Aug 19, 2014I am currently running Windows 8.1 (Pro), also I am up-to-date with Windows Updates. Sometimes, when I open File Explorer (a.k.a. Windows Explorer), like "This PC". It says "This folder is empty", it then starts some-kind of searching, also icons on the left are animated like "searching". There is another one, it also takes time to sort files/folders orders, for example when I am in C:New Folder and there are 5 folders and 5 files inside, none big sized at all. When I click on "Name" it then takes time to reorder the view.
Another thing is while I experienced these issues, I found another one that is. View>Layout sometimes gets disabled and I can't change the view. View>Options button behaves the same.

Jan 21, 2013I just purchased a new HP laptop and it has Windows 8 I am a police officer and have access to a program called Coplink normally on other computers I would just type coplink.chattanooga.gov/ in the webpage bar at the top of IE and when hitting enter it downloads it and saves it to desktop then I can just click it anytime and login but it doesnt do that on my new computer I guess because its Windows 8 I cannot get it to save and load it looks like teh file is .JNLP

Apr 28, 2013Some programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

Whenever I search in Google I get the local google.rs, and a little box pops up on the right giving me an option to "Switch to English".
Now, I work from home, so I'm online all day and I search on Google quite a lot. I do not want to change my search engine, if I can fix the problem.
The problem is that I do not want it to keep redirecting to the local .rs google search engine, and then ask me every time if I want to switch to English or keep the local language. It's annoying, it wastes my time, and I've noticed that a lot of times if I change it to English it actually displays different results than it does if I let it search with the local .rs google search engine.
Any way to change this gestapo setting and make it Always search the English search engine?
Windows 8.1 X64 - Microsoft Account Messing Up Localization Preferences
Sep 15, 2014I've got a very annoying problem with Windows 8.1 x64 . Ever since the 8.1 update Micorosoft has been pushing logging in via Microsoft Account rather than a local account. Though the Micrsosoft account provides some benefits (copy desktop, OneDrive etc) it also has some pitfalls
My problem is with the languange preferences / keyboard layout :
I've got 3 systems which are US international keyboard and 1 system with an UK keyboard. All systems boot with US int. keyboard, when on the laptop i change to UK, all systems boot with UK. When then I change with both languages installed to US again, next reboot the laptop defaults to US.
Though I like synchronizing accounts, keyboard lay-out should be able to be opted out and be a local setting. I can't make it work properly with JUST UK on the laptop and US int on the other 3 systems.

Dec 9, 2012What I am trying to do is sort my favorites for the IE10 app. So far there seems to be no way to manually arrange the favorites so what I tried to do was change the sort in the favorites folder under C/USERS/myname etc. I was going to add a 1 to the detail tab in the file properties but I get an error message reading "You need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file." If I select continue the message reads "You need permission to perform this action" "You require permission from MEMe to make changes to this file"
I am the only user and set up as the system administrator. I have tried completely disabling UAC and installed "Take Ownsership" Nothing has allowed me to do this. Now my problem is there is no reason why I can't add a 1 to the detail description to a file for sorting. What harm could possibly come from editing that field. Most importantly, if I am the system administrator why am I fighting for permission from myself?

Jun 1, 2013I mistakenly deleted the contents of a user's account folder and was unable to replace the sub-folders manually or by pasting empty ones from another account. If I try to use the account to save files, I just get an error message saying that the folder xxx or file path doesn't exist, depending on where I am trying to save them. This is not just a long filename error and I am afraid that I have caused problems for the user that would affect any Windows 8 account he opens in future, because of Microsoft syncing.

Nothing happens when I click or double click on the user account icon in the control panel.
I then went to check if our other pc was the same but that's fine.
I did notice that on mine instead of an icon of two people the icon is that of a folder.
I have tried accessing it through "Godmode" and it says it can't find it and also all the icons for user tasks are a blank piece of paper.
Accounts :: New User Cannot Login (user Profile Service Failed)
Jun 3, 2014I am trying to add a second account to my machine and whether I try a Local or Microsoft account, I get the same "User Profile Service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded" error every time I try to sign in for the first time. I've Googled this a bit and it seems everything I've found yet (except one) has been with logging in to existing profiles. For the one that was with a new profile, the solution didn't work.
I tried deleting all files similar to the specified one (file in C:UsersDefaultAppDataLocalMicrosoftVSCommon12.0SQM with name of "sqmdata-####-###-#####.sqm"), but that had no effect. I'm guessing this is because I have VS2013 installed, as this happens with my laptop as well. I don't want to delete my profile, I have important (and large) data in my documents folder that I don't want to lose. I'm guessing this will have to do with messing with the registry, but I don't know where to begin.
Deleted Windows 8 User Accounts - Other User In Password Screen?
Jul 13, 2014So, I wanted to download a game from the windows store and had to create a Live/microsoft account. After doning so win 8 made that account the account that I use to sigh-in to windows. Didn't wanted that so I went to user managment and deleted the account from thare. The problem is that I also accidenly deleted my windows user account as well.
After I restarted, I got to the password screen and my windows user was gone, just "other user". I tryed to enter the windows user name and password but nothing. the screen also showed the microsoft acount name but here also the password dident work (probably because a deleted them both from the system...)

Sep 15, 2014I have been using an unelevated admin user account since installing win 8.1 pro and I've been having problems constantly (UAC nagging me, access denied when trying to kill processes and so on) and I decided I want to use the elevated admin account as my main. I understand security risks and convenience is more important to me as I don't have any sensitive information on my laptop. I was wondering if I can merge the user account I used until now, which has all my app settings, with the elevated admin user account and use that one from now on.

Sep 15, 2014I have recently installed 8.1 on my desktop with 3 local user accounts (no Microsoft accounts) and no user passwords, and Guest account Off. I have bypassed the lock screen but whenever the computer is switched on or a user signs out, the OS loads the last user instead of going to the user select screen. Something that all Windows OSs have done from go to Win 7. I can back arrow which does display the user select screen.
Or more importantly, any way to make it act like all previous Windows systems. I would not be fussed if this was a single user computer.

Aug 28, 2014I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

Sep 15, 2014I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

Sep 15, 2014I recently bought an ASUS N550 with the idea of replacing the HDD with an SSD and using an HDD caddy wanted to put the old hard drive back in and use the extra memory. I took all these steps, copying the contents of the HDD onto the SSD, then putting the SSD in the hard drive position and the HDD in the space where the optical drive used to be.
However, if anything, my pc has become slower since this change. I assume that this is because the laptop is still loading the OS through the HDD. Why is this? If the SSD is in the hard drive slot, I don't know why the OS isn't being loaded through it.
I looked into changing the UEFI Firmware Settings, however it wasn't immediately apparent how to change the boot drive. How I can run my system through the SSD?

motherboard is ASROCK FM2A58M-HD+
500 gb hard drive and 4 gb Ram
For about the last week or so my Norton 360 has been picking up a threat, every time I turn my pc on. I thought Norton was getting rid of It so I didn't pay to much attention until my media player kept playing up and certain programs wouldn't load or take a long time, so I did some research and it turned out to be a trojen. anyway I have tried to put my pc into safe mode and have restarted my pc. my operating system wont load back up.
I have a red screen with a power button that gives me the option to restart or shut down. and there is a ease of access button. I have tried repairing with the original disk but it say my hard drive is locked. and it wont let me reinstall it either.

Jul 18, 2014Here is an issue I have run into since I side graded to 8.1.Pro on one of my machines. I expect the other machine has the same issue but I mostly use 7 ATM. I have some XP virtual machines that were created by importing the image of XP into VMWare Player and now those VM refuse to run with the following error.
It is obvious the VM was based on the XP machine from Windows 7 Ultimate. How can I fix this as XP Mode does not install and Windows 7 is no longer on this machine so I can't point the program at the file on another OS drive?
Windows 8.1 - Cannot Load Programs Via Web
Jul 14, 2014I cannot load programs via the web (this may also be true of programs from disc) I have tried to install programs from Bank Tree, Dassault Systems, and numerous others and they all freeze during the initiation stages, I have tried installing in safe mode but this will not work as due to the safe mode, something is missing, so I turned off the firewall but this had no effect at all, this situation is driving me mad I'll bet it's the pesky Windows 8.1 that is the problem.

Oct 5, 2013My pc shut off today all of a sudden, it was running normally, and next time power on windows would not start up normally. the power turn on as normal, windows 8 blue logo show up with circle running for 3 seconds, then screen would show a sign losing signal from monitor, then screen would turn dark, nothing going on, power still on, no beep, no sound or anything.
I am running windows 8 retail with license bought from Microsoft on ssd, and windows 8.1 enterprise rtm on a separate drive. Normally there are 2 items on blue boot menu.
I managed to log into safe mode, everything is still there, icons and files, installed software. I checked boot record and there are still same as before.
