I just upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. When I tried to set up my Linksys Media Center Extender, I just get a blank screen on my TV with no sound. Everything worked fine under Windows 7. Is Windows 8 missing the drivers for Media Center Extenders? Since my main use for this PC is recording and streaming TV shows, I am going back to Windows 7 until this is resolved.
I installed 8.1 rtm as an upgrade over 8.1 preview and was immediately able to stream live and recorded wtv files/programs to my Xbox Media Center Extender without error.
After a several hours and maybe 1 or two reboots, all video (wtv, avi, etc) streamed to the Media Center Extender turned black after 5-6 seconds. Audio could still be heard, but there was no video and my Xbox remote control functions would stop working. I could go to the Xbox Blade Menu.
I went back to a manually saved restore point and still had the same problem.
Then I did a clean install of 8.1 rtm and again, everything was working properly again. Approx an hour later video streaming to the Xbox Media Center Extender went black.
"Play To" Media Center Extender also had the same problem, only that video would go black after 2 seconds.
If I return to the Xbox home screen and "Play To" Xbox 360 - video steams properly, although expectedly the ff/skip etc would not work.
I noticed that when the video would play normally to MCX one of the two Media Center Extender devices was not completely installed.
One of the devices has the IP address starting with 192.xxx and the other starts with either 127...
It takes some fiddling around, but if I
1. remove the association of the Media Center and Extender 2. delete all Xbox and Extender devices 3. reboot the xbox 4. Reestablish the Xbox and Media Center association 5. Allow the devices to be found and created (sometimes the Media Center Extender w/192. fails to complete installation) 6. Then Disable the MCX in Device Manager that references 192. and leave the one which references the 127
I have had dececent success with getting the above to work, but Every time I turn off my Xbox or leave MCX I need to follow the above steps again.
It's been 1 day since my last clean Win8.1 rtm clean install and I already have am up to Mcx-11 user!
My current build is a clean (non-upgrade) Windows 8.1 rtm AMD A8-3850 AMD Radeon HD 6550D (MS WDDM 1.2) v 13.150.102.0
I have also used the AMD Radeon Preview driver Yesterday Win Update pushed an update to the 6550D
How I can set up a more reliable connection to Xbox Media Extender?
Laptop refuses to screenblank and also to go to sleep. I've tried the usual by going to Power Options and making sure everything is in sync there but not works.
Will the download work in Windows 8.1. I am referring to what is pasted below ...
"Windows To Go" Sleep - Enable or Disable in Windows 8
To Enable Sleep in "Windows To Go" Workspace NOTE: This is the default setting.
When i start up the system... nothing happens ... its just blank screen no words like...pres F2 for bios options etc. Just blank idk what happened it just happen like that after i resumed the system from hibernate ....
I tried removing battery and re starting still like that. The light indicators lights up in processing ... power leds both have lights ....
I'm in the middle of a struggle with blank screen issue, possibly corrupted exlorer.exe file (won't run). Wanted to try update from 8-8.1 but the Windows Store won't show up with the blank screen issue. Any thoughts on resolutions? I've done several malware, adware scans and antivirus scans. Everything comes back clear. Also, tried adding a new user acct, but get an error message and can't add. Thought the update might replace the needed files. SFC scan return non-fixable errors.
Windows 8 issue. I recently installed Windows 8.1 as a 2nd OS on my Windows 7 PC. I installed Windows 8.1 on a brand new Samsung A840 SSD, and am dual booting it with Windows 7 (installed on an entirely different drive). I am still using Win7 as my default.
The install went fine. After a few days, I attempted to boot into Windows 8 and after a few seconds of the initial logo loading screen, I was greeted with a blank, purple screen (the same color as my chosen color scheme). Rebooting into Windows 8 I was prompted to let Windows check the disk for continuity errors, but even after identifying and fixing errors Windows 8 just hangs on this blank screen.
I was able to boot into Safe Mode successfully. However, a normal boot always leads to the blank colored screen.
I used the troubleshooting options available by booting from the install disc - first refresh and then reset. Both ran successfully but did not fix the issue.
At this point I booted back into WIn7 and ran CrystalDisk. The SSD reports 'Good'.
The next step was deleting the Windows 8 partition, reformatting it, and reinstalling Windows 8. Windows 8 is on an 100GB simple volume and the rest of the SSD is unallocated. Again, the install went fine. After a few hours it crashed into an all green blank screen (I picked a different color this time). Now when I try to run "refresh" or "reset" from the DVD I get an error message that says "your computer could not be reset. No changes were made".
I will continue to use Win7 for 99% of my productivity/gaming/etc but I work at a college Support Desk so I'd like to think I can figure this out with a little collaboration. I don't have much Windows 8 experience but I'm seeing more and more customers all the time with Windows 8 laptops/tablets so I'd like to find out as much as I can.
I can't eliminate either the OS or the SSD as the problem.
After upgrading to Windows 8.1, I started experiencing a weird boot issue. When I boot Windows I only get a black, empty screen. As soon as the BIOS splash disappears the computer stops booting. No disk activity, nothing. My first instinct was to run bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot from the Windows 8 install/recovery DVD. This temporarily solves my issue, but the problem returns on next boot.
I already had this issue before the 8.1 update, but it only occurred sporadically. I would usually work around this issue by rebooting.
So, I turn on my computer and it shows the startup screen then the windows 8 loading screen then after that it just goes blank. Sometimes it crashes, I've tried to do a system restore, wipe( didn't work because I don't have installation media, just cd), and a few others. If I can get into my computer I will post crash logs.
Tonight I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 and everything went fine. I noticed that the right click was very slow and found out that it was my display drivers that were at fault so I upgraded them also. I then had to reboot and thats where my problems started. Not when I startup everything seems to go okay and I think that it is starting fully but I have a blank screen. I attempted to enter safe mode but was unsuccessful F8, Shift F8 and a combination of both.
when i start my laptop, the leds are lighting but the screen is blank.if i press the reject button of the cd/dvd driver in the first 10-20 seconds.windows will start properly.if i don't, the blanc screen continues to exist.if i start the laptop with the cd/dvd driver open, it starts properly also.i have disable the boot from cd driver but nothing changed.i am running windows 8 64bit.i have i5-3210 , gt 640m, 8gb ddr3.the laptop is nh532.it is a new laptop and i am very double times sad for this.i am afraid it is a hardware problem.
I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.
System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI Two Asus monitors
Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence. 2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me. 3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.
I have a xbox that I have used (successfully, for about a year) as an extender for WMC 8. Im not sure what I did, but I am now unable to connect to my HTPC running win 8.1 pro. I have tried everything that even sniffs of a solution but I still get the error "unable to find extender". I can use the xbox to watch Hulu, Netflix but no WMC. My PC sees my xbox, however when I try to "test PC connection" thru the xbox System Settings/Network Settings/Test PC Connection I get, "network connected" - OK, then "PC Not Listed". I cant access my PC from the xbox "video player" either.
Ive tried all the popular fixes, turned off firewall, enabled extender services -- only to have them mysteriously disabled as soon as I attempt the extender setup process. Same mysterious disabling of the "Media Center Extenders" checked box in the "Allowed apps to communicate through Windows Firewall". Ive addressed all the sharing issues I can find, still nothing.
I just reset my laptop and am upgrading to 8.1. This is the third time I have tried upgrading and every time it results in a blank black screen. I believe it has to do with video drivers. By a blank black screen I mean totally blank. There is no backlight and there is no cursor. I had this problem when it upgraded the intel graphics driver to the .3345 version so I went into safe mode and rolled it back. After the reset I uninstalled all intel graphics driver and used the microsoft driver. When I update to 8.1 I get the black screen even with this video driver. I will keep trying using the stable intel driver to see what happens.
The problem I have now is when turning on my laptop it stays at the Dell logo for about 5 minutes before continuing to attempt to load windows, this is in UEFI mode. In legacy mode, it loads past the Dell logo in seconds, but this does not load windows.
I am trying to reinstall windows with the Dell windows 8 Home premium disk. When the disk finally loads, it just stays on a black screen, and I've left it for about an hour and it will not load.
I have tried using Hirens boot CD (USB) to load Mini windows xp, but that does exactly the same. I can load Linux from the usb but not windows. However, I have never used Linux so I cannot do anything in Linux to attempt to fix it, as I do not know what I'm doing inside Linux.
When I leave my computer for an extended period of time, after returning the screen is sometimes blank. I know that everything is still on, the screen just won't come on. I know things are still running in the background because when I restart my computer by pressing the reset button (the only thing that works), when I boot back into Windows a few seconds later and relog into an IRC channel I was in before, my old nick gets ghosted. If my old nick was still in IRC this means my computer was still on and working fine until I hit the reset button - screen being blank was the only issue.
I've tried multiple things, such as hitting the "wake" button on the keyboard. I've checked my power settings carefully, modified them, but still no luck. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this behavior, it either happens or it doesn't, and the time period it takes for it to happen seems random. Browser session auto-recovery.
I just get a blank screen when I try to see "All Apps". Also, when I click on search and then apps, the cursor jumps out of the search box instantly when I type any letter, and then that screen is blank too.
I followed the tutorial on this site for scannow. When completed (no errors), I typed exit at the command prompt. I have only a blank screen with functioning mouse pointer. When restarting I get the hp logo, then the windows "please wait" icon for about one second then it goes black. I originally cloned windows from my sea gate 1Tb hhd to the toshiba ssd. I can boot from the hhd with no issues. Just won't boot from ssd. I would run the recovery disc but it claims I need 140 Gb to do so and I only have 128Gb.
After a update last night I put my password in and then the screen went blank all I have is the mouse pointer, I removed the battery and did the Sony vaio assist button I can put my p/w in then the screen goes blank I tried the f8 and f10 key but nothing happens ...
After installing Google Chrome and making it my default browser, I looked on the Start Screen and could not find a Chrome tile. The All Apps screen did have one and when I right clicked it, it indicated that it was on the Start Screen as it had the "Unpin from Start" icon. After trying various methods of getting it to show up, I did unpin it, which also removed it from the All Apps screen of course, then did a search for Chrome, started Chrome and then closed Chrome. When I then tried to go back to the Start Screen to see if there was a Chrome tile, I was greeted by a totally empty screen. I rebooted Win 8 and everything came back normal (I hope) but now with a Chrome tile.
On startup, all I get is a blank white screen. I can't see anything. But, I can plug in a monitor and do everything else just fine.
I tried twiddling the drivers, but maybe I did it wrong or overlooked the right one(s). I tried a system restore, but that threw an error on restart.
I even dove in with my screwdriver to make sure no plugs got knocked loose (don't worry, warranties were long voided).

After waking my computer from power save (monitor turns off after inactivity) all I get is a blank screen. Monitor turns back on but only shows black. System is still responsive (numlock/capslock still work and I can sometimes make it make sounds by pressing random keys).
After this happens, putting the system in sleep mode (with a shortcut on my keyboard), then waking it up from that restores normal operation. I tried hitting PrintScreen while on the blank screen and pasting it into paint afterwards, and it shows the desktop. So why is this happening?
I have a MSI cx640dx notebook the core i3 version and it came with windows 7 installed on it,I replaced it with windows 8.1 pro with media center and everything was fine, but when I installed the intel graphics drivers (either from windows updates or manually) it started to give me a blank screen on restart so I have to pres the power button to make the system go to sleep and start it again to get my screen back (this happens on every restart) but when I shut down and start normally that doesn't happen
I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.
My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.
Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.
2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.
3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.
I have an older setup (1366 i7 930) that has worked well for years with XP, Win 7, Win 8 and now running Win 8.1.
About 4 months ago I started getting every kind of problem : BSODs, audio skips and stutter, video hangs and blank screens (with mouse cursor still working), slow response, dropouts, logouts and general instability. These problems were at their worst when I was using older software and when the CPU was heavily loaded. The CPU temperature was never an issue and has been logged at well under 70C. The event logs showed multitudes of totally spurious errors but they mostly related to power faults and bad or missed interrupts.
It would take too long to describe the frustrating process I used to trace the problem but I have finally found a solution. My system has been working flawlessly for two weeks now and I have put it through the wringer.
In short the faults were all caused by the video driver for my Sapphire AMD 7970 card. I had accepted the Microsoft drivers as a conservative, but stable solution for my installation. This has always worked in the past. Microsoft puts stability ahead of performance in their released drivers (they say) and although they do stuff up every now and then I have never had any problems before.
Two weeks ago I installed the latest Catalyst package with the v14.100.0.0 driver and all of my problems vanished. I am amazed by the response and speed difference I am experiencing. I must add that I had reinstalled both my MS video and audio drivers before and switched them to minimal functionality with no success.
I had very bad experiences with Nvidia native drivers which is why I switched to ATI/AMD and MS drivers.
I Google a subject and get a list of sites, select one and read. To return to the list I click the back-button, the screen goes blank and I have to press the 'windows' key and select Google again which brings the list back on screen. Frustrating waste of time. How can I activate the back-button?
The problem happened after I right click on desktop > Graphic option > first thing that i cant remember what is it .. Then the screen suddenly blank ! (The system is still running).. and i startup with safe mode..it has no problem..
I disabled intel hd grahics 3000 device on safe mode.. and it work's , my screen is not blank anymore.. but without the intel hd grahics i facing many problem like, cant adjust screen's brightness..
What i should do? maybe reset the setting of intel hd grahics ? But how..if i enable the intel hd grahics device..it becomes blank again..

I have recently installed a new Video Card a Gigabyte GeForce 660 GTX, when I'm playing video's or if I open the Geforce Experience program from the task bar the screen goes blank for about a second then returns to normal, it always seems to happen when I get the program to check for updates. I am using the latest driver 320.49.
When I play games there's no problem occur so I don't think it's the card it's self, I suspect it's something to do with the program.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, the screen is broke so I use an external monitor which doesn't project BIOS or Boot up so I cannot see anything. I found a thread on here that adds the Intel Graphics Driver for Mobile 4 Series for Windows 8 which I supposed would work on 8.1.
The link I installed:
Mobile Intel Series 4 and Intel HD Graphics 1st Generation. I installed it and restarted the laptop for the GUI to start.
But as I restarted, the screen was blank. I tried cycling through projection modes as I usually do, but this time It didn't work.
I have no clue of how to remove the driver to as I cannot see anything on the external monitor as I've tried it on 2.
I've tried booting into Safe Mode but as I've said, I cannot see anything on the screen so I'm not sure where I am.
