In the last day my computer has disappeared from my local network. i have itunes home sharing and folders i share from this computer but suddenly gone. It is a problem with the firewall because when i turn it off it works right. i DID NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES IN THE FIREWALL AT ALL. Running windwows 8.1 64 bit. View 9 RepliesI have a local network at home with 1 router, 5-6 computers and a few gadgets connected through WiFi.
I have a problem with one of the computers with Windows 8.1, let's call it Computer A. When I boot it, it is connectable from the other computers using its local IP address. But after a few hours it usually disappears from the network, and I'm only able to connect to it using the router's external IP and port forwarding.
By "disappears from the network", I mean that it's still connected to the router and to the internet, but none of the other units on the network is able to connect to it in any way.
Computer A can always connect to the the other computers on the network and to the internet.
The problem is solved if I reboot Computer A, so at the moment I have a scheduled task to reboot it every night. Unfortunately, sometimes it disappears from the local network after only a few hours after boot.
Turning the firewall off on Computer A doesn't work.

Its been 2 hours since this problem occured. i started my laptop and saw that some icons were white, when i clicked on the icon it says "The drive or network connection that the shortcut Counter-Strike.lnk refers to is unavailable.

I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)
Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!
Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up
I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:
Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.
Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...
I've had this issue with chrome where, I'll close it and reopen later to find the error "Chrome didn't shut down correctly, click Restore". I'm trying to delete the local google folder on my computer(then reinstalling) in the program files(x86) and It will not let me. Saying "Folder access Denied" I require permission, even though I'm the administrator. I came across this site:Take Ownership Of Files And Folders In Windows 8 where they offered a way to add a "Take ownership" option to my menu options and included a uninstall reg file.
I already saw a similar thread on this site : Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8 but did not download from it b/c I did not know how to remove the reg file. I tried the take ownership from the first site and it didnt work, I used the uninstall reg file and now i'm frustrated and back to square one.
I can't even reinstall chrome at all b/c of some unspecified error, I just want to be able to delete the google folder on my computer to do a clean install.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."

I have an old computer that I've repurposed as a file server for all the other machines on my network, and one of the things I do with it is to put various program installer files on it, so I can install them to the other machines without having to download the same file over and over. However, when accessing these remote files from any machine except those still running XP, I get an extra warning box telling me that the file "is in a location outside your local network." It's not, but for some reason, these machines think it is. I've Googled various fragments of text from these warning boxes (each Windows version has slightly different wording for this warning; the screen shot I've attached is from the Win7 machine I happen to be on right now), but no matter which variant I search for, everything I find about getting rid of this warning is either geared toward similar warnings given by MS Access for remote databases, or for marking external Web sites as trusted.
How do I tell Windows that this local file server is in fact local and not in need of these repetitive and annoying warnings?
when extracting an archive to the same network location on which the archive itself resides, why is it that I'm having local bandwidth usage?
As you can see, there is simultaneous ~150Mbit/s upstream/downstream on my local ethernet adapter. WHY? As far as I am concerned there should be no meaningful traffic since it's actually a copy process on the local hard disk of my server.
I am trying to find a solution to transferring large files (100+GB) between myself and a client of mine at a different location through the internet. The easiest one I have found was through a Private Network through Logmein's Hamachi, as you can browse other connected computers' files through this network.
Of course, to show the shared drives by the host computer, you need to input a username and password through the UAC. Obviously, if I insert my own username and password, I can see the folders I've shared. However, how do I configure a username/password for my client? Are these users the same as local users? I would like to avoid having to make a local user for him on my own computer.
Just for reference, I have no control over my network I am connected to, so no FTP, no port forwarding etc.

I have two desktop PCs connected to my router, one named Mirabel running Win7 Pro, and one named Bessie running Win Server 2008 R2 (both 64-bit). These can see each other quite happily.
I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on my Dell Vostro 3750 lap top, which I named Rosie, but am having problems connecting to the other machines.
When I go to the Network node in Windows Explorer on Rosie, I can't see either of the other two machines, but if I type Bessie in the address bar, it shows me the two drives that are shared. However, if I try and explore either of these, I get the following error...
The laptop is part of a workgroup, imaginatively named "Workgroup" as are the other two machines...
I changed the properties of the TCP/IP v4 to match the ones on the other two machines (with a different IP address of course) but this didn't work.
The odd thing is that I can browse the shared drives on Mirabel without any problem. In case it's relevant, both desktop machines can browse Rosie without problems. Windows 8 has changed so much from Win7, and it's wasting a lot of time trying to get it set up.
The explorer bar disappeared and could not be restored. I did View --> Explorer bars --> Favorites. What could be wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAt my last place of work I primarily used Debian; at my new workplace, I really need to use Windows 8 on my desktop; that in itself is not a problem. The problem I'm experiencing is that the native RDP client (remote desktop) will always use the server's local keymap - and I do not use a qwerty keyboard. My opinions on this aside, I appear to have two main options:
1) Find an alternative RDP client which uses the local keymap, as the Linux clients generally do.
2) Simply learn to use qwerty.
I've had to luck with option number one, so before I start the misery of number two, I thought I'd try a last-ditch attempt, and ask others.
I'm setting up for the first time a Homegroup (on Windows 8.1) between laptop and desktop. So far, Im impressed with the speed of transmission from one computer to the other. However, I noticed that I can only access the C: drive as well as the Library stuff such as Music, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, etc folders. I would like to be able to access from my laptop the OTHER DRIVES on my desktop PC. What's the best way to do this?

It will list the site asking for permission to store information on my computer. The link I have attached below gives instructions on how to remove this pop-up. Is this flash player thing safe or is it some kind of virus or malware? The attached link refers to it as spyware. If I were to remove the Flash player program, will it affect playing games or whatever on my laptop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a serious problem with my computer i got a virus that deselected my graphics card and wouldn't allow me to go in bios so i thought that a factory restore would do it, unfortunately i was wrong. It turned off the computer and when i try to start it it just goes to a black screen for about an hour then goes to like some kind of power save mode where the power button is flashing and i tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. My screen works just fine but it says it dosen't get any input so my computer just isn't displaying anything. I am really scared and don't know what to do?

I have a new Dell laptop with Windows 8.1 - I work from home & connect to the internet via my home wifi network. The problem I have been experiencing is that my laptop connects to the internet at boot up but then disconnects for several minutes & then re-connects again. This coincides with the Network & Sharing Centre showing a number of Local Area Connections (numbered 3,4,5,6 etc) being created under Unidentified Public Networks. I have tried disabling the LAC's but they re-enable whenever I re-boot & I have the same issues again. My networking knowledge is very limited so how to rectify this issue.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs soon as I start an application (Cadence Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 but I don't think it's relevant) my CPU usage gets to the roof and stays there long after I killed the application and I believe I every associated process. The CPU usage is so high that the battery will be drained after about 45 minutes (It usually last about 3 hours).
According to my task manager the responsible is "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)". As a matter of fact, preventing the executable from accessing the network sort of solves the issue. I don't believe I need that executable to access the network but I'd like to understand what kind of network service can consume that much CPU (was actually affraid of overheating) and to know if there's a more appropriate way to solve this.
It was working earlier but couple of hours later when I booted up my Windows 8 laptop.. There was a red x on the network I was trying to connect to and a message saying my computer settings not matching.
I looked it up on youtube and I tried selecting "No authentication" and for encryption type I chose "None". But still didn't work.
Sometimes it would say limited first then when I try to reconnect the message above will appear.
Would it be possible to hide the 'Network Locations' in the 'My Computer' section in 8.1?

I have a private network configured as a Workgroup consisting of a W2000 photocopy machine,XP desktop, W7 desktop and laptop and now a Windows 8.1 desktop. During the initial installation I have files on the Windows 7 desktop I need so from Windows Explorer I clicked on the Windows 7 computer to gain access to the password shared folders and their files. I entered the User and Password info and clicked the "stay connnected" as I expected to reboot several times during this computers installation.
Everything worked just great UNTIL I no longer wanted the connection to the Windows 7 computer. On XP and even Windows 7 it was trivial to Disconnect a computer that I had established a share with.
However, on Windows 8.1 I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I disconnect the share with the Windows 7 computer?
This may seem trivial but I cannot figure it out. Obviously I can disconnect from the W7 computer but that computer is shared with others as well. And then the other computers would have to re-establish their shares. And, that would just be a work around.
I have a 1TB HDD connected via the network. 90% of the folders on this drive are fine, but a few were created by previous Windows installs.
I needed to delete the folder but it won't let me do so. I've tried fiddling with the security settings but they wont "stick". See the attached for what I mean.
I can't do anything with this folder. I can rename the folder, but everything inside the folder and the folder itself cannot be removed.
This is a random issue, sometimes I can connect just fine, and usually a restart of my laptop lets me connect.
However sometimes when I try to enter the password it does not work. I get the error message 'the network security key is not correct. Please try again.'
I know for a fact that my password is correct, and sometimes it works, allowing me to choose whether I want to 'find PC's, devices and content on this network' etc.
Regardless of whether I click yes or no at this point I don't connect. And instead I am getting to this screen below. What to enter as my username and password. As nothing to do with my wireless network has this requirement.
I can't create a simple text file and place it on my C: drive in Win 8.1 - says that I don't have permission. The properties of the drive show that I do - full control, every class of user. Am I missing something really simple?

Over the past two days two separate unknown network devices have appeared under 'This PC' in Windows Explorer (see screenshot below for the current one, along with its properties window). It appears people are able to access this computer - so a big problem!
As far as I can tell, all my security settings are in place (password on wireless network, all sharing disabled in Network and Sharing Centre, Windows Firewall is active, Windows Media Sharing is off).
How to close what I assume is a security loophole?
