If I wanted to change all my icons in my computer to "large Icons" it doesn't appear to apply to all my other icons in different folders, isn't there an option where you can turn all your icons to large small or detailed ?

I have a 17" 1920x1080 monitor, and everything was too small, so I've change the display size to 125%, by default it was on 100% , and now some icons on the taskbar are blurry.
I don't want to change the display size to 100%, I just wanna make the icon sizes smaller. Is there any solution?
In my pictures folder, as well as all other folders that I have checked, the option to change the icon size larger or smaller is grayed out.
Solutions I have found use the options to change settings, however, my options are also grayed out so I can't.

i got a surface pro and i hooked it up to my dell u2311hm monitor. Now when its not hooked up, i like to have the display setting size to Medium - 125% or Large - 150% (default) but once i hook my mini display in, the dell u2311 looks like ass at Large. so i gotta bring it down to Small - 100%. Is it possible to have different settings for different display.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI quite often place files on my Windows 8 desktop while im working on various stuff and have a problem with icons I cant fix, for example: I have a number of PDF files currently on my desktop and my pdf program is foxit. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE PROGRAM ICON, just the icons of the files it makes. I had the same issue on win7 and i know I can change folder view options to "show icons and not thumbnails" but unfortunately that screws up my image icons.
In windows 7, "types" and "nirsoft files type manager" allowed you to change the file type icon from the thumbnail to whatever icon you wanted. These 2 progs plus another I've tried don't work in win 8pro?
Right now the color (white) blends in way too much with everything else on the page, so that it is very difficult to even see the category titles.

View 7 Replies View RelatedBig drawback with the Metro version of IE is that it doesn't seem possible to change the text size -- on a large monitor using the "Normal" version -- the desktop version of IE I can change the text size at will and zoom the image which I usually have at 150%.
The text size on the Metro version is FAR FAR too small for me on a large monitor -- can see myself needing a "White Stick" if I had to carry on reading like that for too long.
This whole idea of rigid window sizes where you can't zoom seems ridiculous.
Note here -- It MIGHT work on a TOUCH screen by pinching the sides but
1) can't test it as I don't have (or want) a touch screen when I'm working at a Desk.
2) The last thing I want to do is leave smeary finger marks over my nice expensive large LCD screen
3) even if it had touch - I'm sitting far too far away from it to make this a practical method of working to alter text and zoom etc.
(On a Samsung smart phone I don't have problems with text size by pinching the screen - but I'm NOT working on a PHONE when I'm at my desk with a nice large screen).
I am trying to figure out how i can change the cover art/icon for my DVD movies (mkv) so they dont all have the same default icon. I would like to change the icon to like a DVD cover for each movie so its easy to look through them and find the movie you want, not to mention it looks so much better.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new HP Pavilion 15 e073sa laptop with a 750Gb HD. I would like to mimic my Win7HP setup on my old Toshiba laptop which is to partition the C drive to around 150Gb and have the rest as a data partition. (Currently my new HP's C drive has only 30Gb used).
Looking at Windows' inbuilt shrink volume tool, it will only let me shrink the HP C drive to half the size (around 348Gb) due to immovable system files. This tool has a note to see the defragmentation report for more details though I can't discover more...
So: Using inbuilt Windows tool, can I shrink my C drive, then shrink the shrunken C drive again (and again?) to achieve my desired 150Gb C drive? (and of course then consolidate the resulting empty spaces into one partition)
Or is it better to go for a 3rd party software solution? I have emailed the support team at Minitool Partition Wizard and they tell me there is no difference between installing their program onto my C Drive to manipulate it, and using a bootable CD to resize and partition my drive, - thought they say that the change will be irreversible?
I thought the Win 8 File History backup feature looked like a good idea so I bought a 1TB external hard drive to use solely for backup. I was thinking that I would be able to store a massive history of backups on it but I can only set the size of the offline cache to a maximum of 20%. Why is it limited to such a small amount of space? Why not 80% or 100%? Is there a registry setting to increase this?
It seems to be a strange arbitrary thing to set it to such a small amount of space if you want to use a drive dedicated for the purpose.
No matter how many times I go to 'View' settings, every time I choose a new window (i.e. opening a folder) I am always met with a small-format window rather than a full-screen, full-size one. I also am met with random lists instead of 'medium-sized icons', which I have opted for and chosen as default in 'view'. Have I missed a colossally simple tick in a box?

I am really not sure how this feature works in relation to the old image and backups. I have partitioned a portable drive of 500GB for my backups and have started doing the file history. I am now looking at the advanced settings and see this
Now as I was not thinking of leaving my portable turned on 24/7 as I used to do a scheduled backup once a week so now I am a bit stuck.
The setting "Size of Online Cache"has also got me confused. I have set it to the max of 20% disk space.
What I was actually thinking of doing is to make my first "backup"of my fresh install of Windows 8 and keep this as a restore backup if I ever want to revert back to this point of my setup. I was then going to use another partition on my portable drive for my weekly backups as I did before.
On windows 7 if I right-click on the computer icon, it gives me all kinds of information. It tells me the type of processor, amount of memory, amount of RAM, etc. That does not happen on windows 8. What can I do to get that information on 8?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed mouse software on my 8.1 Pro laptop. The software starts every time I start my computer and shows an icon in the taskbar. There is one very annoying thing that it does, when I first login to my computer the notification icon for the mouse software pops up a window saying that it's running:
I opened Customize Notification Area to see if I could turn off notifications BUT keep the icon there (so I can right-click it and open the software).
I noticed there is no option to "Show Icon And Hide Notifications".
So the only way i can keep that annoying popup message from appearing every time I login is to hide everything. But then, as I said above, I won't be able to right click the icon and start the software.
Is there a way I can show icons but hide notifications?
I noticed when I was looking at the custom notification area window that there were entries for programs that I no longer have on my machine:

I was recently installing and checking out Window 8.1. Everything is going just fine and with stuff like Start8 and Modernmix i personally feel i can maintain my old and preferred workflow (so, for the rest i can enjoy any new features that are now available!).
Anyway, as i was installing some of my software (and migrating settings from Windows 7 for some of them)... i came to some game launcher i use for Arma 2 called PlaywithSIX.
I had to install it a few times and the update mechanism was a bit fishy imo. For example; i could not even select where i wanted to install the applications (no extra options nothing), it just went straight into my Program Files folder.
After my install debacle i decided to make sure the system tray icon would always be shown and configure it when i stumbled upon the following:
Appearantly the app made several system tray icon entries, for having been started from several locations.
Is there any way to clean these entries in regedit somewhere or something? I hate having double entries in there for no reason....
I leave my laptop on at night to capture updates etc. On my new HP Envy with win 8.1 by morning the wireless card seems to have gone to sleep and the signal strength icon is grayed out. The pci power settings are "OFF" and the power setting in Device manager are also set to NOT turn it off.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony VAIO VPCS11X9E and my screen brightness is at the lowest setting for some reason. Also, my FN keys for the brightness setting won't work. Any means of changing the brightness does not work, this does include the brightness bar when you go into settings.
I have tried so many driver installs, checked for any missing drivers or out of date drivers, but the only one that seems out of date is my Intel HD graphics which I HAVE updated, yet the Intel driver update checker says otherwise.
I have disabled AND enabled (just in case) the adaptive brightness, but it does NOT work.
I did have Windows 7 Ultimate running on before but decided to upgrade to Windows 8. Windows 7 never had any issues with brightness. Also when I load up, even thought I have replaced Windows 7 with Windows 8, it still loads up the dual boot screen asking me which OS I want to boot with. Booting with Windows 7 will blackout a few times then it will take me to the VAIO repair system. Windows 8 obviously takes me to Windows 8.
When the laptop boots up, the large letters or 'VAIO' are bright and normal and sometimes, but not always, when it gets to the dual boot screen, the brightness is normal. However, when this does happen, as soon as I move the mouse or click a button, the brightness immediately goes back down to very dim.
When it loads up into any other system or boot program the brightness is fine. For example when I go into Sony VAIO's recovery center, the brightness is ok. Also, if I boot into something like miniXP or a separate OS on a bootable disk or USB, the brightness is fine as well.
I have tried many driver fixes, but NONE of them work!! I have tried booting up into safe mode and trying to manually install certain drivers because that apparently works, but it does not make any difference at all.
I actually wanted a confirmation dialog box to shutdown when i press power button (physical) but I didn't got any luck so, im trying to trigger a application (shutdown apps) when a physical power button is pressed. if there is any hack or tweak which satisfies my need to prevent windows 8 directly shutting down when power button is pressed.
I am looking for registry editor or any other script to fulfill my need.
Windows 8 is literally taking 2 minutes to Boot!
I am also having an issue with not being able to change the screen resolution. I tried updating drivers. Resolution is set to 1024 x 768. There are no other choices.

I notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.

Issue: Even if I don't change process priority for the program, Windows 8 thinks he's the boss and decides to put it at "below normal", which has an impact on the performance of the program. If I change priority, it will just put it back to below normal.
