I have many virtual machines in my VMWare Workstation install on Windows 7. I have now let Windows 8.1 lose on the bare metal of this machine as a dual booting system. I have enabled Hyper V on 8.1 to "play around with it and when I went to install VMWare the installer quit stating Workstation could not be installed with Hyper V installed. I don't have to know about Hyper V was just going to play around with it but VMWare will always be my main virtual platform.

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... General access denied error... (0x80070005)" (for details, check my attached image).

I need to install Hyper-V, to run Windows Phone 8 emulator on my machine. But I am(actually my system) not able to complete the installation process.
When I enable Hyper-V in the window, it asks for a restart. After restart, during logon screen, it shows Updating. At around 91-95%, system shows "We couldn't complete the features. Restarting." And system rolls back. I want to really use WP8 emulator.
Also my system meets all the necessary system requirements for Hyper-V, already checked via CoreInfo, and Virtualization is ON in BIOS.

I enabled Hyper-V on my computer. When it restared I saw it was configuring Hyper-V. I didn't opened Hyper-V the same day. Two days later, I wont to open Hyper-V but I can't find it anywhere! Also, it isn't listed in programs anymore... I also enabled virtualisation in the BIOS.

I've installed Win Pro 8.1 on a new desktop and added the Hyper-V feature. Checking the bios shows Virtualization is enabled, and I contacted intel about the processor who verified it supports virtualization (dell said it doesn't). I can start the VM manager, create an Internal Lan Switch and go through the steps to create a new VM machine. When I click on Connect the VM window opens, then I start it. At that point the VM screen says "Connecting to Vm1. It cycles through for a while then shows an message " it couldn't start try again if this persists contact your system admin" (paraphrasing). What I find more odd is the bottom pane that opens in the VM manager when I connect to the VM shows the VMs state(?) and the image loads with a login screen.
One other thing, when I try to stop the virtual machine in the Manager it says stopping but never really does it hangs up. The manager is responsive but no commands seem to execute. I then go to Services in msc and stop it and it says stopping the service and hangs there with the service grayed out and not able to select start, stop, refresh etc.

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro where I have installed the Hyper-V manager and so on. I have made a virtual external switch and a virtual machine with Server 2012 on it. It connects fine to the switch. The Hyper-V makes a virtual bridge and all seems fine. But the guest does'nt get an IP adresse, and can't connect to the internet/LAN.
I have made the exact same setup on my laptop connected to Ethernet and there is no problem at all.
Does the Surface Pro Wireless have a problem with Hyper-v ?

In Windows 8 Pro I have created a virtual machine using Win XPSP3. I've tried everything I can to get an internet connection for my VM. I'm not on a network so I've created an external virtual switch. I've tried using both the legacy adapter and a network adapter. I've tried changing the IP address -even tried a DNS address but the best I've achieved so far is "limited or no Connectivity". I also tried Win 7 Home Premium VM with the same result - no internet connection. The virtual manager should set this up automatically

I have to run a few programs only available on linux.
As seen on almost all the sources I visited, I installed VirtualBox and downloaded the last Ubuntu "iso" file. after having installed the new OS on virtualbox, I tried launching it and got the very often found "VT-x is disabled in the BIOS" error.
The solution also given in all the sources I visited is "enable Hyper-V" in the "windows features turn on or off" menu. Problem is : I can't find this option (I even looked in the least probable sub directories, just in case)
I found out this feature was only available for "Pro" versions of windows 8/8.1.
My question is : Is it feasible for me to run a virtual machine, or even run a machine on dual boot on my default-installed-windows 8 machine? I don't have the money to buy the pro package (which, for some reason, is MUCH more expensive than the "previous windows to 8.1 pro" update).
My hardware is more than sufficient: 64bits i7-4700HQ processor, 8Gb RAM DDR3l

All my docs have suddenly been duplicated. The duplicate files have been renamed with the machine name (Peters_Laptop). I cannot open the original files and get a message "1 Interrupted Action" An unexpected message is keeping you from copying the file. Error code 0x80070490 Element not found.
This has applied to ALL of my documents.
I have tried to delete all the useless files and rename the changed versions back to the original names. But after a reboot, the duplicates are back!
I am running Win 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron Laptop. Is this related to SkyDrive?

Host OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on SSD system disk. PC Specs: Intel Core i7 3770K on ASRock Z77 OC Formula with 16GB DDR3, GTX470 VirtualBox version: 4.3.12 r93733 with Extension Pack 4.3.12 r93733.
I've had a Windows 8.1 Pro x64 VM running on VBox 4.3 for a few days now with no issues at all.
However, this morning, the VM refused to boot saying VT-x was not enabled.
I checked via the VM settings but the whole "Acceleration" pane was disabled and not accessible. I was not able to resolve the issue even after rebooting my PC and explicitly enabling Intel Virtualization in the PC BIOS (it was on AUTO before - I set it to ENABLE).
I have since several times removed the VM completely and attempted to reinstall.
Every time, the VM hangs on the Windows 8 logo screen on install and then crashes with the Error 0x000000C4.
As found on VirtualBox community forums and on other sites, I have tried the SETEXTRADATA command via command prompt running as administrator, and have confirmed that the .vbox file has been changed and the string ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B" value="1" appended in the <ExtraData> section.
However the VM still refuses to boot or reinstall. I have Ubuntu, Fedora and ZorinOS VM's all working perfectly.
The only change to my system that took place in the interim was that I installed Comodo Free Firewall last night. Seeing the problems I have been having with the VM since this morning, I uninstalled Comodo and rebooted thinking it might have something to do with my problems, but still no joy.
I am also uploading my .VBOX files before and after to show the changes that have been made by the SETEXTRADATA command.

I wanted to play around with Android some and I got this problem when i try to first open up the Android virtual session. I'm not all that familiar with the BIOS. I know how to navigate the BIOS, how to get to the BIOS, and I know it can mess you up badly if you do the wrong thing! (i.e. BIOS drivers)

While trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."
The CBS.log file is too large to upload to here or paste into pastebin, so here is a dropbox upload of it:
What other way, aside from a repair install, do I have to fix my missing files and services?
Specs:
Processor: Intel i5 2500k @ 3.3GHz
OS Name: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Preview with Media Center
Motherboard: Z68A-D3H-83
Installed Physical Memory: 8.00GB

I have two different Microsoft accounts on my Windows 8 machine, which is a laptop. One of them is an account I got from my ISP and has been in use for years but that one is disappearing in a few days (I think) because I cancelled my account with my ISP. The other account is one I created within the last couple of weeks.
In transitioning to the new account, I'm finding it considerably more work than I expected and wonder if I am ignorant of some easier ways of doing things. For instance, I was surprised that the applications installed under the older account aren't visible under the new accounts. Is there an easy way to make them visible or do I really need to reinstall the same applications under the new account from scratch? For example, let's say I have a game like Taptiles on the old account and want it visible under the new account: do I really need to do a fresh install under the new account? Or is there an easier way to be able to play Taptiles from the copy I originally installed under the original account?
Also, what is the easiest way to pass data back and forth between the two accounts? I did a copy within a file on the original account and switched to the second account to paste that information in and was disappointed to find that it was not possible. I ended up sending an email to myself then copied from the email on the newer account. It struck me that there must be a better way but I'm not sure what that would be.
Also, with respect to XBox, some of the XBox games had accumulated fairly substantial scores as a result of playing the daily challenges. Is there any way to roll the scores from the old account into the new account, even though they have different "gamer tags" (the ID by which I am known when I play TapTiles or Mahjong or whatever)?

've always been a Mac user, and now I'm thinking of switching to a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 8
I don't do a lot of heavy gaming but I do play Minecraft. I looked at the specs of that laptop, it was Core i5 processor at 1.8/2.7 GHz 4gb ram and nvidia GeForce graphics card dedicated with 2gb. Will these specs be enough to run Minecraft without any lag? Also, why did it say 1.8/2.7 GHz? Which one is it?

I have an SSD machine with 90 Gbytes of storage running at home, not connected to server. I use a USB drive for extra capacity but I seldom have much spare space on C: as I have SQL server and Visual Studio installed. Looking at storage use on C: I notice 1.7 Gbytes of files in C:UsersSimonAppDataRoaming. Can I delete these as I use my login on only one computer at home? Roaming profiles are not enabled.
There are also 1.9 GBytes of files on C:UsersAll Users. I believe All Users is used for creating profiles for new users and All Users contains folders corresponding to those in C:Programs and C:Programs (x86). Can I delete any folders with programs that wouldn't be needed by any new accounts I might create?

I've noticed sometimes when I first powerup my windows 8 machine, it turns on, but I get no display on my monitor (has happened with 2 monitors). I am using the latest beta ATI drivers for my card. The weird thing is, pressing delete i dont even get the bios to appear, just a black/dark monitor screen. I am wondering if repairing the bootloader could fix this? How to repair the bootloader? I won't loose any of my data, will I?
After turning off, turning on the computer a few times, I finally get display and can get into windows 8, but it's annoying.
MB is an ASUS P8z68V/gen3

I've been having an issue with my Acer S7-391. I bought the Windows 8 machine in December, and the majority of the time when I start it up in the morning, it doesn't boot properly - it hangs on a black screen for ages. I then have to hit the off button and boot it back up again and, sometimes, it boots after having to go through a system repair. Also, sometimes it does boot properly from the get-go without having to jump through hoops - not often though.
Originally I thought it was an issue with me having upgraded to Windows 8.1 shortly after buying the laptop, but having rolled the machine back to Windows 8, the issue prevailed. Through trial and error, though, I've figured out when it does and when it doesn't boot properly (yeah, I'm slow). Basically, it never boots properly when I have a USB mouse/keyboard plugged in. I take them out, boot the machine, and can plug them in again almost immediately and everything works fine. But NEVER does it boot with these devices plugged in from the start.
Here's a photo of it anyway (below).
Any solution here - other than unplugging my USB peripherals on boot - t'

I am using Windows Virtual PC which was a 64-Bit version I installed, I got XP Home 32-Bit installed via it perfectly and tried to install Windows 8 x64 AND THEN Windows 8.1 x64 but on both I got the BSOD (in the Virtual Machine) almost straight away saying 64-bit CPU is not supported?
I've read this may be due to not having VTx but I do as my CPU is a 3470 (Ivy Bridge) and SIW says its enabled as does BIOS
I am testing some Windows ISO's to check to make sure they are OEM and ask for product key during install but also to diagnose a WSUS Offline issue in windows 8 that reverses all updates right at the end saying there was a problem, the software creator needs a log and I ain't got time at work.
