My friend's Dell Inspiron laptop is set to turn off the monitor after 10 minutes. Once that happens, we cannot get the screen to come back on again, hitting any keys or mouse buttons, or even tapping the power button, does not do it. It is not asleep or hibernating, the power light is lit and hard drive is spinning. Have to force a shutdown.
I know I can tell it to just not turn off the monitor
I have Hybrid boot a.k.a Fast Boot enabled before.. This occurred to me last week.
When I click on shut down, It shows shutting down and displays turns off.. little later the screen turns on and the desktop comes back.. If I have turn it off, I have to force the PC by holding the Power button. I googled it and they said to turn off Hybrid boot, but it was the only reason I installed Windows 8..
Now that I turned it off, it takes a while to turn on/off the PC..
This not only affects Shut Down but Sleep, Hibernate and Restart too..
I am fixing an HP Pavilion g7 Windows 8 laptop and when I turn the computer on, in about 5 minutes the screen powers down but the hard drive is still running. I have set the power options to turn OFF the display to never and to put the computer to sleep also to never and I have it set to power saver, the computer will repeat the same process over and over again. I have access to the internet or watch you tube videos but the problem remains.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far.
First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).
Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)
Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)
I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".
However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet.
I have Windows 8 Pro, and a laptop.
My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.
Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?
I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.
I have installed windows 8.1 pro . when I watch YouTube videos and remain inactive for a while then screen gets dimmer and then turns off. I could understand when nothing was done then screen would go idle but the video is running and screen turns off ...isn't it frustrating? so how to keep screen alive while watching YouTube videos but it should turn off when pc is inactive(other cases when video is not playing) ..
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am running windows 8 on my Toshiba Satellite L 300 , it was running smoothly and all its features are good too. but suddenly the screen turns out a solid color based on the color which was on desktop ( for example if i am having a yellowish theme, the solid color will be yellow ) .. i have seen a lot white and light yellow color the most when the screen change . after the color change the total system will be unresponsive, the only way i find is to press the power button for 2 seconds, ( ya full power off ) ... again if i start the system, may be it will work perfectly for a long time but suddenly again it happened..
the problem start before two weeks, i thought it may be due to some software error and i done a full system reboot and i don't have any program installed except windows 8, but still it exists. .. now i am sure that problem is somewhere in windows OS or my hardware ... i am unable to find whats going on ..

When powered up the Cap sensor buttons flash every second and the caps lock indicator flashes every other second. The problems seemed to occur after windows 8.1 automatic update. I have tried battery and power lead out, pressing power power on for 30 sec but it did not work.

Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. . why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

For instance, I open an email attachment and it automatically goes into full screen viewing. When I'm done looking at the attachment, how to go back to the previous email screen. So I have to go all the way back to the start screen, and then into my email to get to the previous page. I'm clearly doing it wrong.

I thought I would go back to using the log in screen, but when I got to the User Account dialogue box, the check box for "must sign in with password" was already checked. So now there doesn't seem to be a way to get the log in screen back.

In 8, I can snap the desktop screen to the right by pressing "Windows key" + "." or to the left with "Windows key" + "shift" + "." and this is a very handy sortcut but for some reason Microsoft has disabled this shortcut in 8.1. Any way to put it back in?
I have a Dell Inspiron 7572. I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and followed some instructions on upgrading the catalyst video driver. I downloaded this and installed and it asked me to restart. However all I get now is a black screen. If I try moving the mouse it appears for a couple of seconds then disappears. I can't find any way to boot into safe mode as I can get anything up on screen. I imagine uninstalling the display driver will fix the issue but I can't work out anyway to get into windows to do it.

When I hit apply the screen started flashing and it went to protrait. I saw thye option to revery back but with they screen flashing I couldn't hit it. Then the settings set in and the screen went back to the sigin in menu in portrait.
I can enter my password, sign in, and then it tries to load the start menu but the screen starts flashing and after about 8 seconds, it goes back to the sign in menu. Now I am stuck in this process and cant get back past the sign in screen to access the control panel and set the screen back to landscape.
I had win7 and Windows 8 on my system. then I deleted win7 and installed a fresh copy. the boot screen is now traditional black and white boot screen where we have to choose OS. I want Windows 8 blue boot screen back.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L675D, originally equipped with Windows 7 and then I upgraded it to Windows 8 with an original code. Basically, after a turn it on, the fans start for a couple of seconds and then they go really quiet (but I can still hear them) while nothing happens on the screen. It remains completely black for the whole time! The laptop is clearly on and the lights of the charger and of the power are enlighted. I tried using just the charger, just the battery, and both of them, but nothing changes.. Plus the CD reader looks to be working properly.

It turns on but the screen is blank and it does not respond to mouse or keyboard. The only way to get it to work is to uplug it and then plug it in again. This has happened numerous times. I don't turn it on, just when I wake its on (I check the Event Viewer to see what time it turns on). I thought that hibernate mode was zero power, so how would it be able to turn on? I always keep Windows update to automatic windows update installation mode. But if I reboot my laptop or shutdown it, then the update turns to "Never check for updates" mode. View 6 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Windows 8 from Win7 a few weeks ago. The display goes black after 60 seconds of inactivity no matter what setting I change. I would like to read documents without having to hit the space bar every minute.
My laptop is a Samsung Series 7 and requires Samsung Easy Settings to run the backlit keyboard. I've looked for a setting in the Samsung software, but don't think that is the problem.
I've also tried to adjust the power plan and advanced settings with no luck. My current power plan is set to Never on turn off the display. Adaptive brightness is turned off.
Windows 8. When the monitor turns off on my laptop, it locks the computer and when i wake it i have to enter the password again, i wish to disable this option not to be have to enter password every time i wake the laptop.
I searched a solution and the closest thing i saw is "require a password when waking the computer" the problem is if i disable this option there is no password even when waking from hibernation/sleep.
I wish to keep password protection when returning from hibernation/sleep but not when the monitor just turns off. Is it possible?
Older Acer tower/monitor running 8.1.1.
Oftentimes when I'm finished with my PC I'll turn the monitor off, the speakers off, and fold my arc mouse to let the system do maintenance. I have it set to sleep after an hour. I'll hit a key to wake it and turn everything back on. The lock screen appears then turns black. I then turn the monitor off and back on again. Sometimes the process repeats, however, it always stays on upon the 3rd try.
I thought I had the problem resolved by turning off by turning off the picture slide show on the lock screen. That worked for a few "out-of-sleeps" but then failed again. I have no virus according to Defender, which updates and scans daily. I did a few DISM/Scannow-s, (Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth) but those failed as seen by the snip below.
I have WDDM1.1 driver. Could it be corrupt? If so, how would I go about repairing it? I've scoured the MS site to no avail so to download then point to it. I searched my 8 DVD install media to no avail likewise. Not sure even if that would work being it will have the same name?
I have my laptop connected to an external monitor with HDMI. The laptop is always plugged into the A/C,and its cover is always closed, so it's used as a desktop computer.
I have noticed that the monitor often turns off very quickly, sometimes after only a few minutes of idle time. This is extremely annoying, and I don't know how to fix it. In Power Options, the "Turn off display after" setting is set to 10 minutes on battery and 30 minutes when plugged in.

Before I installed windows 8.1, I could just move a mouse or press any key and display would turn on, but since the installation I have to restart my laptop (Samsung ultrabook), even if I can hear it's on and working.
