Security :: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool Runs Daily?
Aug 14, 2014
I just looked at the Malicious Software Removal Tool log which seems to be located in the following folder,
%windir%debugmrt.log
Looking at the log it seems to be running daily as there is an entry for each day since I installed Windows 8.1
I thought this tool ran once and then deleted itself. Also I'm pretty sure in Vista and W7 ? that there was only a monthly entry.

Whatever website I open (Yahoo, Dogpile, Mail.com, and yes even Techguy.org), my Windows 8.1 is reporting dozens of malicious websites being accessed in the range of 74.120.16.xx,xx,xx,xx, etc. Tracing one of these addresses reports that it is a Honey Pot. How can I stop Techguy.org and others from sending me these malicious intrusions, or how can I stop Windows 8.1 from filling the screen with these malicious website reports. (And Techguy.org continues to send these malicious intrusions throughout my session, even as I write this complaint.) I have set security from Medium-high to Medium which seems to be the lowest setting. I am using the Chrome browser. I stopped using the built-in Explorer 11 because I can no longer get my on-line college course assignments or my Walgreens photos, but the malicious reports keep coming. I don't want to abandon Windows 8.1.

My father accidentally fell for the "your media player needs to be updated" and downloaded a ton of malware.
I used this guide: [URL]
And now it is running EXTREMELY slow and it can't load any Windows services on the computer. Any time I try to open a program it just stops responding.
Also while I was doing the malware removal "Safe mode with networking" was working fine. Now in the same "Safe mode with networking" the network isn't working. No internet available.
I am getting an error message "Failed to connect to system event notification center"
All the malware still isn't gone from Chrome but I need to fix this problem first.

Win 8.1 x64 Pro. Paper fell down behind my desk and while getting it my hand touched a power cord, the result being when I came back up the screen was frozen. I shut down by the computer button, waited, restarted and the Windows blue four rectangle image comes up and the dotted circle continues to rotate, but can't get past it. No shut down error message, as I would have expected. Repeated the process twice just to be sure. What is the best way to approach this? I do have a Win 8 original disk if needed and there are recent sys restores and a system disk image on another internal HDD.
Update: On the fourth try, after a bit a message has come up, "Scanning and repairing drive (K)." It's gotten to 7% complete but seems stuck there. Since Windows drive labeling and user labeling are often different, not sure what drive it's working on.

I bought myself a Radeon HD 7770 a few months back to replace an old GeForce 9600GT. A few weeks after installing the AMD card, I was going through my programs cleaning out old files and decided to remove all the Nvidia stuff. I removed the drivers and stuff and upon reboot, my computer would no longer boot to the desktop. I ended up having to use system restore to get the computer working again...
Fast forward to yesterday. I upgraded from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, and I started experiencing the same problem listed here: "Win 8.1 desktop right click takes 15 seconds!" I tried the same solution that was found and it did not work for me. My guess is it had something to do with the Nvidia driver software still being installed on my computer. So I again attempted to remove the drivers. At this point I couldn't even remove the Nvidia software as nothing happened when I pressed the uninstall button. I ended up having to reinsert the Nvidia card, and reinstall the drivers, in order to uninstall the drivers. After I restarted and reinstalled the AMD card, the computer, like before would no longer boot to the desktop. All I would get was a mouse pointer that would appear and disappear every couple of seconds and a Number lock button on the keyboard that would be turning on and off at the same interval. If I reinsert the Nvidia card the problem goes away, but obviously I don't want to keep the old card in my computer.
My question is: Why would the computer boot with the Nvidia card when the Nvidia drivers are uninstalled and yet not boot with the AMD card when the AMD drivers ARE installed?

I've done considerable research on this and still can't find the exact Windows 8 process that causes this. PROBLEM: There is a service host process that keeps the CPU busy (12%), and consequently causes my computer to run warmer than it does under Windows 7. About 15 degrees Celsius warmer. If I kill that service process, the temperature drops back to about 38 Celsius at idle.
I see others on the www complaining about this also, but no resolve.. Well, if you kill the process it fixes the heat problem, but then the computer doesn't run right without that particular host process. And if you expand that process there are about 10 to 15 sub processes. But which one is the bad boy? Task manager doesn't break it down enough to isolate it.
This is not a big deal, my computer runs fine. It just annoys me whenever I run Windows 8. I feel like I should upgrade my standard 4th gen cpu cooler, and I shouldn't have to. I don't play games.

I'm about a year into windows 8, which came pre installed on a Lenovo C440, 64 bit, 1 terrabite HD partitioned into C,467 GB,E,storage 437 GB. I updated to 8.1 a few weeks ago and aside from the 'feeling' that everything is running a bit slow all else seems fine except: ever since I got 8 I've been losing space on C drive, about a GB or 2 a week somewhere I got hint to go to System, delete all restore points and then create a new restore point.
I'd do this whenever I'd be down 4/5 gigs and get all the lost space back. Since I went to 8.1 I'm losing a gig or more a day, and it doesn't come back after the delete restore process. I use CC cleaner daily and remove everything but cookies ( way too much trouble to have to log in again at every site I go to).
I don't hibernate, just sleep
I auto defrag once a week
I have Trend Micro do a full scan nightly
I still have plenty of space but I've lost about 9 GB in 3 weeks of 8.1

having issue with SkyDrive turning "Access all files offline" option OFF automatically in Windows 8.1 Pro? This happens almost daily, sometimes within few hours of turning it on.
I manage a lots of PCs, and this problem is not on just one PC, this happens on a lot of PCs randomly. All these PCs have separate Microsoft accounts.
i'm looking for is 100% available offline, all the time. Never had an issue before this integration of SkyDrive with Windows 8.1.

I'm having strange issues where my computer just takes a long time to load things.
For example, I used to be able to run half a dozen programs (and four or five tray icons processes) just fine and everything would run smoothly. But now for some reason, running just two or three is causing huge performance issues. Microsoft Word 2013, Zune, Steam, CyberLink PowerDirector, Skype, Google Chrome, and all Adobe products.
You can check my system specs, but I recently wiped my hard drive and installed Windows 8 Pro fresh and I don't understand why this is happening now.
A contributing factor might be that I only have 235 GB left out of my 1 TB? But I don't feel like that should be doing it.....

I have an ASUS Vivotab running Windows 8. I am seeing that the service process hits 100% disk usage from roughly 4:58PM - 5:04PM daily. I've made sure that my antivirus is't downloading updates or running during that time, same with Windows Update, Live Update, etc. How can I find what specific process is running during that time that is killing the machine given I know when to watch for it?

So, this started happening after I upgraded from 4770k to 4790k (or at least I think it started then, can't exactly remember), I keep getting BSoDs or blackout resets (Screen goes black and then resets the entire computer), I'm not sure what's causing this.
I've re-installed my Windows and it still does that (I re-install my programs immediately every time I re-install my Windows, so program could still be an issue), this is driving me crazy cause this is happening almost every day.
And yes, I have updated my BIOS before even installing that new processor, and I'm sure that they're compatible. (It's an ASUS Z87-PRO by the way.)
I did an SFC /scannow, nothing unusual pops up.
I did an overnight memtest (memtest86+), no errors (7 passes?).
I've reseated the RAM, still does that.

I've been getting blue screens of death infrequently, attached to my PC randomly losing power and hard freezes. I used to ignore it (used to get it rarely in BF4 a while ago, and often in Star-Citizen), but with things like LoL or Diablo 3, it doesn't ever happen.
Now i've been playing ArcheAge it's been happening alot, I purged my ATI drivers (was getting an AODDriver registry issue showing up with Event Viewer) with uninstall and the reg-edit clean. Then installed the most recent build and used CC cleaner to clean out a whole lot of issues it found. The random shutdowns and freezes seemed to have stopped, but I've still been getting the System_Service_Exception BSOD a few times a night of constant play.
I have a bad suspicion with the freezes / shutdowns it's a HDD issue or a power supply issue, but after the driver clean i've only been getting BSODs so far (as the oldest parts of my PC is my 5+ year old Corsair 620W and my HDDs that now are sitting loose as my 280x is too wide for the case(getting a 750D and a SSD for boot soon hopefully, then PSU later).
Still getting freezes. I think the attached ZIP is what i need to attach, I accidentally ran it twice not realising the folder where it put the dump.

For XP users who want to keep using their XP system why not run VMWARE VMPLAYER -- FREE in UNITY MODE.
You don't need even to run Windows as your Host --how to create a Portable system that runs Windows Virtual machines and totally boots from an external HDD / USB stick (even if there's no HDD in the main computer !!).
Using Unity mode simply gives you access to all your Windows XP programs (and runs them) directly from the Host without you needing to enter the VM at all -- Power up your VM and simply click the Unity mode on the vm menu.
If you use Linux as a host it saves you having to purchase a new version of windows (Linux is FREE). Simply convert your XP system to a VM and then you can keep running XP for as long as you like without worrying about having to upgrade Windows.

I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.

Unsure what happened here. Never had this kind of error before. Laptop runs fine. However, when I go into control panel and select "check for updates" it literally does nothing other than sort of freeze up...not a crash just runs real slow and it "clocks" Windows update tool never comes up. Everything runs fine and normal otherwise

CPU INTEL CORE I--3770K LGA1155
Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V
I feel my pc is not fast enough, so i opened Task Manager, Performance and as usual when doing almost nothing CPU runs between 1.5 ghz and 3 ghz.
When needed he goes up to 4.06 ghz.
I do not like this at all, and want CPU to perform at least at 3.5 ghz as he is supposed to do.
above you see both motherboard and CPU.

done this many times on many systems. . SSD on many systems. never an issue w7. how to set 2nd hdd boot inactive, given HP BIOS EFI is brick dumb. (intractable)
I am aware that GPT EFI is setup to block booting from "unauthorized media" but secureboot, turns that off.
GPT doomed. But SSD runs perfect by itself. Ok windows, 8 and 8.1 64bit, Brand new laptop, hp 17.3 e-0067cl (for wifey)
I did's:update Windows 8 , 100 updates, took 16hrs. (crashes it,endlessly) good now ( i did 10 upates, 10 times for 100) magic of MS.
update to 8.1 ok.
backup to external hdd , using Paragon Windows 8.1 backup (hp make recovery disk to 32gb sandisk extreme flash, fails, and HP forum all others too.....a bad
rebecca.exe.)
Kick to curb the DVD drive install a new caddy and new SSD. (in same , it works) mirror old hdd to new ssd, using farstone, (the best and free) moved, ssd to hdd, main location. hdd out of system. Boots and runs fast as lighting, now I put in the HDD to the caddy, yes, i know that only one disk can be active. but how do you flip that bit, not plugged in, sure.'?now the dumb, BIOS EFI in the HP can not select boot sequence at all, it has just this boot manager, that is not accessible..at all.it runs a while then wants to boot to hdd, i can't stop it nor fix bios, but (esc+f9) force boots work to SSD. as expected. So i try partition-wizard, it shows HDD as active and can not set to inactive, (it's not fully gpt aware? but works great all other modes)i hide all those partitions and the boot up ignores hidden flag....
i run from elevated CMD.exe, MS- DISKPART and select (old windows (my label) vol 2. i command Inactive to old windows part. vol2 it errors out, saying, can only be used no MBR disk.i read up on that and it meant, GPTs don't have active flags (bits) ok, im game...odd how windows 8 DISKPART is not up to the task for GPT, or I dont know Diskpart anymore....?
I want to keep the HDD in the system. for the D:recovery partition, that HP needs. and will not fit on SSD.
BIOS set to NON secure boot, for all this. testing.did not try SATA legacy mode, (it gives warnings in BIOS not to use that) i moved this hdd to non efi bios system desktop, with win 8.0 and same deal. I wonder what my win7 Desktop would do?, wreck the GPT , structures? i'll not do that.
My guess is there is new procedure to render the GPT EFI , inactive, but is not documented?, (tons of format it from scratch, i tried, my Windows 8 startup repair STICK (PE) same Diskpart error. How to control this GPT disk, (drive 2) is there a DISPART2(gpt)?

I have tried:
Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.
