Network / Sharing :: Windows Firewall - Slows FTP / Telnet Connections

Oct 18, 2013

I user FTP & Telnet a lot to connect to devices on our LAN.

With Windows 8 I've been using ZoneAlarm as my firewall as I found Windows Firewall caused a 5 -10 second delay in every FTP / Telnet Connection.

Last night I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and ZoneAlarm no longer works, so I'm back with the Windows Firewall and the delay in connections.

I've ensured the APPS I use have access via the firewall and they do connect and work fine... but after establishing the connection there is a 5 - 10 second delay in the connection. With ZA this was all instant..

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 - Icons Pinned To Taskbar Slows Internet Speed

Dec 26, 2013

I use start 8 on both my windows 8.1 desktop and my tablet. My internet speeds were okay, but I wanted more. Based on the speed tests that I ran, it appeared to me that I was on Comcast's performance starter getting download speeds of 7.37mbps and uploads of 15.65. So I called Comcast to see about an upgrade. The tech that I spoke with stated that I already had the faster that they offer. He asked me how many icons did I have near the start button, I had 5, he told me to unpin them from the taskbar and my speeds went to DL - 57.48, the upload stayed pretty much the same 15.64.

Network / Sharing :: Internet Slows Down If Memory Overclocked To 2400 MHz

Mar 24, 2013

If I left my memory at stock speed (1333 MHz) my internet speed is normal (around 390-450 KB/s). But once I overclock it with XMP (2400 MHz @10-12-12-31 2T), it drops down to 30-60 KB/s. The internet speed will also back to normal if reduce the clock and timing to 2133 MHz @9-11-10-28 2T.

My motherboard is on qualified list by G.SKILL to run this memory on XMP profile (G.SKILL- World leading DDR3 computer memory and SSD manufacturer -Products) and I ran Prime95 Blend and 3DMark11 Physics test just fine.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Laptop Showing Duplicate Network Connections To Smart TV

Under the "Network" page, most of the "Properties" of the TV connections are the same except for "Serial Number" and "Unique Identifier". Did I do something wrong when setting things up? Are these extra connections harmful? Should I delete some? How?

Network / Sharing :: What Type Of VPN Connections Does Windows 8 Offer

This is the Windows VPN functionality that's available from the Metro themed interface and . But it's so dumbed-down that I can't even see what type of VPN connection this actually is.

If this connection if PPTP or L2TP? Or something else?

Whichever it is, is that connection considered to have integrity or is it more or less cracked?

Network / Sharing :: Toshiba Laptop - No Network Connections Available

Aug 20, 2014

On my Toshiba laptop (I've only had it since the 8th of August) under Networks it says, "No connections are available". I was playing Diablo3 and then it suddenly said not connected to battletnet. That is besides the point, but I think I might have hit something that turned the wifi off. After failing to fix it with a system restore it blue screened saying something about an error and collecting a data and that it was going to restart itself. Then it said to get more information or something like that the error code was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. After restarting I thought it was still messed up (it showed no networks available in the lock screen) then I logged on and it still did. Then it showed I was connected to WiFi again, then after leaving for a few brief minutes it was back to no connections available. It did the blue screen thing again and restarted.

Network / Sharing :: Scan For Available WiFi Connections?

Jul 5, 2013

When I turn on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, it does not see my i-phone hotspot. Wi-Fi status says "No Wi-Fi connections available". I always have to turn the hotspot off and then back on after the laptop is up and running for the laptop to find it. This does not happen with my desktop. It sees the i-phone hotspot without the need to cycle the hotspot off and back on, so I'm thinking that it has to do with the Toshiba rather than the i-phone. Both laptop and desktop are running Windows 8. Not a big problem, but I thought some one may know of a setting which I need to change.

Network / Sharing :: How To Remove Unused LAN Connections

Sep 15, 2014

So I've set up my desktop PC to function as a portable WiFi hotspot for my other mobile devices. First I used the Cmd Prompt to create a sharing network, but since I had to open that every time I started up the computer, I switched to using a program called MyPublicWiFi (1 click setup).

However, in the last few days, my WiFi connection was getting kind of buggy. (No internet connection with my phone while I was connected to the WiFi network, etc)

Just now, I looked at the Network Connections, and there are 3 LAN connections that weren't there before. (picture: [URL] ....) Are they part of the problem, and how do I remove those networks?

This coincides with the Network & Sharing Centre showing a number of Local Area Connections (numbered 3,4,5,6 etc) being created under Unidentified Public Networks. I have tried disabling the LAC's but they re-enable whenever I re-boot & I have the same issues again. My networking knowledge is very limited so how to rectify this issue.

Network / Sharing :: WiFi Suddenly Doesn't Show Available Connections

Sep 15, 2014

My fully updated Windows 8.1 notebook suddenly will not show any wifi connections when I click on the icon in the system tray (it shows "No Connections are Available", although it is connected, and I can surf and browse normally).

To connect to a new network, I have to manually enter the details of the network, and then it connects. This is something new, since previously it would show all the available networks, and allow me to make a selection (which is normal). What setting could have flipped do enable the above situation?

Network / Sharing :: Why Computer Turn Off Wireless Connections And Defaults Into Airplane Mode

May 27, 2014

The computer turn off the wireless connections and defaults into airplane mode. I had this problem with Windows 8. The option to easily toggle airplane mode on and off become grayed out unchangeable. The only way I found to temporarily fix the problem was to rightclick the airplane icon and then troubleshoot the wireless connections which would then turn wireless back on. I had the option to upgrade to 8.1 and I did and it fixed the problem for a while. It did happen again which is why I'm back on the web searching for possible more permanent solution for this. Luckily it only happened once a week ago and hasn't happened again. I was wondering if this bug was known about and if you possibly know of a way to fix.

Hardware Drivers :: External HDD Slows Windows Down?

Jul 16, 2014

I am on an i7-12gb RAM+SSD Asus laptop, running Windows 8 x64. I am using two external HDDs attached via USB. One is an external-powered 2TB 3.5" WD, and the other is a 1TB 2.5" 5400 rpm Matshita HDD.

I store my music and movie collection in these drives, and a few setup files for the programs that I use.My problem is, from time to time when I boot up my computer, I start my browser, Word, iTunes, even Snipping Tool, etc. or when I need access to some function in a program (e.g. language proofing in Word, some function in Photoshop CS6, etc) my laptop randomly needs to access one, or both of my external drives and read something from there. I hear the whirring sound from the HDD and then my laptop starts responding again. This does not happen all the time, but it happens frequently enough to spoil a good workflow a few times during the day.

My external HDD's are slow in access times, and the 2TB WD actually shuts itself off after a non-use period and takes 6-7 seconds to turn back on.

So this translates into me randomly waiting for 6-7 seconds while using my laptop.

This case has been the same since using Windows 7 and through a few fresh installs.

I want these two HDD's to just store my files and not interfere with my OS' working.

Windows 8 Slows To A Crawl And Freezes (plus Boot Errors)

Apr 10, 2013

I had been running windows 8 for a while, and within the last month I installed a new video card (Nvidia EVGA GTX560ti), and a new SSD (OCZ vertex 4 256GB). While still running Windows 8, I had been playing games, doing a lot of photoshop work....and other various CPU intensive things. I was editing photos one day in photoshop CS5 , and I noticed that the program became somewhat slow all of the sudden (basic tasks that used to be very quick and painless). The program eventually became unresponsive and had to reboot the computer. Upon restart I got all sorts of "boot drive errors", and unreadable boot disk errors.

However, these errors only seem to happen randomly. I checked my CPU core temps, and while doing the regular work I do on the computer, all 4 cores averaged about 92 degrees Celsius! I ran a virus scan, for something unrelated, and I checked the temps and they were spiking 98 to 100 Celsius!!!! While im just using the computer regularly they settle around 65-70. But if I do ANYTHING slightly intensive, I could probably cook dinner on my heatsink. I guess my main question is WHY am I getting boot errors, and why do they seem to happen randomly. I suppose the motherboard could be fried, im really not sure. This happened in the past, and reinstalled windows 8. After a couple days, same story. I'm almost positive this is a hardware thing. My first priority is of course to lower the CPU temps however I can.
