View 3 RepliesMy son received a new HP laptop for Christmas, it is running windows 8. He changed his windows password and doesn't remember what it is. I never got the time to make recovery disks... Is there any way to reset the password? I tried downloading some windows password unlocker on my laptop, but couldn't ever get it to boot from the usb on his laptop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI updated my os from 8 to 8.1 a few months back. I put a password and pin as sign in options, and have been using the pin ever since.
I started my pc today and noticed it was asking for the password not the pin. Since, I had not been using it, I forgot the password. There is no 'sign in options' for me to switch to the pin. I have tried almost every password that I might have put, but no luck. I'm sure I must have put some hint for the password, but it didn't show up even once.
There is an option to access my Microsoft account, but since I don't have any saved WiFi networks, that's not an option.
I forgot my builtin admin password and somehow my user is a standard user, i cannot do anything. Is there any way to reset admin password or to change it? I have tried some programs but no success, cannot do system restore also, everything needs administrative rights . I'm using Windows 8.1, retail version
View 7 Replies View RelatedFor some reason I forgot my Microsoft password on my new box. It won't let me access it. I've tried every password I have ever used and the only thing it says is to go to access.live.com to reset my password. I'm afraid to try it on this computer for fear it will lock me out of this one too. It is MY computer. I'd really rather NOT have any security on it at all since no one else would use it without my permission, anyway. Justa gigantic

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.
I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?
I've booted into safe mode in windows 8.1 by setting the safe mode option in msconfig..
However, when I booted into safemode i realized that I've forgot my password because i usually use a pincode.
How to I get it out of safe boot again? - I've tried to access command prompt, but everything needs that password.
Is there any way to force it to boot up normally again?
i want to back windows 8 to disk and the software on the computer wont let me so how to use them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, the device uses an eMMC for the drive. Is it possible to set the ATA security password on the drive, just like you can for regular hard drives? I don't see an option in the BIOS to set it. Perhaps the option is there somewhere though.
I basically want to protect the data on the tablet. I don't think the BIOS administrator/user password provides sufficient security since that password can be reset and the data can then be accessed. I don't want to use software encryption since I don't want to slow the device down.
How can you read what files were backed up to a backup disk?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 8 and Outlook 2010. I have created a profile for my company's Exchange Server. The set-up is correct because my username is recognized. However when I try to access Outlook, I get asked for my credentials by "Windows Security." It has the dots in the dialogue box indicating that there is a saved password. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that old password is and where it is coming from. When I try to overwrite it with the new and correct password and check the remember my password box, it just ignores it and redisplays the security message with the old password pre-filled. I am dead in the water with my corporate email which I don't need to add is not good.
I have deleted anything that might be an Outlook credential using the Control Panel. I have deleted my profile and started from scratch. I have also deleted my personal MSN account email and tried that but with the same results. There are some that suggest that the password is stored in the registry, but I know from experience not to mess with the registry without some professional advice, especially with a new operating system.
I was trying to activate the administrator account and a UAC message popped up telling em to enter administrator password and click yes but there was nowhere to enter password and the yes button is disabled out. I can't do anything on control panel neither because its not letting me. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work.

That's the long and the short of it. I changed the boot priority in BIOS to boot the USB first. I got it to read the USB key one time when plugged into the USB 2.0 port. While the busy circles were twirling I got a "please wait." Then I got a command prompt flicker, then a screen from Windows saying it did not boot properly.
So I turned off Secure Boot. Made the USB boot stick over again. Now I get nada no matter what. I hold down the power button to shut down. When I power back up it just goes to the regular logon screen.
I was hoping to be able to boot off the stick to avoid buying a 5 pack of CDR just to burn one disc. At least for now to have my system backed up.
Since a week is it impossible to make a Win7 Backup Image (Control Panel).
This is the feature that got removed in 8.1 but now (on 8) I'm still using it in case I need to restore the OS.
The message shows this:
"Not enough disk space" but I have 360GB free on one disk and 150GB on another. The image is calculated at 67GB and it worked each time until now.
All OS updates installed.
I am having trouble with a message in Action Center in Windows 8.1. It is saying "Check Backup Disk Space" and I cannot hide the message. I had Windows 7 File Recovery setup with Windows 8.1, but now after the upgrade, the message is "stuck." Can this be fixed? These two links explain it perfectly:

I have BitLocker enabled on a laptop's boot/OS drive. It has worked well for almost a year but it hung when shutting down the other day and I had to press and hold the power button for 4 seconds to power it off. Now when I power it back on, it asks for the password as normal but then it starts in recovery mode and asks for the recovery key as well. Unfortunately I do not have the recovery key.
I know that the password I am entering is correct because it rejects any other password (as would be expected) and only prompts for the recovery key when I enter the correct password.
Am I going to be able to recover my data without this recovery key it is asking for?
My laptop wouldn't accept my password, I tried about 9 times. Then I got a box stating:' You need a password reset disk', but how do I do/get that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 8 Pro laptop with a single SSD. I just encrypted the entire drive using Bitlocker. The process prompted me to save the recovery key, which I did to an external drive. The encryption was successful but nowhere during the process was I prompted to choose a password. So I have the drive encrypted but when I reboot it does so normally without asking me for a key or password to access the drive.

As of late , after awaking from sleep mode, the Action Center is requesting me to re-enter my password. I am clueless as to why this is happening.
The only change is that I cancelled my MS Office 365 [P6] subscription.
Maybe the unlinking? of [original1@original1.onmicrosoft.com] from [original1@live.com] is causing this behavior. Dunno?
I had used the on microsoft as my Windows 8 login account and had a few problems with that.
So I deleted that 'user' and created a new one with the .live email.
But that was more than a year ago. It's not the end of the world or anything, just a bit annoying and worrisome that it may be a 'bogus' pop-up in Action Center.
I see the write-up on how to make a password reset disk on a USB flash memory stick. But is there a way to make a password reset disk on a CD?
WHAT I DID:
1. Inserted a blank CD in the optical drive.
2. Opened control panel and clicked "User Accounts". But in the left panel there is no option "Create a password reset disk". All I see are:
Control Panel HomeManage your credentialsManage your file encryption certificatesConfigure advanced user profile propertiesChange my environment variables.
Do I HAVE TO insert a USB stick to see the password reset option? (I don't have a spare USB stick to test with)
Running Win 8.0 on a Dell Studio 1537 laptop.
I activated Bitlocker for my Operating system drive on a Windows 8 machine. But when starting the process I only can back up the recovery key. I have no dialog to choose how to unlock the drive. Thus even though Bitlocker is running, the PC can be turned and windows can be accessed by common user authentication. No password prompt appears at an early instant of the boot-process.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm seeking full-disk encryption software. I want to encrypt the volume that my Windows installation is on.
First of all, does Bitlocker come on the home edition of Windows 8.1? I recall on previous versions it was only available in the Pro editions.
However, I would prefer to use an open-source disk encryption solution. I've searched but I have not found any that can encryption the Windows installation volume, the ones I found (such as TrueCrypt) can only set up additional encrypted partitions which is no good for me.
I use O&O Disk Image 7.2 to make images of my Windows 8 drive. Occasionally I need to mount an image to access folders and files. One folder I can't access is my user folder. I get the message 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder.' I took ownership of the folder but that didn't work. I get a similar result for the folder "C:WindowsCSC" if you want to see how my user folder behaves.
How can I access my user folder on my mounted image?
I have Windows 8.1 with super admin rights. My problem happened so suddenly. When I turn on my pc, it stead of going all the way into Windows, my pc is stuck at an empty Metro Menu. I have Classic Shell installed. I tried to delete it but it didn't work.
All of my settings are forgotten: icon size, folder settings, quick launch and even hotkeys and general settings in most of my Adobe programs. It also forgot with what applications to open certain file types.
I tried setting up my folders and icons to "View Details" and apply the setting to all of my folders - but even that I can't do. It can't seem to remember anything. Every time I open My Pc, I have those huge clunky icons with the annoying browser window to the left with Skydrive..

Dell Backup and Recovery software has not been able to detect or use "the second dvd blank disk" on my computer.
I tried booting up my PC which has Windows 8 installed and it was working fine until yesterday.
It has a "Enter Password" screen upon start-up and I think it's a virus because it only lets me enter 10 characters and even though, I do put in the correct password, it still says it's incorrect. The computer also shuts down after 3 unsuccessful attempts.
I have attached a picture of the screen.
