We purchased a new laptop for work it has windows 8 installed, but it does not support our software we use at work. We want to install Windows 7 but it won't boot from DVD or USB drive,
I googled and found that you can restart windows recovery and select boot from usb or dvd, but that option is not available on our system.
This laptop has windows 8 core 64.
I've been having an issue with my Acer S7-391. I bought the Windows 8 machine in December, and the majority of the time when I start it up in the morning, it doesn't boot properly - it hangs on a black screen for ages. I then have to hit the off button and boot it back up again and, sometimes, it boots after having to go through a system repair. Also, sometimes it does boot properly from the get-go without having to jump through hoops - not often though.
Originally I thought it was an issue with me having upgraded to Windows 8.1 shortly after buying the laptop, but having rolled the machine back to Windows 8, the issue prevailed. Through trial and error, though, I've figured out when it does and when it doesn't boot properly (yeah, I'm slow). Basically, it never boots properly when I have a USB mouse/keyboard plugged in. I take them out, boot the machine, and can plug them in again almost immediately and everything works fine. But NEVER does it boot with these devices plugged in from the start.

I am having problems with system imaging my Windows 8 machine to an external hardrive via a usb (??) cable.
First, as mentioned in another thread is the exceptionally long time. The external drive is a WD 1TB BTW. I have two older hardrives on the computer. Just installed the second, which at this time is not being used. Trying several several programs, Paragon Free, Easeus, Macrium Reflect and the built in Windows Backup I was getting 14 hour estimates.
The actual issue I wish to resolve is that during a over 9 hour backup of the primary drive with approx. 34GBs, I noted what appears to be a folder with the Windows backup icon called the name of my computer on my external drive. It contains approximately 3GBs of data in multiple folders. Windows backup is turned off. I did not have this file on the external hardrive and I didn't initiate the OS to perform this. It showed no indication of running and occurred during the Macrium backup.
I don't know a lot about windows 8. I have a general enquiry to make. I would like to know that if I reinstall my windows 8 will I have to reinstall the programs of different drive. For example like I have my main OS in C: and many of my programs like steam and some other games are installed in D: so when I format my pc will I have to reinstall the programs present in D: or will there be any kind of error or something.

I put an SSD in there and installed Windows 8 on it using a USB Recovery Drive, which I don't have anymore. So my current setup looks like this:
After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the license of some software I'm using got messed up and I couldn't manage fixing it, so the only option I've got left is to reinstall/reset Windows. But since the Recovery partition is on another drive, when I go about creating a Recovery Drive, the option "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" is greyed out. I've got stuff on my HDD, which I can't currently backup so I don't wan't to format that drive. I'm perfectly fine with formatting the SSD, that's what I want.
How can I reinstall/reset my Windows? The only option I see is to install Windows on the Hard Drive (by doing a backup and formatting it first), and then create a usb recovery drive and reinstall again on the SSD, but that's a lot of hassle and I'd need to find an external hard drive for the backup.
I intentionally left the Hard Drive in the original bay (as Disk 0) because of the better protection against falling compared to the added bay in place of the DVD drive.
I do this day in and day out with Volume Licensing but never with OEM installs...
A user that works at our company brought their personal laptop in, the hard drive failed hard drive tests so we have put one of our spare hard drives in and now we need to re-install Windows 8 x64.
Where do i get the installation media from if the users doesn't have a disc? Is it possible or do we need to order a disc?
I have a newer Toshiba laptop that I tried to clean reinstall Windows 8 using the "reset" feature. I wiped the hard drive completely deleting all partitions. Now I cannot boot into anything. Short of ordering recovery dvds from Toshiba, is there a legal way to reinstall Windows 8 back on this laptop?

-so i downloaded windows from: Upgrade Windows with only a product key as i was instructed to by the 1800 Microsoft support staff.
-made a usb installation media and used my Original Product Key. i did this on my laptop. and then once the installation media was finished i plugged it in to my desktop. it didn't work it said the product key was invalid and to please try again.
-so i called them back and the ended up giving me a new product key. i tried that with them still on the line and it didn't work their suggestion was to recreate the installation media.
- i did that this morning because i was irritated enough for one night. any way it didn't work, i noticed one thing. at the end of the creation of the installation media it keeps giving me my old product key to use.
Just to be clear because I tend to ramble a lot. this old product key is the one that i got from Microsoft when i purchased windows 8 pro. i purchased it online at microsoft.com when windows 8 first came out. i have no original installation disk because i originally downloaded some software from their site.
I dont want to buy a new copy of windows because in my opinion i shouldn't have to. What i would like to figure out is how do i create instalation media with the new product key that they gave me? every time i reinstall the install windows 8 file from Microsoft.com it for some strange reason keeps giving me my old product key and i cant seem to be able to change that.

Windows 8.1 failing to boot when any usb storage drive is plugged in during boot. My only solution is to unplug everything each boot unless I use my KVM switch which does not support usb 3.0.

I own a Samsung Series 5 laptop which currently runs Windows 8.1. I would like to do a clean install using the recovery media that was provided with the laptop. It's a UEFI PNY 16GB USB stick with recovery media on.
I have disabled password on boot and also disabled fast boot in order to make the boot from USB the top priority in regards to booting.
I tried to reinstall windows on a second hard drive, but it won't accept my product key, assumedly because I am already using it for the current windows installation on the first hard drive.
How do I transfer my license to allow a reinstallation on the second hard drive? That's the best option, so I can go back to the first drive if I want to.
Second option: If I wipe the current windows partition clean, will that enable me to reinstall on the second hard drive?
I know how to install windows but I am not able to do it before this problem,
1. Acer log on screen (Loading)
2. After loading, this will be the next screen, the system will restart
3. Then after restarting, this will be next (preparing automatic repair then diagnosing)
4. then after that, it will ask to restore the system
5. If you select restore, the system will restart then stuck in this screen

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've decided to go ahead and reinstall w8pro given my extensive messing around with it has finally caused some quirky, unexpected results - it's a relatively new installation, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, didn't get a chance to install a lot of third party programs and such. The thing is, I did purchase and install the Windows 8 media center pack - how do i go about getting this back? do i have to contact ms? I'm fairly certain that i don't have an activation number for the pack, if i recall i just paid for it online and then was allowed to download it and install it.
Also, i thought i would go ahead and do a clean install all over again as opposed to a reset or refresh given i want to make certain that i'm starting from scratch again... or do you think a reset or refresh might be the better option (i'm not concerned about keeping any personal settings or files intact).
I formatted a HD that had the bootmanager on it. The Win 8 disc can't repair it. I'm also getting a message that my C: drive is locked.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three hard drives. One is a Kingston Hyperx SSD 120GB. The other two are for internal storage and are WD 500GB Blacks. I recently upgraded my computer. My new mother board is the ASUS M5A99X. I installed Windows 8 just fine back in Dec 2012 and it worked up until April-Mayish. My USB Hub was causing my computer to halt before POST. After exchanging it with a new hub, I was able to boot just fine.
Later that same day, I cleaned out the dust in my computer and added another harddrive. I wasn't able to boot Windows 8. It would just stop with a blinking cursor right before it should show the four blue panes. I went into BIOS and it didn't have my SSD listed. I accidentally unplugged the SATA cable for my SSD and forgot to plug it back in. After I plugged it back in I set the boot priority back to my SSD first.
I still couldn't boot so inserted my Windows CD to reformat. After it says "Press any key to boot from CD...." I didn't press anything and it loaded into Windows just fine. I loaded Windows this way for a while until I was able to troubleshoot it. After reformatting, I get "Please select proper boot device.." message. If I put the CD in, that goes away and it loads into windows after saying "Press any key to boot from the CD..." Here's what I've done to troubleshoot so far:
1. Set SSD to first in boot priority order in BIOS. Forced boot to my SSD in BIOS. Changed SATA from AHCI to RAID (lol) to IDE.
I've used bootrec.exe and tried
bootrec /RebuildBcdbootrec /fixMbrbootrec /fixboot
This still didn't resolve my issue.
2. I flashed my BIOS to 1708 because it was going to fix an issue I had with a USB device.
3. I reformatted Windows 8 with all drives unplugged except my SSD.
4. I've unplugged all SATA devices except my harddrive and tried to boot.
5. I've set the 2nd partition (90+GB) to active partition on my SSD.
My next step is to RMA the motherboard.
I got this new Asus Transformer which is a Windows 8.1 system.
I made a few images with Macrium Reflect and created an UEFI recovery Flash Drive (with Macrium) for the Macrium recovery program. I can set the BIOS to boot from the stick (in the temporary or permanent BIOS settings). Problem is, when I hit Enter, it ignores the stick and boots directly into 8.1.
Is there another setting in the BIOS that I have to make in order to have it boot from the stick.
I'm running Win 8 Pro which is installed on my SSD and I need to remove my secondary drive and connect it to another PC. When I do this, I get a boot error. Why an error shows up especially when it is not a boot drive.

C: is the SSD and K: is my PATA drive which I want to move.

I think it has something to do with my deleting the 'system reserved' 350mb partition when I reinstalled Windows 8. I don't want it showing in My Computer and when I go into Disk Management and give it a drive letter, this message goes away on boot. But, since I can't merge this very small partition with any other drive, I'm not sure how to not show this drive and not get the scanning message on boot up.
Just replaced my OS (Win 8.1) Drive, and was planning on using the old drive as a back up.
This new (and old) drive have just the OS, all my programs and media etc are on other drives.
Can I put my old OS drive, with Windows 8.1 still installed, into a USB Docking Station, and use it as a back up boot drive. In other words will this drive boot from the Docking Station if I keep it up to date (Copy Disk regularly) in case of internal hard drive failure?
Under control panel there is an application entitled "Recovery". I wanted to create a recovery drive on my USB memory stick. I did, and then tried to reboot from it just to see if it would work in case I needed it. It wouldn't boot.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8 installed on c drive and Linux mint installed on separate hard disk. Everything was working fine before I installed kubuntu from Linux mint. After installation I couldn't get into windows 8 because it was giving error message 0*c000000f. I tried to refresh Windows but no avail because windows has locked that drive and I couldn't access it. Than I decided to backup important files from windows 8 hard disk from Linux. I accessed windows 8 drive but three folders were missing "Windows" , "Users" and "Program Files(64)" other than that I can access all files and problem is all important data is in user folder.
Than I installed windows 8 on different partition still same thing cant access those three folders. Is there any possible way to simply access user folder?
