in the office and it is running Windows 8.1. We also have 2 older computers and they are running win XP. I have them all networked together and everybody can see and edit all files on any computer. So far so good. Here is the problem: MS Access will not open any database files. I get the attached popup. The file is not outside my intranet. It resides in a subfolder of "Documents". The folder is called "Data Base Files". As I said, the file can be seen by anu user, but can only be opened in the Windows 8.1 machine, where it resides. Q: how can I open the file on the XP machines? Of cause they all have Access installed. How do I get around the popup?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently purchased a Skype number and I have a few emails telling me that I have a new voice message and I should sign into Skype to listen to them.
So I signed into the metro style Skype app on windows 8.1 but could not find voice messages. I tried on the surface rt app but no option for voice messages. I tried logging into the Skype website and again could not find my messages.
So how does one listen to their voice messages in Skype?
I wonder if there's a way to make my own voice audible in the speakers/headphones when using a microphone?
I also have RealTek HD Audiomanager installed, since I have an ASUS board.
Could this be done in Windows?
I can access all my browsers but things like Skype and Steam won't open I was having a problem with a program yesterday that unpacked in the temp folder incorrectly and I have been trying to fix that since then I had to work yesterday or I would have resorted to something like this much sooner I am told that my hard drive needs repaired when I try to do a system restore on it to before I had the problem but I do scan and repair and it does nothing I have done scan and repair several times and right now I am using avast for my virus protection and I turned off my firewalls so those aren't a problem I am running a scan with avast right now for the full system but I'm not positive if it will bring up the error so that I can fix it I don't have a restore disk it didn't come with one when I got it and it is set to only do a refresh or recovery with a restore disk after I sent it to the company for a problem that it would randomly shut off when not plugged in and was fully charged I
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of folders that are shared from external hard drives, connected to my new windows 8 machine.
Other computers/phones/tablets at home on the same network can access folders from the internal HD on my main computer.
But, with shared folders from external hard drives - despite showing up while accessing the network cannot be opened or read from connected devices or other computers on the network.
I'm a relative amateur when it comes to networking but I did not have this issue with my older windows 7 home computer.
When I use headphones with my Surface Pro (Win 8) I cant hear the voices in my videos - the background music/sound effects are just too loud. I have tried using the Win 8 Video player as well as VLC Player and I still get the same issue.
I have tried the headphones on my iPhone and have no problems. It has been a long time since i've used a Windows computer (usually have a Mac)
Yesterday I had to download WinRAR to be able to open up some files and during the setup it only asked me once if I wanted to download a toolbar. I said no... but after I closed the setup and opened Internet Explorer, this "Internet Search" tool bar is here and I can't remove it! It's annoying because I can't click a link that opens up a new tab but instead of going to the link it goes to this "Internet Search".... I tried removing it from my Add-Ons but that didn't seem to work either.

How to get rid of it?
I hardly ever turn off my computer, I just put it to sleep. But once a week I turn it off and I did last night. When I turned it on this a.m. My Internet Explorer had AVG secure toolbar and search. I do not want it, I did not ask for it and I cannot remove it.
There should be a law against people putting stuff on your computer that you can't remove. I called Microsoft and they told me I had to pay to get rid of it. I will not, nor can I pay. I'm on Social Security. This is BS.
How to get rid of it. And where did my Microsoft Security Essentials go? Now it's missing from my computer
I have searched all the keywords I can think of & I can't seem to find this problem addressed anywhere. The type on my address toolbar in the taskbar is very faded. Almost like it's grayed out, but not quite. I had it do this when I first installed Win 8.1, messed with some settings, but none that seemed to make any sense & it went away. Now it's back & I haven't done any setting changes!

I accidently added the "Yahoo Toolbar" to my MIE-11.
I followed the standard instructions for removal.
I went to "Tools" then "Manage Add Ons".
The list of Add Ons appeared. When I click any other Add On in the list the "disable" button lights up.
When I click on "Yahoo Toolbar" the "disable" button does not light up so I am unable to get rid of the toolbar.
While on MIE11, I tried clicking on the "X" at the left side of the Yahoo Toolbar. Two choices appear :
(1) Hide Yahoo Toolbar temporarily
(2) Disable Yahoo Toolbar permanently.
I can Hide the toolbar but when I click on the option to permanently disable the toolbar I get a message that says "This action is restricted. Contact your system administrator".
Went to control panel uninstall software , couldn't find Yahoo Toolbar on the list !!!!

Although I don't really miss the Classical start Menu any more It's quite useful to have a quick popup of some programs you use from time to time that don't always warrant being either pinned to the desktop or the taskbar also with SUB MENUS where appropriate -- All the tools like WIN-X editor that I've seen don't allow sub menuing or need fixed location toolbars or folders so here's an EASY way to do it - although it's manual so perhaps knowlegable people with some programming skills who know some scripting could easily automate the process.
An Easy way to do this actually exists in WINDOWS itself by the use of a bit of trickery and Custom toolbars -- you don't NEED any Registry hacks etc. Also you can save your created toolbar so you don't need to re-create it or go through the whole process again if you re-install Windows again either.
Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder - Windows 7 Forums Toolbars - How to Use in Windows 7 and Vista - Windows 7 Forums
1) Create a Folder anywhere on your system say on Vol D: and call it My Progs.
2) Create a Custom toolbar (right mouse click on bottom taskbar==>toolbars==>new toolbar
3) Select the folder location to the one you've made D:My Progs.
Now the trick is to POPULATE this folder correctly.
For Items that don't have any sub menus - for example on my system I'll take Winamp. You need to find the FILE LOCATION - easy way to do this is to search in the applications and then RIGHT MOUSE CLICK on the .exe file and then SEND TO DESKTOP (create Short cut).
Now on the DESKTOP RIGHT MOUSE CLICK on the icon and choose COPY.
Go to your folder D:My Progs, chose Paste Short cut. Then delete the desktop icon if you don't want it on your desktop.
Now if you want SUB levels - create a Folder in the My Progs folder and then simply copy the procedure above.
You can do this for as many levels as you want.
For the TOP level items say Office Create a Folder Microsoft Office. As an example I've also added one Classic Games.
If the link is ALREADY a short cut then just past direct into the My Prog folder - you don't need to create a short cut first.
Finally re-arrange it so it appears on the screen at the most convenient place for you.
"Seemples" -- Bye Bye Startisback or any of those 3rd party apps -- I think my method is far more flexible and you can have ANY number of toolbars too.
I've shown two screen shots here with a small test toolbar - Office and Classic Games have lower levels and the other one is the example My Dir containing ONLY short cuts and folders.
Unchecking it in the toolbar of the task band remove the icon only till next reboot(!)

I've been through all the Classic Shell options (I think!) and messed around with Windows Explorer, but after installing 8.1 the toolbar seems to have disappeared.
I used to have all the View buttons pinned to the bar and I'm really missing it. I know they can be put in the Quick Access Bar, but it's not as usable/fast as the Classic Shell version (the change as hovering I also find very annoying).
EDIT: Just realise I hadn't checked the version I was using. It's 4.0.4 and re-checking the developers site I've now realised that they're up to 4.0.6 ------ Could this be the issue?

I have started to use NetSpeedMonitor to monitor network speed and bandwidth usage and when it is set to start at boot, it asks to enable its toolbar on a taskbar. Obviously I would prefer, if I would not have to confirm it at every startup.
I currently have it set like this and I wonder, if there is a command like: "/allow":
Code:

I just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 installed on it. I have one problem. I know if you hit one of the corners of the screen the right toolbar becomes activated and is displayed. My problem is that it tends to be displayed when I move the cursor in the middle of the screen. When it is displayed I have to deactivate it in order to continue what I was doing. I do not mind the toolbar if it is not so sensitive.
