Browsers/Mail :: Chrome Closing After Being Opened
Jan 8, 2014I mentioned not so long back that the chrome browser was closing after being opened and then getting a report that Chrome did not close properly! So after many weeks of this, I decided to return to firefox, in spite of the so called spyware.
Just now, I opened Firefox to do a Google search for somewhere, and - it shut down. When I reopened it, it opened on the page that had crashed. Google search.
So, it either not just chrome, or its a google thing?

Jan 22, 2014Okay so this has happened several times now and I can't find an solution, I just got finished installking several extensions and changed some settings to Google Chrome, but when I close it, it like resets the browser to default every time and none of them are saved? This is the only web browser this is happening on and its strange?

Jul 30, 2014IE11 seems to have a strange "Feature". When you close a Web site with an active download the whole thing closes and the download disappears -- IE 11 shows no windows open.
However press CTRL+J and you'll see the download lists again. If there's no activity press PAUSE and then press RESUME and then it should continue from where it stopped.
To some this might seem obvious but I've seen people re-start a 2hr download because they thought they had lost their currently active download when they accidentally closed the web site.

Apr 1, 2014I normally only use 2 apps: the Mail and the Video, and even after I close these two apps, when I take a look at the Processes tab in the Task Manager, they are still there, there's no more CPU usage but they keep using Memory, which is usually a lot. So every time I want to actually close an app I have to open up the Task Manager, go to the Process tab and kill them off there, otherwise they'll keep using my memory.

Feb 4, 2014I recently reinstalled Windows 8 completely because I bought an SSD for in my laptop. I exported my power plans I used before the reset (when Windows was still on the HDD) and imported them again after the reset. In every power plan, Windows should go to sleep mode when closing the laptop lid, but that's not what's happening. Instead, Windows shuts down entirely, but the power light on my laptop indicates it's in sleep mode (flashing slowly). I also tried the built-in power plans (after just adjusting the appropriate setting), but the same happens. When i change the setting to do nothing (instead of going to sleep mode), it acts like it should: it does nothing.

Windows Keep Closing When Browsing Files Or Copying / Moving?
Aug 30, 2013I've just installed 8 on my Dell OptiPlex 380 at the office and I've noticed that randomly, file explorer windows will close on their own - even when I'm not actively working with them. The same goes for file copy/move operations.
I first thought it might be that the external hard drive was losing connection but now I've noticed it when working with local drives and when browsing my documents folder. No error at all - the window simply disappears. If the it's a copy process, the file will be partially copied so it's definitely ending the process and not just hiding it.
For the record, this existed from the first second I installed it, before I even installed any software.

Oct 19, 2013In Windows 8.1, Modern UI app processes continue to run after I've closed the actual apps. I don't know if this behavior is intentional or not, nor do I know of any way to prevent it. I know in Windows 8.0, just about all apps stopped their processes after you close them. So why the persistence now in Windows 8.1? Caching/speed improvement? Is this unique to my system or is there a setting that can stop this behavior? I'd test part of this myself, except I don't currently have access to my other systems at home.
System details:
Windows 8.1 x64 fully updated via Windows Update
All apps fully updated from Windows 8.1 store
Laptop Won't Wake Up After Closing The Lid
Feb 17, 2013I had this problem and so have tons of other people looking for a way to fix it. You close your laptop lid only to discover - sometimes.. not all the time, the PC will not wake up from sleep. Hitting buttons, moving the mouse, nothing works. You wind up hard booting the system to get back in.
My solution involved checking that Sleep mode under Power Options was actually activated to begin with. People don't want the PC going blank on them so they set all options to Do Nothing under "Change what happens when I close the lid". This is the wrong thing to do. I had everything set to Do Nothing. What should have been checked was Sleep. This will put the PC into sleep mode and you can wake it up by moving the mouse.
However we don't want it to work this way. We want to close the lid and have the PC not go into sleep mode at all. Even if under "Choose when to turn off the display" and "Change when the computer sleeps" and all your power plan settings are set to "Never", some PC's will still give you a black screen when you close the lid as if your going into sleep mode. As if something is clearly not working. It's not really going into sleep mode. It's fooling you. It's wonky. I have been unable to determine the cause of this but if actually activating sleep mode fixes the problem, then so be it. The next step will be to get out your shotgun and blast the sucker - nobody wants that.
Because this sleep mode did sometimes work under "Change what happens when I close the lid" with all settings set to Do Nothing, it seems that the bios or some hardware based function is controlling what happens when you close the lid. Choosing to activate the sleep option from Windows seems to override that function. I could be wrong about what is actually happening here, I'm just going on appearances. I'd rather my display never darkens at all even with the lid closed but I'll take this fix for now.
Alt-F4 Is Taking To Second Screen Instead Of Closing?
Jan 19, 2013I am really used to using Alt-F4 to close the current application. I just bought a Toshiba C855 (windows 8, of course), and when I press Alt-F4 to close IE10 (the one I launch from the desktop, not the "app", although I'm not sure yet what the difference is), I get the "second screen" thing coming in from the right. It tells about choosing what happens to a second monitor connected to your system. I also get this screen when I press F4, so it seems like the whole F4 thing has been re-directed.
Every guide and manual I've seen so far says that Alt-F4 works to close an application, so why isn't this working that way?

Sep 15, 2014F4.I really disliked the fact that a slip of the hand that results in me pressing F4 means closing a window, so I went to BIOS mode and added the prefix of 'Fn +.' So I pressed F4 to try it out and it performed the exact same function. So naturally I tried pressing Fn + F4 and it did the same thing. I'm pretty irked that F4 = Fn + F4.
So the question of the day is: how do I prevent F4 from closing my window? I don't want to disable it completely because I want to attach another hotkey to it (ex: F4 = go back one song for a music player.) If I wanted to do that, I would've used Sharpkeys.

In the power options I have the settings set to sleep when closing the lid of the laptop, but the computer seems to always turn off. When I open the lid, my computer is completely off and I have to press the power button to turn it back on and wait for windows to reload.
This is not a battery problem as it happens even when plugged in. I have also tried using the command prompt "powercfg /hibernate on" but it hasn't fixed anything.

Apr 24, 2013I have Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. My computer was running fine until about 1 hour ago; now there is more lag. Substantial slowness when it boots up, small lag between my typing and what's seen on screen, lag opening and closing programs, etc. I can no longer use Dragon NatuallySpeaking because the computer is too slow.
This is not due to bloatware or too many apps--It happened suddenly (computer started slowing down right away). I have not installed any new programs. I have tried both shutting down and restarting my computer.

Jul 5, 2013I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.

Dec 17, 2013My parents bought a PC last year running Windows 8. I set up there talktalk E mail accounts in the Windows 8 Native E mail client from the Mail tile at the start screen without any problem. All worked fine until recently when in order to download an app they had to register an Outlook E Mail address. Not sure if they had updates applied as well but they had to start logging on to the PC at boot up every time using a password. In an effort to resolve this they restored the PC to an earlier time which has cured the logging on issue (ie no password required) but when they access the Mail tile from the start screen it is an outlook E Mail account that comes up. I have tried without success logging into this outlook account and then adding the talktalk accounts. I even tried using my own account but could not add that either.
All they want is to click the Mail tile and get there talktalk accounts to come up just as before (no outlook or hotmail or anything else). Is there a way to reset the E Mail client/tile in Windows 8 back to what came with PC so that I could set it up just as I did when the PC was purchased. They are running Windows 8 and do not wish to restore back to factory settings as they have a few other bits and pieces of software installed.If they upgrade to Windows 8.1 will they be forced into using a password to log on every time ?

Dec 31, 2013I cannot remove my Windows Live email account so whenever I want to send email, I had to click on the "Gmail" tab first then compose email and I don't want this because it's somehow not efficient.
I use the default Windows 8.1 Mail client but I never used my Windows Live account.
Is there any ways to remove Windows Live email or at least make Gmail as the default email address on Windows Mail?

Sep 15, 2014I check Reliability Monitor from time to time. I was taken aback today to find Windows Mail creating a critical event and appearing as 'Stopped working' each day for the past six days. There are five listings on day one, five on day two, two on day three, one on day four, two on day five and two on day six. 'Check for a solution' provides no solution. I do have to close and reopen Windows Mail on some occasions when it is stuck at 'Connecting'. The second attempt usually results in Windows Mail receiving mail. That, however, has been a situation that I have lived with for a long time and I am unaware that it caused a critical event in the past. Now, it seems, a critical event is created each time I open Windows Mail. Please move this to 'Performance and Maintenance' if more appropriate.
