Updates :: Windows 8 Become Suddenly Inactivated?

Sep 8, 2013

I upgraded my Windows from 7 to 8 pro using the 40$ offer and it worked like a charm Unfortunately, today my room-mate tried to install a cracked version of Microsofot Office 365 and he ruined my computer. My windows 8 become inactive and the Windows keeps asking me to activate it. I saw a lot of soltion for the error code 0xC004F074 here and all of them require the product key which I do not have.

Updates :: Windows Suddenly Not Activated?

Mar 25, 2014

I used my retail Windows 8 Pro key to activate Windows 8.1 RTM. Then used my Windows Media Center to add features and get Windoes Media Center

I used my laptop for like 5 days, now suddenly I see the build number mentioned on the desktop, so I checked my activation status and it said windows is not activated

I clicked Activate Now, and it shows my product key ending in: GBFNG-2X3TC-8R27F-RMKYB-JK7QT that is a default installation key and not an actual product key

So I hit the Enter key button and enter my Windows 8 key again, that says : "this key cannot be used to activate this edition of Windows".

I used the WMC key, that also says "This key didn't work try another key"

Could this be because I tried to use the Windows Setup box yesterday?

Trying to change the product manually in CMD also didn't work:

Updates :: Failure Configuring Windows Updates From Clean Install

May 24, 2014

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.

Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"

This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.

I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

Updates :: Windows 8.1 - Error 0XC000021A After Optional Updates

Mar 13, 2014

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.

I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.

I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".

I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).

Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Updates :: Failure Configuring Windows Updates - Reverting Changes

Sep 15, 2014

I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.

I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss!

I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.

Updates :: Unable To Install Windows Updates Or MSI Files

Feb 16, 2014

So some background. I had issues with being able to install ANYTHING from an MSI file. Then I wasn't able to install any updates from Windows Update. I then reinstalled Windows, and am now facing the same issue after a few days. I would rather not reinstall yet again.

I tried doing System Restore, but it just hangs. Windows Installer hangs on "preparing to install".

Updates :: Failure Configuring Windows Updates Reverting Changes

Jun 21, 2014

I just bought new Asus Vivotab Smart Windows 8 tablet, after the very first windows update it failed to install some of the updates, and then after the reboot I am now stuck with the message "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes".

It never gets any further than this, it never reverts, I have left it running for an entire day and have restarted several times.

This is a tablet, so there is no keyboard so I cannot press any F keys to get into recovery mode, and no CD to boot from etc.

Windows 8.1 Boot Up Suddenly Longer?

Jun 17, 2014

I have a Lenovo y50 and it used to boot in 12 seconds, but recently started to take over 30 seconds to boot. I've had this laptop for around a week now. It happened ever since I reinstalled my nvidia driver. Im not sure if its just a coincidence that it happened at the time I reinstalled it. I made sure all traces of the driver were gone before reinstalling it. The loading circle in the beginning of the boot used to move smoothly but now it visibly lags and moves slowly. I've tried the "Clean up my PC" option and it still has the problem. Here is the event log:Link

I disabled fast boot and shut off the computer and then turned it on again(not restart). Then I enabled fast boot and now it boots at the time it did before. Very strange lol. Now it boots even faster, in around 10 seconds as opposed to 12.

Suddenly No Sound - Dell Laptop Windows 8

Sep 19, 2014

Cant get any sound via built in speaker or headphone jack. Have checked settings through speaker volume icon lower task bar, Dell Audio control icon, and checked for audio enabled or not through device manager/soundvideogamecontrollers/Realtek high def sound etc. All looks perfect.

This loss of sound MAY have happened after running SUPERAntiSpyware that my ex-computer "expert" installed and instructed me to run regularly. I lost sound also when he last serviced my computer and installed SUPERantispyware (among other unknown things he did), but he somehow restored the sound through changing a power management option I think. I just tried that again to no luck.

But what it means when someone says "install new drivers" or "reinstall drivers" - my Windows 8 came preloaded and upgrade to 8.1 has failed twice so I gave up - nothing to do with this problem arising though.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Suddenly Takes Ages To Boot

Dec 16, 2013

I have suddenly got this problem. To the best of my knowledge I haven't installed anything prior to this happening. My pc used to take prob less than a minute to boot, but now takes around 10mins. Once booted it runs fine.

PC:

I have updated and scanned with Sophos AV and Windows defender and both show clean. I cannot boot to safe mode as the start up is so slow that nothing happens anymore hitting f8.

I have defragged and optimised both HDDs and run chkdisk.

No warnings in device manager. A few errors in eventlog but nothing major or consistent - I can get them if wanted.
I used SFC /SCANNOW Command which initially failed so I used Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth this appeared to work and then on running sfc /scannow then completed successfully with no errors, but no change in boot speed.

I then used system restore to restore the computer to prior to this happening - this completed successfully, but still no change on the boot up speed.

I then downloaded and ran the Windows Assessment console and have the logs, but am unsure really where to go with them. They are attached (Axelog).

Audio :: Windows 8 Sound Suddenly Stopped Working?

Sep 14, 2013

I have a dual boot Win 7, Win 8 setup. Suddenly the audio has stopped working on Win 8. (Works fine on Win 7) I checked for driver updates, even "installed" an old driver which didn't actually install. The volume control shows its trying to work, puff of green comes and goes at the bottom of the slider.

However I've tried "cleaning" for other concerns and that made a real mess of the setups for several programs. I suppose I could do a refresh but that's equivalent to a re-install..

Windows 8.1 - Suddenly Lost Admin Privileges And Now Unable To Change

Dec 28, 2013

I have had Windows 8 for approx 1 year and just upgraded to Windows 8.1 last week.

I installed bitdefender total security at the same time and everything was fine for a few days until one morning I woke up my Laptop to find I couldnt open a software program. Further investigation has found that I can not alter anything on my machine.

I have only the one user account which has my name, email, Administrator and password protected showing.

I can use my laptop still but have no admin rights at all.

When i try to open command prompt (admin) it takes a few minutes to come back with an error saying cannot access specified path, file folder etc...

I cant even restore my system back to factory settings. How can I restore my factory settings from this point??

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Computer Suddenly Became Slow - 100% Disk Usage?

Apr 13, 2013

My Task Manager:

HP Pavilion with Intel Core i3 running on Windows 8 and NVIDIA GEFORE GT 630M 1GB

My relatively new (about 2 months old) laptop running on Windows 8 suddenly became slow. I noticed it starting yesterday when it became really laggy. Just a few days ago it was working just fine.

I tried to look for solutions online and was worried that it might be caused by malware. I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it found no infections. When I boot in safe mode, it seems pretty fine. I tried doing a system restore but I was also informed that it wasn't completely done probably because of an antivirus.

My antivirus is Norton Internet Security and I've read that Norton can be such a hog so I've tried disabling it though not entirely and it hasn't been uninstalled yet. I've also tried running a chkdsk /r because going to Tools > Check for Errors on my C: drive said that there were errors that needed repair.

It has become less laggy but apparently not totally (not to previous state). My task manager however still shows 100% disk usage. Previously Norton would be listed among the top but now it's usually "System" and I don't quite understand why.

Updates :: No Boot After Updates - System Restore Only Option Available?

Aug 19, 2013

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)

I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.

Pattern - "Restart to install updates"

Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)

"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails

"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.

Then I can get back into Windows.

As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates. What could be going on?

They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)

Updates :: Failed To Configure Updates / Reverting Changes Loop

Jul 15, 2014

So I restored my system because I had no other choice from it not booting before and it was working for a day, then when I restarted it said 'installing XX / 93 updates' so I let that run, and when It finally finished, it restarted said 'configuring windows updates XX% complete...' and then it suddenly said "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." and then it looped this by restarting, trying to configure them, and then saying "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." again...

I've got back into safe mode, what should I do to make it update properly again?

Someone suggested toggling "Secure Boot" in the BIOS, is that worth a try?
