I like to watch videos on my left monitor while using windows 8 apps on my second. The only problem is that as soon as I interact with the monitor I'm watching the video on the app on my other monitor closes and it goes right to the desktop.
View 1 RepliesF4.I really disliked the fact that a slip of the hand that results in me pressing F4 means closing a window, so I went to BIOS mode and added the prefix of 'Fn +.' So I pressed F4 to try it out and it performed the exact same function. So naturally I tried pressing Fn + F4 and it did the same thing. I'm pretty irked that F4 = Fn + F4.
So the question of the day is: how do I prevent F4 from closing my window? I don't want to disable it completely because I want to attach another hotkey to it (ex: F4 = go back one song for a music player.) If I wanted to do that, I would've used Sharpkeys.
Windows 8. When the monitor turns off on my laptop, it locks the computer and when i wake it i have to enter the password again, i wish to disable this option not to be have to enter password every time i wake the laptop.
I searched a solution and the closest thing i saw is "require a password when waking the computer" the problem is if i disable this option there is no password even when waking from hibernation/sleep.
I wish to keep password protection when returning from hibernation/sleep but not when the monitor just turns off. Is it possible?
I have Windows 8 Pro, and a laptop.
My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.
Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?
I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.
The Mail in my Windows 8.1 keeps closing itself. No matter how many time I clicked it open, it closes itself.
View 2 Replies View RelatedToday I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.
I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.
I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.
I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.
how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.
Any buttons on keyboard to click at all?
I have an HP Envy and I would like Windows 8.1 to prompt me for a password both after I close (and open) my laptop lid and after waking it from sleep (Which it automatically does after 3 minutes of inactivity), however it only prompts for password after opening the lid (even if only closed for 5 seconds), and not after waking from sleep without a closed lid.

I've just installed 8 on my Dell OptiPlex 380 at the office and I've noticed that randomly, file explorer windows will close on their own - even when I'm not actively working with them. The same goes for file copy/move operations.
I first thought it might be that the external hard drive was losing connection but now I've noticed it when working with local drives and when browsing my documents folder. No error at all - the window simply disappears. If the it's a copy process, the file will be partially copied so it's definitely ending the process and not just hiding it.
For the record, this existed from the first second I installed it, before I even installed any software.
t i am fed up with the constant error messages since i upgraded to Windows 8.

In Windows 8.1, Modern UI app processes continue to run after I've closed the actual apps. I don't know if this behavior is intentional or not, nor do I know of any way to prevent it. I know in Windows 8.0, just about all apps stopped their processes after you close them. So why the persistence now in Windows 8.1? Caching/speed improvement? Is this unique to my system or is there a setting that can stop this behavior? I'd test part of this myself, except I don't currently have access to my other systems at home.

A lot of the time i like to just put on a youtube playlist and just lay in bed and watch it. Idk if this only happens with the youtube app that i am using or if its with jsut being inactive for anything. Is there a way i can prevent windows 8 from auto locking?. I have already disabled the lock screen, but it will still lock and jump to the login screen. I have turned screensaver off. And messed with the advanced power options. Nothing seems to work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI run this copy of Windows 8 Professional in a virtual machine and every time I leave that VM for just a couple of minutes the OS starts using up an enormous amount of HDD that significantly slows down my host machine. It turns out that Windows 8 begins what they call "Scheduled scan" when there's no user input:

and as soon I switch back to the VM with Windows 8 the HDD "hogging" stops. Obviously this is very annoying!
In light of this, I'd like to ask how to stop this background scanning?
PS. I tried going to the Action Center and schedule maintenance for 3AM or something remote but that doesn't seem to have any effect.
How do I ensure that nobody can slip in a Windows 7 or 8 disc and reinstall windows on my laptop? I have a BIOS password, but in the boot priority order it doesn't list my disc drive as an option.. Only "Windows Boot Manager"... So I'm unsure as to whether someone can just stick a disc in and reinstall windows.
Reason being is that I had my laptop stolen two months ago. I had tracking software on it (Prey), but the theif never connected to the internet, which is required for the software to work. Which leads me to assume that they just formatted (my win 7) laptop and reinstalled windows straight away. So I'm learning from my mistakes, and wanting to do it right for my new laptop.
You can prevent Windows from downloading the latest drivers for whichever device, BUT you can't prevent it from auto-installing drivers that it already has for whichever device. Meaning, the below trick, does nothing and Windows still installs drivers for several devices after you uninstall them and restart:

Am I able to use the Applocker to prevent this from occurring? I can sadly not give a screeny of this... because if the message appears, there seems to be no way to get rid of it, but making a new local account?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had this problem and so have tons of other people looking for a way to fix it. You close your laptop lid only to discover - sometimes.. not all the time, the PC will not wake up from sleep. Hitting buttons, moving the mouse, nothing works. You wind up hard booting the system to get back in.
My solution involved checking that Sleep mode under Power Options was actually activated to begin with. People don't want the PC going blank on them so they set all options to Do Nothing under "Change what happens when I close the lid". This is the wrong thing to do. I had everything set to Do Nothing. What should have been checked was Sleep. This will put the PC into sleep mode and you can wake it up by moving the mouse.
However we don't want it to work this way. We want to close the lid and have the PC not go into sleep mode at all. Even if under "Choose when to turn off the display" and "Change when the computer sleeps" and all your power plan settings are set to "Never", some PC's will still give you a black screen when you close the lid as if your going into sleep mode. As if something is clearly not working. It's not really going into sleep mode. It's fooling you. It's wonky. I have been unable to determine the cause of this but if actually activating sleep mode fixes the problem, then so be it. The next step will be to get out your shotgun and blast the sucker - nobody wants that.
Because this sleep mode did sometimes work under "Change what happens when I close the lid" with all settings set to Do Nothing, it seems that the bios or some hardware based function is controlling what happens when you close the lid. Choosing to activate the sleep option from Windows seems to override that function. I could be wrong about what is actually happening here, I'm just going on appearances. I'd rather my display never darkens at all even with the lid closed but I'll take this fix for now.
I am really used to using Alt-F4 to close the current application. I just bought a Toshiba C855 (windows 8, of course), and when I press Alt-F4 to close IE10 (the one I launch from the desktop, not the "app", although I'm not sure yet what the difference is), I get the "second screen" thing coming in from the right. It tells about choosing what happens to a second monitor connected to your system. I also get this screen when I press F4, so it seems like the whole F4 thing has been re-directed.
Every guide and manual I've seen so far says that Alt-F4 works to close an application, so why isn't this working that way?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new laptop which came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have since updated to 8.1 Pro with Media Center and so far, touch wood, things appear to be running well.
Having used Windows 7 for ages, I found the change to 8 somewhat difficult but I am slowly figuring it out. There will undoubtedly be things I cannot sort for myself but straight off the bat I have one question:
Where can I change a setting to stop in 8.1 from automatically going on line and downloading stuff I don't want? I do not want to prevent automatic downloading of Windows Updates etc, but I have just turned on and been greeted with a message telling me that Windows has downloaded 9 new apps - Alarms, Calculator, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, Tips, Reading List, Scan, Sound Recorder, Bing Desktop, and MS Silverlight (yes, I know, this is 10!)
I particularly want to keep this new Laptop free of unnecessary software which I will never use, basically all I want is Word, Excel, email capability, the ability to view TV (when away from home, hence the upgrade to 'Pro with Media Center') but little else. I will soon be abandoning my home cable internet connection and will be relying on a much reduced plan and so will not want the limited data used up because the O/S automatically loads the computer with rubbish.
I like to make my own custom Username for any Windows installation. However, Windows 8.1 Pro will simply create a Username for me based on my Microsoft account and that Username is just not tidy enough for me with dashes and not something cool and it doesn't ask me whether I want to type one up myself. The only way I found to prevent that from happening is disconnecting from the internet or disabling NIC in BIOS. Is there another way of doing so?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI mentioned not so long back that the chrome browser was closing after being opened and then getting a report that Chrome did not close properly! So after many weeks of this, I decided to return to firefox, in spite of the so called spyware.
Just now, I opened Firefox to do a Google search for somewhere, and - it shut down. When I reopened it, it opened on the page that had crashed. Google search.
So, it either not just chrome, or its a google thing?
Hey I just got a brand new Dell Inspiron with Windows 8 (got it yesterday). In the power options I have the settings set to sleep when closing the lid of the laptop, but the computer seems to always turn off. When I open the lid, my computer is completely off and I have to press the power button to turn it back on and wait for windows to reload.
This is not a battery problem as it happens even when plugged in. I have also tried using the command prompt "powercfg /hibernate on" but it hasn't fixed anything.
I have Windows 8 home with IE 10. I want to DISABLE selective browser history deletion (open history, right-click-delete certain websites). I don't have gpedit.msc but I believe it falls under the "Prevent User from deleting websites visited" or something along those lines. I found a registry key edit "CleanHistory" and I have changed the value back and forth from 0 and 1 but it still hasn't stopped me from being able to selectively delete. I found the registry key on multiple websites so I imagine it's supposed to work but it just isn't. User error, perhaps?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. My computer was running fine until about 1 hour ago; now there is more lag. Substantial slowness when it boots up, small lag between my typing and what's seen on screen, lag opening and closing programs, etc. I can no longer use Dragon NatuallySpeaking because the computer is too slow.
This is not due to bloatware or too many apps--It happened suddenly (computer started slowing down right away). I have not installed any new programs. I have tried both shutting down and restarting my computer.
Okay so this has happened several times now and I can't find an solution, I just got finished installking several extensions and changed some settings to Google Chrome, but when I close it, it like resets the browser to default every time and none of them are saved? This is the only web browser this is happening on and its strange?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIE11 seems to have a strange "Feature". When you close a Web site with an active download the whole thing closes and the download disappears -- IE 11 shows no windows open.
However press CTRL+J and you'll see the download lists again. If there's no activity press PAUSE and then press RESUME and then it should continue from where it stopped.
To some this might seem obvious but I've seen people re-start a 2hr download because they thought they had lost their currently active download when they accidentally closed the web site.
I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.
Regularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.
