View 1 RepliesMy Boot loader on my Desktop crashed so i formatted the drive as it was my only option. I'm attempting to reinstall windows...
-so i downloaded windows from: Upgrade Windows with only a product key as i was instructed to by the 1800 Microsoft support staff.
-made a usb installation media and used my Original Product Key. i did this on my laptop. and then once the installation media was finished i plugged it in to my desktop. it didn't work it said the product key was invalid and to please try again.
-so i called them back and the ended up giving me a new product key. i tried that with them still on the line and it didn't work their suggestion was to recreate the installation media.
- i did that this morning because i was irritated enough for one night. any way it didn't work, i noticed one thing. at the end of the creation of the installation media it keeps giving me my old product key to use.
Just to be clear because I tend to ramble a lot. this old product key is the one that i got from Microsoft when i purchased windows 8 pro. i purchased it online at microsoft.com when windows 8 first came out. i have no original installation disk because i originally downloaded some software from their site.
I dont want to buy a new copy of windows because in my opinion i shouldn't have to. What i would like to figure out is how do i create instalation media with the new product key that they gave me? every time i reinstall the install windows 8 file from Microsoft.com it for some strange reason keeps giving me my old product key and i cant seem to be able to change that.
Can I (correctly) convert my current 8.1 (retail) into VHDX and boot from it using the same 8.1 boot loader or not?
I honestly don't know if I would be running two instances. Would it work if I deleted the C:/ partition and booted the VHD from another disk or partition? Would that be OK? Seems to me it would be two instances but I don't know.
I'm not interested in VMware or VirtualBox - just Hyper-V or some similar bare metal solution. Hyper-V server I could not make work really - it is not what it is designed for - I want wifi, bluetooth etc. Windows server would work but I can not afford it.

What I need to know is that: Is that possible to integrate a loader onto Windows 8 boot loader to reset the activation to trial period and then activate the system with an offline key (activate as offline only)?
This way we could make somekind of loader to set activation status as OK as far as online is not intented. And we can continue to have an trial adventure for life with Windows 8. Is that possible or no one tried it yet?
One more question, does the dev who made that topic has the tool for his method so we can try it on any win8 machine? If so, download link?
So there was an update for windows 8 and after that it stopped opening the grub menus and it automatically goes to windows. I know it can recognize the drive with Linux on it because it shows it to me in file manager. Prior to that I unplugged and rep lugged the led plugs but I don't think that was the cause. So how do I show the grub menu?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is a brand new windows 8 system that was sold to a customer. He brought it in for being unable to boot into windows after having used it for a couple of weeks, and he demonstrated the issue to me. It literally just boots to grub. This customer is a basic windows user. No experience with linux or dual booting. He uses it for email. I have never come across this particular problem before, so I ran the normal partition tools to see if the table looked proper for a windows 8 machine. Everything checks out ok, however it is still booting to a grub prompt!!
View 7 Replies View RelatedAs Windows to Go is only available for ENTERPRISE versions and booting from a VHD requires there to be an OS already installed on the physical machine I was wondering if we could "Borrow" a trick from Linux.
Is it possible to install a Mini GRUB boot loader on a partition on an external HDD and on a second partition boot a Windows system.
Note here -- I want a RUNNING WINDOWS SYSTEM -- not an install / recovery / "Win PE" type system -- but a full Windows system that will work even if there is NO usable INTERNAL HDD drive in the computer.
Googling shows quite a few ways of either creating an INSTALL disk (HDD) or booting a VHD neither of which are what I want.
Using GRUB and booting an external HDD in theory should work -- and this should "almost replicate" a Windows to Go system.
(I've had an external USB Linux system with VMware player installed -- that method works but the Windows system is quite slow even on an external USB3 drive -- running a Windows system natively should be a lot better).
I've actually got a spare SSD which I want to use for this -- I replace a 128 GB drive with a new Samsung 256 GB drive as I got a great bargain on it -- 99 GBP LESS 20% VAT which I got back at customs at the airport.
I'll use the SATA==>USB3 connector for connecting to the PC.
(Another possibility might be to get the Linux boot loader to load a Windows VHD from the external drive as well -- but I want the Windows system to work even if there is NO INTERNAL HDD in the computer).
I know how to install windows but I am not able to do it before this problem,
1. Acer log on screen (Loading)
2. After loading, this will be the next screen, the system will restart
3. Then after restarting, this will be next (preparing automatic repair then diagnosing)
4. then after that, it will ask to restore the system
5. If you select restore, the system will restart then stuck in this screen
I am new in windows 8 and acer. I don't know what happen but before the system says its updating, then when I restart it this problem occurs.
I have black screen on boot , the boot logo doesn't appear , I can't access safe mode , black screen on recovery too , i tried to boot to reinstall the windows , the logo appears and start running , but black screen after that , I don't see the windows to install or to repair my laptop ! i tried Dium , which is a live session to repair laptops but can't access , black screen too i have a Hp Pavilion G6 , UEFI ...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows 8 using the "windlows 8 upgrade assistant", install went fine. got into windows 8, but it never replaced my MBR, which currently holds an installation of a linux bootloader known as "grub".
All guides point to having an installation dvd. to boot repair, then repair the mbr with a command in command line
I need another solution, since ive installed using the upgrade assistant, i dont have a dvd.
We purchased a new laptop for work it has windows 8 installed, but it does not support our software we use at work. We want to install Windows 7 but it won't boot from DVD or USB drive,
I googled and found that you can restart windows recovery and select boot from usb or dvd, but that option is not available on our system.
This laptop has windows 8 core 64.
I have a Lenovo S10-3t convertible touch tablet/netbook that I am creating a multiboot scenario for.
To cover all the details, here are my disks and my partition setup.
640GB HDD as the primary drive
32GB SDCard as the secondary drive.
Primary HDD has these partitions:
MBR PARTITION SCHEME
Partition 1: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit (492.33GB) NTFS, with Win 8 bootloader
Partition 2: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (79.28GB) HFS+ Journaled, with standalone mini-chameleon bootloader
Partition 3: Linux Mint 15 64-bit (23.28GB) EXT4 Journaled, with GRUB2 on this same partition
Partition 4 (in extended partition): Linux Swap (1.27GB) ...swap space
The SDCard has these partitions:
MBR PARTITION SCHEME
Partition 1: Dedicated to ReadyBoost (5GB) FAT32
Partition 2: Android x86 4.2.2 (24.84GB) EXT3, legacy GRUB SHOULD be in the MBR of this disk
I am using the Windows 8 graphical bootloader to manage everything, as it is a touch-screen tablet, and I like having the touch support for the bootloader. So I would PREFER to use it if possible.
I have currently added entries for OSX Snow Leopard and Linux Mint Olivia to the Windows 8 boot manager, and all three OSes chainload properly to their respective bootloaders and are happy with each other.
Is it possible to chainload the Legacy GRUB bootloader in the EXT3 partition on the SD Card that has Android on it with the Windows 8 Bootloader? And, if so, will you walk me through this process?
There's a couple of reasons...as this is a touch screen tablet I would prefer the convenience of having an option to boot Android from the touch-enabled Windows 8 Boot Manager instead of having to fold the screen away from the keyboard, press FN+F11 and selecting the SD Card as the primary boot device every time I want to go into Android. I could have android on a fifth partition on my HDD, but one of the reasons for having Android on flash memory is BECAUSE I have a mechanical HDD, and I use Android if I'm actively moving the laptop around in a rough environment (say, walking or in a moving vehicle for example, and the HDD would be off since it isn't needed). I know I could use an SSD, but I prefer having a mechanical HDD in my laptop for my own reasons.
I am using a combination of VisualBCDEditor and EasyBCD, and I cannot get either to see or acknowledge the existence of the EXT3 partition on the SDCard (though they all see the EXT4 and HFS+ volumes on the primary HDD, and the FAT32 partition on the SDCard...)
I've decided to go ahead and reinstall w8pro given my extensive messing around with it has finally caused some quirky, unexpected results - it's a relatively new installation, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, didn't get a chance to install a lot of third party programs and such. The thing is, I did purchase and install the Windows 8 media center pack - how do i go about getting this back? do i have to contact ms? I'm fairly certain that i don't have an activation number for the pack, if i recall i just paid for it online and then was allowed to download it and install it.
Also, i thought i would go ahead and do a clean install all over again as opposed to a reset or refresh given i want to make certain that i'm starting from scratch again... or do you think a reset or refresh might be the better option (i'm not concerned about keeping any personal settings or files intact).
I own a Samsung Series 5 laptop which currently runs Windows 8.1. I would like to do a clean install using the recovery media that was provided with the laptop. It's a UEFI PNY 16GB USB stick with recovery media on.
I have disabled password on boot and also disabled fast boot in order to make the boot from USB the top priority in regards to booting.
My friend just brought a HP laptop which has windows 8 pre installed but the problem is no key is mentioned on the back of laptop. So I was wondering if she ever has to reinstall the operating system how will she do it she does not even have the key so do we legally own the OS or not.

1. How can I download legaly windows 8 and reinstall windows?
2. Can I download windows 8.1 install without taping serial and activate afterwards?
Let's say your computer comes with Windows 8 (not 8 Pro) preinstalled, using a SLIC and not a product key. Yu decide you hate the OEM crapware and want to do a clean reinstall. Bt you don't have reinstallation media, or the media includes the crapware.

I used a program to extract the keys, but it seems that the media center add-on has overridden the pro key and it wont let me install windows. I noticed it gave me an internet explorer key that was different from the win8 key, but it rejected that too.
Is there a way to extract the original win8 pro key? I couldn't seem to find anything with google.

How can I reinstall my Windows. Finally, where is the product key for the Windows 8 written?
I thought Windows Search would be only the indexer function. So I went to Control Panel, Add remove programs, Install or Remove Windows components/resources (I have portuguese windows) And I removed Windows Search
But now I can't use any search feature (example: on explorer, on w8 start menu). So I tried to install again selecting "Windows Search" on windows components, but after click OK, nothing happens!
