Feb 7, 2014I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and recently I took a look at my Resource Monitor and noticed a process called numbers.exe with the description "Numbers". It showed it as running in the background but in a suspended state. As I've never seen that process before, I decided to search it up and it came up with some results related to a trojan / rootkit. But this trojan / rootkit was namely referred to as <random numbers>.exe (for example 123456789.exe); nothing indicating specifically the process "numbers.exe".
I did a bit of digging in the associated handles and noticed that some of the files were related to the default Windows Calculator App, which I have currently pinned to my Start. When I unpinned it from the Start the process was gone. so I'm assuming it is the process for the calculator. But because of a trojan incident I had a few years back, I'm a bit paranoid based of the searches that popped up for numbers.exe. So this "numbers.exe" is a legitimate process? Who also has the default calculator pinned to their start have this process running as "suspended"?

Nov 12, 2013I am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.

When I run the sfc command every few days, I find that Snipping Tool files are corrupted again. This started after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1. This is very strange. What would cause only a Calculator file and usually Snipping Tool files to keep getting corrupted when there are so many other system files?

May 6, 2013Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

Jul 2, 2013In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.
Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?
If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?
All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.

While logged in using one of the admin user accounts or the local account, I can access the store app. However, when i log in using the other administrator account and try to access the store app, i just get the spinning circle and nothing happens. I have tried reinstalling my codecs and different codecs like sharks, klite etc. I have reinstalled my graphic drivers. I have tried add/remove features, but no look. Its the same with wmc. I can play videos with quicktime. I was going to try a refresh, but I have way to many programs to reinstall, and a Windows 8 inplace upgrade doesn't offer to keep my apps & settings.

Jan 9, 2014I have tried with a new harddisk, took out my graphics card, checked my memory, they all seemed fine. My computer always run into a quick BSOD during the first boot and I am unable to see the error message and it restarts back to BIOS followed by a successful boot into windows on the second try. Occasionally, on the second try, it would go into windows repair and say that windows did not start up correctly etc. Normally, once it gets into windows, it would be ok. I did have once that I got a BSOD in windows.
Another interesting point to note is I can circumvent the cold boot crash issue by going to BIOS immediately on boot and exit it. This way, it would normally boot into windows without issues.
I suspect this is due to the on board network card but I cannot be sure. This computer is only 1 week old and I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting it. I have tried uninstalling, cleaning and re-installing the latest network drive.
Note that the cold boot crash issue does not always generate a mini dump file.
