View 1 RepliesI currently have an issue with activating Windows 8.1. I bought a Samsung series 7 chronos NP780 last November that came with Windows 8 installed already. I upgraded to 8.1 a few days ago and left it overnight to complete. Everything went fine up until I had to activate it. It says that the product key is incorrect and to enter a different one. I have looked at the box that the laptop came in, the manuals in it and on the laptop itself and there is no product key to be found. One or two of the manuals/booklets might be missing but I'm fairly sure that the product key is within the BIOS so should it not recognise the product key itself automatically and complete the upgrade without asking me for the key? I ran belarc to can by laptop and at the section where the product key should be it says "Key: None activated". I also ran keyfinder and the key it gave me back didnt work (although the end of it seems to match the end of the one that is listed as the "current product key".

Windows 8 preinstalled on new computers have the problem of the PC Settings window keep opening up on its own.
The right-hand side of the window states: 'This Product Key doesn't work.........etc. The bottom of the window states that it should have come with an email on purchase of the computer.
When I query this with both Acer & Windows they tell me that the Product Key no. is in the BIOS. That's all well & good but how do I stop this window continually opening?
I did a fresh reboot of my system and now I cannot reactivate it. My product ID is "not available" and I have an activation error description. I've tried all the slui commands and the sfc scans.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.
I just reinstalled 8 on a ssd and tried to install 8.1 from the store but it says i need to update windows first. I tried running windows update but i get an error saying "Windows could not search for new updates" error code 80240440. I tried everything I could find online and nothing seems to work. I tried restarting windows update, i tried turning off firewall, I tried reinstalling windows again and selecting "check for updates online" before installing from the cd, i tried running a check disk, and there is absolutely no program installed on the drive other than windows.

I already have a Windows 8 Pro USB installer setup but I don't think it can be used to do a repair install for my Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade. So I'm trying to create a new USB installer setup specifically for Win 8.1 Pro. However, the Windows 8.1 setup window is not accepting the 8.1 Product Key that I extracted from Belarc, ProduKey and WPkey. Is there a way to get around that issue so that I can create the Win 8.1 USB installer?

I visited this link -- Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Microsoft Windows Support, clicked the "Install Windows 8" button, ran the setup file that downloaded, and when prompted for the product key, entered it, only to see the message.
The product key cannot be used to install a retail version of Windows 8.
Is there another ISO I should be using? Ultimately I'm trying to get an ISO for use with my VMWare Fusion 6 install running on my Mac (10.9.1). I'm confident the product key given to me by my company is legit, but it obviously isn't a retail product key, probably some kind of corporate key or the equivalent.
What would happen to my Acer motherboards hard coded Win 8.1 product key, when I use a Win 8.1 Pro key to upgrade my system (By using the Add features to Windows in Control Panel) Would the new Pro key replace it? Or what, if anything relevant to me, the user, would happen?

I've tried multiple product keys (We own multiple computers, two of which have Windows 8 installed), but I get the same error with all of them.
Edit: Because none of my product keys don't work, I can't install Windows 8 to further install Windows 8.1.

Can you system image a drive that has Win 8.1 (OEM) onto a new SSD, and not have your sheer will destroyed by the OS not being activated after the image has been applied to new SSD?
I would hope that once the image has been applied to the new drive, the magic within Win 8.1 would realise I am using the same motherboard, but it's just a different drive. Infact, I'm keeping the original 2TB drive in the exact same slot, but of course formatting it once I can get the SSD to boot. (I'm installing the SSD into my Acer's expansion SATA 3 bay on the front of the case - hot swappable technology or something)

So, I have purchased some computers from Dell and they have Windows 8.0 Professional from the OEM. So, it was very easy for me to use my MSDN media, reinstall Windows 8.0, and it simply detected and used my Windows 8 embedded BIOS key. From there, I would make any adjustments needed, run sysprep, and grab an image. This allowed me to use that image on any of the Dell's that I purchased with Windows 8 and all was great.
Then, along comes the free upgrade to Windows 8.1. I took one of my Dell's, and laid down a clean windows 8.0 image. Then I ran the Store "free" upgrade to Windows 8.1. All was well. I then cleaned up the temporary files and whatnot and tried to run Sysprep only to be greeted with an error that said, "I cannot validate your OS installation". Did some research and found that you aren't supposed to run Sysprep on a machine that you ran an "upgrade". Instead, you are supposed to install from scratch.
Ok, let's do that. Grabbed the 8.1 ISO from MSDN, put it onto an installable USB key, started the install and it now prompts me for a key. It won't detect or use the embedded 8.0 key that is on the box. So, I cannot actually clean install Windows 8.1 with the embedded OEM key, even though I can freely upgrade to 8.1.
I'm not going to take my new Dell computers, lay down the clean 8.0 image and then upgrade each of them manually via the store to Windows 8.1. This takes way too long.
I'm not going to use my MSDN keys to install onto these machines, because I don't want them to activate these keys. They aren't the legit keys for these machines. These machines have legit OEM Windows 8 keys and 8.1 is a free upgrade to 8.0, so it seems like these legit keys would work. I paid dell to have a valid OEM license on the computer, that is what I want to use.
Any way to get 8.1 Pro to install clean, on a machine with an embedded 8.0 Pro key.
Ive used pirated bootables with preinstalled product keys in the past but am now on the straight and narrow, wanting to add my product key to my legitimate copy of windows 8. This way I wont have to worry about having it written down, losing it or entering it incorrectly, since it will be automatically entered for me. How I can add the product key to my bootable image?

View 4 Replies View Related I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)
I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.
Pattern - "Restart to install updates"
Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)
"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails
"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.
Then I can get back into Windows.
As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates.What could be going on?
They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.
I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.
I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".
I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).
Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?
I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.
I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss!
I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.
