Maintenance :: Surface 2 Tablet / RT 8.1 - Clean Up Temp Files
Jul 24, 2014
I am using a Surface 2 tablet which is RT 8.1. Is there a program to clean up/delete temporary files. I have tried Ccleaner but it says this program will not work on this machine. I have tried to find a way to make it work but could not find a solution. That's why I am wondering if there is a program "somewhere" to clean up those temp files.

I have a small 64Gb SSD boot drive C:
I installed Windows ADK to enable EasusToDo imaging software to create a boot disk.
This has left 3 folders about 3Gb in size in my c:usersmeappdatalocal emp folder
I have therefore very little free space left on the C drive.
The folder attributes are read only.
I as an administrator user have full access rights (confirmed in folder Properties) but when I try to delete the folders the error message asks for permission from me to delete. I give this permission, then it refuses, stating Try Again as it need permission from me.
This computer does not recognise boot CDs even though the BIOS order is set correctly. I was hoping to remove files using an Ubuntu live boot CD.
Windows Disk Cleanup utility just stalls - presumably it also cannot delete these files.

Any way to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on a Windows 8 tablet.
Tablet Model is ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C2.
It came originally with Windows 8 32bit. I was wanting to know if there is a possibility of doing this with a Windows 8.1 Disc.
Now I know there is a way to hook up a portable optical drive with a cable called a USB OTG.
I was told by ASUS though i would not be able to boot from the optical drive like a PC or Laptop could and to be able to boot from this OS disc so i can do the install this way.
So is there is a way maybe by making a disc. image and putting it on it's MicroSD or running it directly from the disc, i am not sure how this would work wanting to do a custom install.
Question is there any differences with the Windows 8 OS on the tablet now, compared to the OS on the disc usually used for a PC or Laptop ?

When I install stuff like the Microsoft .NET Framework, and other things, I noticed a folder being temporarily created on my External HDD 2 TB . I guess since it's the largest partition with the largest free space Windows is using it for temp downloads or extraction of MSI / EXE files.
How can I disable Windows from touching that drive? it is very slow I want all temp stuff copied on my SSD

I have a problem with Windows 8. This morning when I went to check my ASUS Zenbook laptop, the PC wouldn't access the network, even tho I could see our home network was working. I did a hard reboot and returned several minutes later to find I had been logged in under a temp password and all the desktop files I had were in the trashcan. Here's the error message that popped up in the lower right of the task bar:
"You've been signed in with a temp profile. You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later. Please see the event log for details or contact your system admin."
When I try logging out and then back in, I get the same problem. One other note: During the login procedure, this text appears in the bottom right of the screen:
"Windows Update. Your PC will restart in 2 days to finish installing important updates."

I have an HP laptop (G6-2005AX) with the following configuration
CPU: AMD A8-4500M APU 4-cores with Radeon HD Graphics
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7640G + 7600M Dual Graphics
Memory : 8 GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM (2x4GB in dual channel)
Mainboard: Hewlett-Packard 184A
Hard Drive: Seagate ST500LM0 12 HN-M500MBB 500GB 5400RPM
I'm using AVG free 2014 as AV and did a full system scan - no viruses.
The problem is that Windows 8.1 (64bit, pro) boots up really slow - taking upto 6-7 minutes. After it boots up and, well I don't know exactly how to put this - let's say "settles down", everything works as normal. After getting past the password screen, clicking on the desktop tile takes around 1-2 minutes to boot into desktop, after that opening any program (Chrome, MS-Word etc) will take 3-4 minutes - but after it has "settled", everything works as it should.
Also, another curious problem I am facing is that once in a while, when typing my password and logging in, Windows boots into a temporary profile (no apps, blank desktop) and a message appears on the notification area that "windows has logged you on with a temporary profile" or something similar - I need to sign out, then after I sign in again, my real profile gets loaded.
I thought the problem of logging into a temp profile, I thought was that the PC was not verified - I verified it by going to Change PC settings --> Accounts. But after 4-5 days, I see the option of verifying the PC again.

bought a surface pro from a friend yesterday, it had been turned on before I got it so I thought I would reset to factory settings, all was fine until the reset was around 90%, then a box appeared saying "the computer has restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the installation". But when it restarts the same message pops up.

I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.

I can't get Windows 8 installed.
I have a new intel build with a brand new kingston hyperx SSD. I get through to selecting a drive to install Windows and have tried
1. Using the single unallocated drive
2. Creating new partition unformatted (this creates 2 partitions for me. A system and a primary)
3. Formatting the new primary partition (which always fails)
With option 1 it remains at 0% files copied on next screen and goes to "could not format partition... error code 0x80070057"
Option 2 AND 3 yield the same error.
When attempting to clean the disk through cmd prompt using "Clean" in Diskpart, I receive a "redundancy cyclic error"
System:
Asus P77V LX
Intel 3570k
Kingston HyperX 120GB
Kingston HyperX 2x8GB 1600MHz
Windows 8 System Builder DVD
I have previously been running windows 8 dev edition on a 32 bit drive but need to upgrade.

I couldn't repair/replace my laptop's corrupt files doing an sfc or dism scan and had to do a reset as I couldn't do a refresh. I thought my laptop was clean when I created my last system image, last month, but when it came to using the system image I realised there was corrupt files on there too so I had to do another reset. What checks should I do before creating a system image? so I know that as well as there being no viruses there are no corrupt files either. Check for errors in Event Viewer and do an sfc and dism scan?

it crashes randomly (no BSOD, just a total crash with a weird lag sound). And when it does, I restart it and I check my CPU temp ... it's around 55C so I guess the problem ain't overheating.
Weird thing is it crashes when I'm not doing much (listening to music on Itunes, browsing on chrome) ... I don't play much games, but it never crashed during one.
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R 2.0 with AMD FX 9590 8core 5ghz
Corsair H60
2 8gb Patriot 1600mhz DDR3 ram
ATI Radeon HD 4600
Windows 8.1
So yeah I know my graphic card is old ... could it be the reason?

I have HP pavilion G6 laptop running windows 8.1. Found under c:windows emp a folder with a very long alphanumeric "name". On opening this appears to be an OS installation i.e. it has the following files included:
Program Files
Program Files (x86)
Program data
Sources
Users
Windows
Being in the temp folder I presume can be deleted. However I cannot delete this folder. I get the message that says I require permission from the trusted installer (??) to make changes to this folder.
How do I delete this folder ??

The Windows 8 starts it seems that i loose the permissions to the temp folder. As a result some applications using that folder to launch (for example Google drive) fail giving me an error. Another example are some installation files not starting because the temp folder cannot be used.
So, i have always to go to temp folder and manually set the permissions to have all working.

I recently installed Windows 8.1 from scratch. After installing Office 2013, I'm getting this error when launching Word: "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable." If I try to create a new spreadsheet in Excel, I get this error: "Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space." Memory and disk space are plentiful and definitely not the problem here.
Also, I can't save or open files downloaded with Internet Explorer, which I believe is related (explained below).
I tried running winword.exe /r and re-installing Office, but the problem remains.
I've verified that HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders is set to %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache in the Registry.
Research seems to indicate that the Temporary Internet Files location in Internet Explorer (!) is the likely cause of the problem. Internet Explorer shows the Current location field of Temporary Internet Folders is blank.
I've tried changing/setting the Temporary Internet Files folder to both C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache and C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet Files, but I get this error: "Windows is unable to gather information about the location you have chosen. Please select another, or verify that you have access rights to the location." I'm running an Administrator account.
If I try to open either of those folders in Explorer, I get this error: "C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache is not accessible. Access is denied."
I've tried Taking Ownership of both folders. I've tried removing the Read-Only flag from both folders. I've tried editing the security permissions and adding my specific profile name (Administrators is already there). I still can't access those folders.

I have a Surface Pro which hard froze during a windows update and now will not boot at all. It just sits at the 'Surface' logo when you turn it on with the loading circles.
I didn't have a USB recovery key created and I have no access to another original Surface Pro (no stores have them anymore) to make one.
Every USB stick I created with a normal Windows iso's won't boot. My question is can a Windows 8.1 recovery USB made on a friends computer work on any other or is it machine specific?

Reset password on Surface Pro 2, they haven't used it for a month and could not remember last password they used. Built-in resetting option won't work because it will erase all user files they have on that tablet. I usually use Nordahl password recovery tool when i need to blank or change forgotten password, it worked fine for me on regular non-tablet Windows machines, both options - CD and USB boot.
I'm not familiar with Surface tablet, so i did online research on how to boot Surface from USB, tried all options, but was not able to boot it from USB stick (i used 3 different USB 2.0 sticks).
Here is what i tried: I was able to get into boot screen and disable Secure Boot Control, then able to get into Advanced Options screen, checked USB drive option. Tried 3 different USB sticks with 3 different password recovery software - no luck. Any experience with Surface Pro 2 password recovery? Either i'm doing something wrong, missing a step, or maybe older USB sticks don't agree with Surface USB 3.0 port? Should i try to plug in external DVD drive and attempt to boot from it?

I used Acronis to delete all partitions on my Surface Pro. So there is no recovery, C drive, nothing at all. Just a blank SSD drive without any partitions. Now the Surface Pro refuses to boot to any of my USB sticks so I can clean install an OS like I wanted to do. I've verified both of my USB sticks are boot able, as I'm able to boot my desktop computer to them in order to install an OS. But when I try to boot the Surface Pro Gen1 to the USB stick, I get a quick squiggly screen and then I'm dumped right into the system BIOS. I've made sure to power off the Surface Pro, then hold down volume- while pressing the power button, then releasing volume- after seeing the Surface splash screen. But it never goes to any sort of boot menu or anything. Just takes me right into the EFI BIOS.

I know that iTunes isn't available for Windows RT and I would think that this would be a big problem for most people, but I can't find much info about it (complaints, solutions, etc.).
Is there any other way to sync music with my iPod? With all the other hacks and ways to bypass things on RT I'm surprised that I haven't heard of anything.
