Updates :: Stop Error 0xc000021a After Windows Update
Aug 22, 2014
Asus S200E notebook, Win 8 Pro
I recently took in this laptop for my neighbor. The original idea was to scan and clean up the system. I set the laptop up in my office, ran an MSE full scan with no issues. Then ran a full Malwarebytes scan, which returned a few pups, which were removed.
After tending to other matters, I turned back to the laptop to find notification that there was a problem and windows had to restart. I ran another MWB scan only to have the system restart again. This time, the system tried to repair itself with automatic repair. No go. All reboots ended up back at the advanced startup options screen. No ability to restore the system image, no system restore. All I could get to was the cmd prompt.
Googling turned up all sorts of people with this issue (mostly older posts), but very few solutions.
This fix got my system booted again by removing pending update operations.
Apparently, an MS update is the source of the problem. To further reinforce this, until I turned off automatic updating, it would happen again. I also disconnected the machine from my network to revoke its internet access.
So the machine is no longer having start issues, but I'm not sure which update it is. I have 17 pending optional updates, but those haven't installed, so I doubt they're an issue.
I checked update history and there are 29 failed updates. All are dated within the period that the laptop has been in my possession.
I think it would be quit tedious to hide each one individually, only to blue screen, enter the DISM fix, get back into windows and do it all again. How I could identify which update is resulting in the stop error.
To muddy the waters, I've been trying to image the drive via Acronis TI 2014 but can't complete due to 'found disk errors' on C:. Trying to create a system image from within windows halts due to disk errors also, but chkdsk reports no errors (from windows and from cmd).
I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.
I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.
I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".
I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).
Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?
I would like to stop a specific update from installing, but am having trouble doing that. I can stop all updates from being downloaded by making a registry alteration, but this keeps me from downloading any updates.
I own Dell laptop (windows 8 pro with media centre -- GENUINE , NO PIRATING,nothing cracked) which is hardly 3 years old.. it just worked fine till yesterday evening.. i was playing saints row 4 and after closing that game noticed that the battery is about to get low to 10 %.. i just kept it in sleep mode to charge it later as the current was not there in home.. when i just make it resume u just got a blue screen saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're collecting some info, and then we'll restart for u(100 % complete)" and I am stuck here with no change in screen in the meantime the area of the processor fan gets heated to such an extent that we cant even able to touch it...
suddenly today when i tried to boot my pc pc i faced the "0xC000021A" error. I have tried a lot of things such as safe mode, windows auto repair and "bootrec /fixmbr" & "bootrec /fixboot" commands but nothing worked..
I have an HP that I cannot get to activate. I did a clean install and my login is an admin. I deselected installing Norton's during the reset but it was there when I booted up so I removed it with the Norton's removal tool. I tried activating by using the "Windows activation" from the search button and then tried by using an elevated command prompt of "slui.exe 4" but both ways gave me a 0xc0000022 error.
During update, Windows 8.1 restarts, and goes to the boot screen. Then gives this error: We couldn't complete the updates, Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer.
All updates that were installed get undone. And if you install updates again, it will do the same thing. The reason is because of one update: IE 11 Windows 8.1 - KB2962872
I just started getting this error today. It's a Microsoft Office 2013 update error, but I can find nothing by searching for it. I ran the automated update repair tool a couple of times but it did nothing.
Edit: I was able to download the update and install it, but Windows update still tries to install it and fails.
I have a problem with update. Last night I was connected thrugh VPN to internet and in this mood windows update get some update. now I can't download updates without VPN. I must conneced to vpn then trying to update otherwise I get error 80072EFD.
I have a Acer Windows 8 computer and its stuck on reverting update changes and restarting. It says "Failed configuring Windows Updates Reverting changes" then restarts and then does that again. I cannot go to the desktop.
When I search for updates with windows update it finds the drivers I want but it gives me an error message whenever I try to install them.
I already tried downloading the latest windows update (when I install it, it says the update was succesful and asks me to restart, but when I search again after restarting the update shows up again and lets me install it again).
I also tried deleting and renaming my software distribution folder and using the windows troubleshooting program.
Overall I'm not really too fussed about most of the things it's trying to install apart from the drivers for the wireless reciever for my xbox controller as it won't work without them. When I try to install the driver files through device manager it gives me this error message
my main reason for mentioning the windows update problem is that I assume the problems are linked as the wireless reciever works perfectly on my laptop. Up to about a week ago it also worked perfectly on this computer using the same usb port that it uses now.
As you can see, on the 19th, it suddenly began to say "NULL DRIVER". I checked my system restore and it tells me that I installed a windows update on that day just before it suddenly stopped working. I tried reverting back to this restore point (before the update) and nothing had changed, the device still would not work.
I just bought my computer 2 weeks ago .. I filled in my specs and also uploaded my system info information as an attachment. Last night, I tried to download the windows 8.1 update. I let it run over night, but this morning when I woke, I had a blue screen that said windows could not fix my problem .. and gave me options to try. I ended up having to wipe my computer to factory conditions. After the restore .. the only thing I installed before downloading updates was my driver for my NVIDIA Geforce750 Ti card, and my wireless network adapter ..
I then downloaded 91 updates .. all failed .. and didn't install .. error 800F0922.
sfc /scannow .. got to 51% .. then ..
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windirlogscbscbs.log. For example C:windowslogscbscbs.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.
I have installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro Version a few weeks back on my desktop computer running 64 bit version of the OS. The OS was running perfectly fine until today when it started showing activation error. This is not right since I had installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 with a legit key since I have an MSDN subscription As you can see in below pic. It says that you can activate the Windows Machine now
Now I went ahead and tried to activate the windows by the key which I had intially activated and also with a new fresh different key which I haven't any activated windows machine yet. Both the steps didn't yield any fruitful results
1) When I hit "Activate" button
2) When I click "Error Details"
3) When I click "See Support info online" - Nothing happens
I have tried below troubleshooting steps but nothing happened yet
Run sfc/scannow command. This failed at 42%Tried to scan registry and fix the registry by using Advanced System Care 7.2 Pro EditionRefresh the PC. PC was unable to refresh. I had inserted my OS USB DriveTried System Restore to yesterday state. System Restore too failedUninstalled Windows Updates that were installed yesterday.
I just finished installing Win 8.1 update after 2 hours of troubleshooting.
My new problem is getting crashed every 5 minutes with the blue screen if death and getting error Critical Structure Corruption on my freshly install win 8.1 update.
Windows Update trying to install KB2976627, continually receiving error that I do not have enough disk space remaining to install the update. My OS Drive has 75 GB Remaining.
So I had to do a System Repair thing where Windows would repair itself and removing all my apps but keep my documents, photos and music etc. So I was reinstalling every program again and also wanted to install the updates.
But I ran into 0x800f0922 error code and I couldnt install them. (I run Windows 8.1 Pro) I was trying to install Adobe Photoshop but couldnt continue cuz .NET framework 3.5 was required. But after trying to manually download + install I got the same error (0x800f0922). I've tried almost every cmd command but couldnt fix it.
I just reinstalled Windows and tried installing the updates again, but same thing. I cannot install any update at all.
A few hours later, Windows Defender KB2267602, definition 1.125.4350, 59.7 MB update failed to installed.
Error code 8050A003
Found something strange. I opened the View Updates history, and I found out that the update was installed successfully when it was offered the first time. A few hours late, same update was offered again, and this time it failed to install.
I'm using the Asus Eee Slate EP121. This happened more than once that Windows prompted me to install an update, then fails. Sometimes the update prompt disappears even though it was not installed. Today it prompted me to install an update called "Qualcomm Atheros Communications driver update for Bluetooth Module" and failed.
I just reinstalled 8 on a ssd and tried to install 8.1 from the store but it says i need to update windows first. I tried running windows update but i get an error saying "Windows could not search for new updates" error code 80240440. I tried everything I could find online and nothing seems to work. I tried restarting windows update, i tried turning off firewall, I tried reinstalling windows again and selecting "check for updates online" before installing from the cd, i tried running a check disk, and there is absolutely no program installed on the drive other than windows.
My update history does not show any updates after 1/22/14. I know for sure that I have successfully installed at least a few dozen updates since then (almost all of them involving Windows Defender).
I'm constantly trying to update my Windows 8 but I'm unable to do so, because everytime I try to update it, it fails to install because of an errors. To be specific, its two updates with different errors 8007371B and 80073712.
Those two updates are the only one showing up. Their id is KB2856373 (Update for Windows 8 on x64 CPU's) and KB2781197 (Security update for Windows 8 on x64 CPU's).
I have already tried sfc, chkdisk, Windows update diagnostics from Microsoft website, resetting the services, Windows build-in tool to fix Windows update errors and nothing worked.
I am on a limited speed line and Windows 8.1 has started to download the update. I now find that is it is some 3G in size and that will take days. How can I stop the download?
How can I stop the download of Windows 8.1?
Effectively I cannot do any online work until I can stop the download hogging the limited bandwidth.
It's a patch for Win 8.0 that allows you, with a Registry change, to have your BSODs actually be useful, like in previous versions.
That this isn't for 8.1 is interesting: does it already have this capability? I know "DisplayParameters" doesn't exist in 8.1, at least, but it may not be needed in 8.1 if the default there is on.
I have Windows 8.1 RTM installed on my computer. Some days ago, Microsoft released the GA updates for the system. Windows update downloaded them, but they failed to install... I've downloaded the updates manually and applied them in the correct order... But no luck, the updates fail to install...
I have windows 8, 32 bit & I'm trying to clear my print spooler, which I've done many times. I go to "run," type "cmd" & enter the command: "net stop spooler." When I execute the spooler command I get the above error message. I did a search on google & got a lot of hits but none of them were useful. What is going on & how do I solve this "system 5 error" problem?
