Network / Sharing :: How To Delete Homegroups In Windows 8

Jun 1, 2013

I have 4 PC's, 2 laptops and 2 desktops, all running windows 7 or 8. Somehow I set up homegroups or workgroups on each one over the past few years and each time each one gave me a complicated password during the setup which i neglected to record because i thought i'd never want to use networking. I move files around via usb keys and dropbox, and lately skydrive. Now, however, I do think it's time to set up a network for sharing files between the PC's directly via my router. What I want to do is delete all of the stuff i already did, and start over. I googled endless various combinations of how to delete homegroups, etc, but couldn't find out how to delete them. One result said that if all pc's leave the group, then the group goes away, but i was unable to find out how to leave a group. I'm not really a moron, I'm just a babe in the woods when it comes to networking my PC's, and the terminology is confusing. Is it possible to do what I want? you know, highlight a file somewhere, hit delete, and the group thing goes away?

Network / Sharing :: OneDrive Sharing - Delete Copied Photos From C Drive?

I want to backup my photos from my computer's D: drive to OneDrive. But when I start to upload them, it says those photos are also available offline. That means, all photos uploaded from my D: drive are also copied to my C: drive. But it wastes my space on the C: drive. All my settings are set to upload photos with online access only. I tried to delete the copied photos from my C: drive but it also deleted them from OneDrive. Is it possible to upload only to OneDrive without copying the photos to C: drive?

Network / Sharing :: How To Delete Old Network Profiles

Dec 4, 2013

I'm having some issues on my home private network (wireless). I have a wireless router, (2) PCs (8.0 and 8.1), (1) laptops (Win 8.1) and a new wireless printer. All the computers are able to access the router/internet individually, but do NOT show up in the Homegroup or Network tabs.

I also can not get my new wireless printer to show up at all....anywhere.

I have noticed the PCs are accessing OLD outdated network profiles. They then create NEW (dupicate) network profiles. ie... Router name - Silverbullet. One PC sees it, the other sees it but creates Silverbullet2 and another Silverbullet3.

Network / Sharing :: Can Delete Skydrive Duplicate Files In Laptop

Jun 29, 2013

I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.

But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).

For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.

Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.

So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.

My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?

Network / Sharing :: Internet Connection Sharing - Unidentified Network?

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.

My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N

what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?

Network / Sharing :: Unable To Save Changes In Network And Sharing Center?

Aug 20, 2014

I've been trying to set up an old Savin 9033 printer through the company's router, but I couldn't find the network it's set up on from any other computer.

So I pull up Network & Sharing, see that Network Discovery is turned off.

I check it, go to click on "Save Changes" and nothing happens. I click it a few times and it kicks me back to the previous page, nothing saved. No password prompt or anything.

I double checked that all the appropriate services are running (DNS Client, SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, Function Discoveryr Resource Publication, etc.) and made sure Network Discovery was allowed through Windows Firewall.

Network / Sharing :: Random Network Disconnect To Wireless Network Printer?

Feb 27, 2013

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.

Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.

Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.

The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

Network / Sharing :: ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) For Xbox Live On Windows 8

Jan 3, 2014

Okay, so in Windows 7 I am able to connect my wireless to my phone, and run an ethernet cable over to my Xbox. If I use the ICS feature and configure it under services to allow ports 88 and 53 UDP, it works fine. This also allows my Xbox to seemingly add to this list of ports as it finds necessary.

The issue is however, with Windows 8, although I can connect to Xbox Live the same way, it does not seemingly allow the Xbox to add more ports that it deems necessary. This leads to that NAT error message that I am actually trying to do this as a way to bypass it.

In Windows 7 this only works if the connection is set to Home (not sure about Work), but not public. I'm curious if the reason this does not work in Windows 8 is that Windows 8 does not have a Home option, but rather only Private or Public settings. There is some small setting buried deep somewhere that I just need to change to treat it like Windows 7 allows Xbox to treat home networks and configure/add ports automatically.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 - Operating System Doesn't Detect Network Cable

Dec 15, 2013

I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable.

With that being said, do not jump straight to the "Did you turn it on and off again" questions. Here is what I have done so far:

Hardware-Side: Cross-check the cable with another computer --> Working fineCross-check the wall plug with another computer --> Working fineTest the connection with the BIOS's connection diagnostic utility --> Link detected

Software-Side: Checking if Windows was up to date --> Nothing to updateUpdating the motherboard's BIOS --> Not betterUpdating the LAN's drivers with the ones I found on the manufacturer's website --> Not better

I am wondering what is wrong with my installation. It was working A1 a few days ago, except for the issues I re-installed the operating system for.

Network / Sharing :: Limited WiFi Network Connectivity On Windows 8 Laptop

Jun 9, 2014

I purchased a new Windows 8, Inspiron 15 7000 series - 7537 last December. I had been using a router at a hotel for the time, and it worked correctly. When I arrived home, I had a Belkin router, and i experienced network issues in that i could not connect to the wifi. I could connect with Ethernet cable. The problem was fixed through customer support eventually, but I now have a new Comcast router, and i'm experiencing what appears to be the same or a similar issue. I can access the internet fine by wire. With wifi, it says i have access to the internet over the internet icon in the bottom right, but i cannot access webpages. I can use skype, and communicate through it.

Here is the result from the ipconfig /all :

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:Windowssystem32>ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration

[Code] .....

I really need the wifi on this router working for this laptop. Let me note that it works on other laptops, so it should be an issue with hardware or settings on this laptop.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Network With Two WiFi Access Points

May 10, 2014

I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.

Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.

I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.

So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.

Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.

What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Pro X64 - Default Boot For Home Network

Jun 19, 2014

Unable to figure out a default setting.

Simply for the home desktop and want to share with other kit on the home network.

When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :

1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network."
2 )The reboot.

All works fine and all devices can be seen and read/write in accordance with the appropriate share settings.

Now the issue is when I next reboot the

Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" will default to "This computer is part of a business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work".

So I have to got through steps 1 and 2 again.

How to I get Windows 8.1 Pro x64 to default to the "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." on each boot without having to manual configure.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Network Connection Properties Not Saving

Oct 3, 2013

I have up until a few days ago been able to modify and save my network properties ok. I connected a new DisplayLink USB docking station that lead to an update of some sort. I believed this to be to do with associated drivers. I let this go ahead and it may well have nothing to do with the problems I have been having.

First of all I couldn't even see the IP parameters and kept getting an error as follows:

"In Order to Configure TCP/IP, You Must Install and Enable a Network Adapter Card"

The wired and wireless was working in environments where I could use DHCP so I was confident the hardware was ok. Uninstalling the drivers and then updating them has got me passed this problem so I can see and edit the IP parameters. However now they are never saved. I edit them, close the window, re-edit them and they are back to automatic settings! I need to use static settings in the office.

So far as I can see there are 2 possibilities:

1. I don't have permissions to save these settings, wherever they are stored. But I have administrator permissions. Where are the settings stored? I have saved them before. How can I get access to be able to save them again?
2. Something else is overwriting the settings. How do I find out what and stop it?

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Lists Some Cell Phones In Network

Feb 20, 2014

My Windows 8.1 Pro machine sometimes lists someone's mobile phones in its Network list. They disappear and reappear periodically. Yesterday it was showing a device names "jewel", which, according to its properties, was an HTC EVO ("jewel" is the internal name for that model). Right now it is showing "SPH-L720", which is a Samsung mobile phone.

The machine is connected by Ethernet to Netgear R6300 router, so I presume that these devices are probably picked up over WiFi by the router. But why are they picked up and listed in Windows Network list? Does all this have something to do with router settings? A Windows 7 machine on the same network never shows anything like that.

None of these devices are mentioned in the list of WiFi attached devices in the internal router pages, meaning that they are not connected to my WiFi. At the same time my own mobile phones are successfully connected to my WiFi, but Windows does not list them in Network. So, what could it possibly be?

Network / Sharing :: Media Streaming And Sharing In Windows 8

Feb 7, 2014

Does the settings for them go back to default (on) every time the modem is reset or the network name changed?

Why does media streaming automatically gets turned on? (I don't even have any public folders)

How can I see who is accessing which files through sharing? Is there any old or new way to check all the shared folders in Windows 8?

I don't want sharing settings to change when the connection, or the connection name has changed; how can I do this?

I only realized that sharing was on when I tried to rename and move a file. It said it is open somewhere else. It didn't show me which computer was accessing what? Can I find that out next time it happens?

Yes, I want to put my music into music folder, but that doesn't mean that I want them to be accessed by the network (As I mentioned before, I don't have any public folders -or somehow I don't see them [show hidden files are on])

When I click any library folders (or even any other folder, even in an external drive); stop sharing is always an option, but clicking it doesn't change anything, stop sharing option still stays on. When I click on sharing settings, I only see my username as the owner.

Any library (or any media file on pc) can be accessed this easily? Even without writing a username and password?
