Jul 7, 2013Are the Accessories gone in Windows 8? I tried to find the calculator and recorder, but have they been discontinued? If so, any replacements?

Since i always use my trusty mic headset i click play on the message and it said no playback device detected and I tried fixing it within game options but it didn't work! and my browser doesn't either. I tried to record my voice but mic wasn't detected?! and my screen recorder catches it perfectly fine and i can hear my self in the video. Whats happening?!. I tried everything from changing default mic option and other things but it wont work and this happened when i first got this pc up here but I tried this time.

Has Windows Accessories been dropped from Win 8.1?
Voice Recognition command to access or open a toolbar? I've tried "click + toolbar name" "open + toolbar name" "press + toolbar name"
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter 23 Windows updates were installed a few days ago (to Windows 8.1 PC) I noticed a couple of things
1. Most of the 3rd party programs I had added to start screen had disappeared
2. Most of the Windows Accessories had disappeared from 'Apps' screen under 'Windows Accessories' (this affected all users on the PC). See screenshot (only Notepad remaining).
I found that most of the 3rd party programs were still installed, so just re-did 'pin to start' on those.
I checked one of missing accessories, Snipping Tool, and the exe file still exists in Windows/System32 folder. I tried creating a shortcut and copying to Start Menu/Programs folder, but then appears under 'S' rather than Windows Accessories!
Unfortunately I don't have a restore point that I can go back to and don't want to 'refresh' Windows install (as would lose installed 3rd party applications).
How I can restore Windows Accessories (or has experienced similar issue after updates)?
I just recently purchased a Skype number and I have a few emails telling me that I have a new voice message and I should sign into Skype to listen to them.
So I signed into the metro style Skype app on windows 8.1 but could not find voice messages. I tried on the surface rt app but no option for voice messages. I tried logging into the Skype website and again could not find my messages.
So how does one listen to their voice messages in Skype?
I wonder if there's a way to make my own voice audible in the speakers/headphones when using a microphone?
I also have RealTek HD Audiomanager installed, since I have an ASUS board.
Could this be done in Windows?
When I bring up the calculator can I set it to stay on top of all the other open windows even if the focus is not on it? So I can see my result. I have Win 8.1

After running sfc /scannow some time ago, it found file corruption and eventually I found that the corrupted files were Snipping Tool files and one Calculator file getting corrupted in 8.1 by viewing the sfcdetails.txt file (attached). When I run the sfc command every few days, I find that Snipping Tool files are corrupted again. This started after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1. This is very strange. What would cause only a Calculator file and usually Snipping Tool files to keep getting corrupted when there are so many other system files?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Windows 8.1 and recently I took a look at my Resource Monitor and noticed a process called numbers.exe with the description "Numbers". It showed it as running in the background but in a suspended state. As I've never seen that process before, I decided to search it up and it came up with some results related to a trojan / rootkit. But this trojan / rootkit was namely referred to as <random numbers>.exe (for example 123456789.exe); nothing indicating specifically the process "numbers.exe".
I did a bit of digging in the associated handles and noticed that some of the files were related to the default Windows Calculator App, which I have currently pinned to my Start. When I unpinned it from the Start the process was gone. so I'm assuming it is the process for the calculator. But because of a trojan incident I had a few years back, I'm a bit paranoid based of the searches that popped up for numbers.exe. So this "numbers.exe" is a legitimate process? Who also has the default calculator pinned to their start have this process running as "suspended"?
I am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.
I am using Windows 8.1 pre-installed on a new laptop used mostly for business, and use a mouse, keyboard and graphics tablet. I find that frequently a "Windows Accessories" app Windows Journal for note-taking and handwriting conversion opens a new file for no apparent reason. I have had as many as 20 empty windows start) and want to disable this but can't find away to.
When showing apps as tiles, there is no "uninstall" option for Windows category items (Accessories, Ease of Access, system) as far as I can see.
In Control Panel / Programs & Features/ there is no Windows Accessories Item.
In the Settings/PC settings/Search and Apps/App sizes only a couple of these "Accessories" are shown (e.g. Calculator and sound Recorder) but most others including Journal aren't.
Is there any other way to disable or remove this app?
When I use headphones with my Surface Pro (Win 8) I cant hear the voices in my videos - the background music/sound effects are just too loud. I have tried using the Win 8 Video player as well as VLC Player and I still get the same issue.
I have tried the headphones on my iPhone and have no problems. It has been a long time since i've used a Windows computer (usually have a Mac)
