View 9 RepliesHave windows 8 upgraded from a disc. 4gb memory 320gb HD. I change it back and it still comes up on the home botton. I do not like their homepage.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just went to a web site that I have been going to for years, and I was using the 'page down' key as I often do. I got to the end of the page, and I saw a "flash" - loading page, at the bottom of the screen, and the next page automatically loaded. I didn't have to click on "next". I just continued to "hit" the 'page down' key.
Is this the new normal, maybe coming, or just something unique to that web site. Because I like it. Using Firefox, windows 8.1
I have made a few changes to speed up Firefox that you see on Google in the "about:config" area. And I have added the "Fastest Fox" add-on.
If there is some setting I can do that would apply to "all" websites, I sure would like to do that.
I have 24 GB RAM. Windows 8 automatically allocated 6 GB as a page file.
In the past, on Windows 7, I had 16 GB RAM and I always disabled the page file with 0 problems.
I dont play games, just surfing and watching movies. Shall I disable the page file or set it to a fixed 1 GB Min / Max or leave it as it is?
I am upgrading to 32 GB RAM next week to to have dual channel in all RAM slots because now 1 slot is empty making the second RAM slot run on a single channel.
I signed up for a DNS service a while back. When I stopped using their service I removed their DNS entry from the ipv4 settings and considered it done (this was all they stated for install/uninstall, just update the DNS in ipv4)
At random, the PC will revert back to their DNS server. I have no virus (Malewarebytes Pro), my hosts file is empty.
Here's what I've done:
1) Removed it from ipv4 settings manually and reset to Obtain DNS Automatically
2) Open cmd as admin and ran the following sequence:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
3) Reboot
On reboot, everything is normal, anywhere from 24 hours to 30 DAYS later it automatically reverts back to their DNS servers. I am on a .edu domain. I do not have access to the router, but I never modified anything in the router. Why my PC keeps reverting to their DNS servers?
Just acquired my first win 8 laptop. I had a loaner win 8 and hated everything between the computer and OS. I really like this Lenovo but im still having issues with win 8. Mainly this computer and the rental one seems very bogged down. Everything from social media or streaming etc even scrolling down this forum page has such a Lag or delay. Is this typical for win 8, can i do anything about this?
the lag is a delay. everytime I would scroll down a page it would have a delay, or if i stream a video (I use chromecast) it is delayed and choppy. My Win 7 Laptop had zero issues like these.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 8.1 Pro and have just installed an 250gb SSD and also have a 1tb HDD. I have put the OS and various programs onto the SDD. I want to be able to have all data, for all users, pointed to save onto the HDD. (I will then get a 1tb USB3 HDD to back up the 1tb HDD - next step!).
I am getting very confused about how to make sure all documents/pictures/music/videos automatically get saved onto the HDD, rather than defaulting to the SSD. I also have user accounts for the family and I ideally want all photos/videos/music (but not documents) in just one location, so I end up with don't multiple copies of the same files saved by each user; they should all be access the same files.
I have 8 GB machine, 64 bit Windows 8 pro.
Windows 8 instantly uses up 45% after cold boot. There are some startup I know, but when added together there's no way they're taking up that so much space in RAM.
I am primarily a "slightly competent" linux user, I dislike UEFI, Win 8 and M$ (in that order, most of the time).
Ok, that's me .
New laptop, Windows 8 64bit pre-installed.
Is there any way to stop Win 8 automatically creating restore points, but still allow manual creation of points? Or at least "protect" important restore points.
I recently decided to restore a manual point to find Win 8 has deleted all of my points and replaced with "others". I realize I could increase the storage area, but I don't want that, as I'm always short of disc space.
I'm using an Asus N550JV running Windows 8.1.
Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.
Any way to force a process to become "Not Responding" for troubleshooting purposes, but I have not been able to find one. I have also been unable to find anyone on the internet who is trying to do the same thing as I am. Basically, does any way I can intentionally stop a process from responding?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I've been running certain programs on my computer, I keep getting the message, program has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This has happened to me in Internet Explorer when I try to play movies, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security and when I try to run Windows Experience index.
Some programs wont even open. My computer has been running fine since I purchased it 8 months ago. This started happening after a windows update a couple of weeks ago. I've refreshed windows 8 twice, ran a full system virus scan, ran malwarebytes and it found nothing. I also tried sfc /scannow and used dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health to fix component store corruption and fix corrupt system files and also tried gwscan from Hirens boot cd. I generated a system health report and this is what the report came up with:
Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, new printer/scanner installation, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes even writing a letter or "Save as" just stops responding. How can this be??? Windows says "we're looking for a solution", but nothing ever shows up. Is there no diagnostic that can identify the failure? Is it memory, conflict, what can be causing these annoying interruptions??? Mostly rebooting the system will clear things up.
My setup: Windows 8 PRO, CPU Intel i7 3.40 GHz 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, INTEL SSDSC solid state hard drive 223 GB (about one quarter full). I did not have these problems with Windows 7, or the Windows 8 pre releases.
I'm currently experiencing this issue and it's really annoying. I just bought this laptop for 2 months and it's been working fine. Then suddenly this problem started yesterday. Generally every time I open up a game my laptop will automatically switch to Power saver mode and it causes some lags in the game. At this point I would Alt+Tab to desktop and switch it to "High Performance". Here's the annoying part, even though I have set it back to "High Performance", the laptop still works as it in "Power saver" mode, I can tell because the game is still laggy and slow. I tried to restart the laptop and experienced the same issue. I ran a Full scan by using Avast Internet Security 2014 and didn't detect any problem at all. What should I do?
By the way my OS is windows 8.1
How do you make Windows 8 make Restore points on every system change without manually doing it yourself? Like drivers, programs, etc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite notebook less than six months old and running with Windows 8 and latest updates to date. My Toshiba Satellite will not auto. standy/hibernate, it will only do it by me executing it manually.
-All device drivers are up-to-date, according to Toshiba download site, including graphics driver.
-All USB devices have been un-plugged.
-I have done a re-boot of the notebook, several times, and it made no difference.
-I have turned on and off the screen saver settings.
-I have changed and changed back the power scheme settings.
-I ran the powercfg -requests tool, and it reported no problem.
I noticed when I ran the Toshiba hardware troubleshooter, it said to turn off the screen saver, but it was already turned off. I noticed in searching the net that other Toshiba users say they have noticed this too.
I also noticed that when I choose my photos as a screen-saver they take a long time to run, or sometimes not at all.
I have read that two reasons could cause restore points not to be created automatically:
services. msc not enabled
2-task scheduler off.
I cannot find system restore or restore points in either place and am not sure what to do in either. How to enable restore paints to be created automatically?
I am facing a problem enabling the file history feature of my Windows 8 Pro installation. After noticing there was no activity to my backup drive, I decided to check what time the latest backup was executed; this turned out to be 3 weeks ago. I formatted the drive and decided to try set it up again. Ever since I have been unable to make it work.
The backups are prematurely stopped. It takes about 10 minutes to copy 50MB of files and some empty folders to the external hard drive, after which it stops as if it were completed. Forcing it run again makes no difference, and no files are copied.
My system is a two month old fresh install. I have disabled my anti-virus software and installed all the latest updates for Windows and most software. I have moved my user folders to another drive through the properties menu. I access them through my libraries, when I select I want to restore files I see them, and some small files are actually backed up to the drive I selected. Therefore I do not think this is why the problem is occurring.
I have already tried slowly formatting the drive and checking it for errors and bad sectors and plugging the drive in different ports. After that proved unsuccessful,
I restarted the Windows Search service and manually forced it to recompile its index, reset the File History settings by deleting its folder in the Application Data directory, ran the System File Checker, and just to be sure rebooted my computer and reformatted the external drive - all to no avail. My error logs are full of failures due to trying this many times, but the one below is the most recent one, corresponding to the latest try.
- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
<Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-FileHistory-Core" Guid="{B447B4DB-7780-11E0-ADA3-18A90531A85A}" />[code].....
Is there any difference between these two settings, i feel like my computer is way faster with the second setting.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows 8.1 with the latest updated google chrome browser.
What happens when i scroll i keep getting squares, Like this.
It took a while to get a pic of these because they would disappear supper fast. Here is a pic of them.
Every 20 or so minutes I have to keep going into my mouse settings to change the Verticle Scroll speed back up to 4, up from the default 1. This problem has been occurring since I got this laptop in november last year, and I've been up for 2 and a half hours trying to finally fix this tedious problem, I'm starting to lose hope and it's getting to the point where it makes me not want to even get on the computer. My Dell Touchpad program that came with the computer is always turned off when the mouse is plugged in, so that can't be why.
There are two ways for me to change the scroll speed, by going into the Windows 8 PC Settings>PC & Devices>Mouse & Touchpad, and the mouse properties that are in the control panel. When I change the Mouse & Touchpad settings they change the settings in the mouse properties but not vice-versa.
There is no KH-whatever file in my startup list.
Synaptics drivers for touchpad are up to date, as is the mouse driver.
My mouse is a Engage Optical Mouse, I've had it for about 2 years and I never had a problem with it on my last computer. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron M531R-5535.
Text "Red Shift" during vertical scrolling? I've noticed it with Firefox 27.0, Pale Moon 24,3,2, and Operax64 12.14. The text on forums looks normal until I move the vertical scrollbar with the mouse. While the text is moving it takes on a red tint. As soon as the scrolling stops, it reverts to normal color. Pretty weird. Only thing I did lately was use a program to calibrate the Gamma.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI don't like the two finger scrolling on Windows 8 for Asus. It works decent but I still prefer the old fashions one finger scrolling it seems to be more fluid when scrolling through pages. For me it still feels unnatural to use two fingers; I want my Windows 8 PC back and toss the mac feature for two finger scrolling. I'm not sure why Asus added this because it really ruins my Windows 8 experience as scrolling is an essential function for workflow. I'll put it this way if one finger scrolling was enabled I would have a 10 out of 10 experience versus two finger scrolling I would have a 7 out of 10 experience.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.
Is there any way to disable scrolling on the start screen or change the tile scaling by a small amount? I've got a 1680x1050 monitor and when there's 10 medium sized tiles across the screen, it activates the scroll bar, but there's no need for the scroll bar as all the tiles fit on the screen fine and scrolling only shifts them by a few pixels.
How to change the number of rows and a scaling tool that didn't work.
