Maintenance :: How To Avoid PC Hibernating After Sleeping
Jul 28, 2013
I have Windows 8 and Windows 7 installed in my desktop PC and it goes into "hibernation" after a few minutes sleep. I quoted "hibernates" because I'm not sure this is truly Hibernation, perhaps it's some special Asrock hibernation or something.
After about 20 minutes sleep, the PC starts and then shuts off by itself, but when I turn it on again, you get a black screen first (nothing else, no "resuming from hibernation", nothing) and after a minute or so all appears as you left it before putting it to sleep, as if it had resumed from hibernation.
It happens with both Windows 7 and Windows 8. I'd rather it didn't go into hibernation, but remain in sleep mode.
I've tried all options in Power Options > Change Advanced power settings, so I'm sure it's not related to power options.
I think this has to do with UEFI settings or it's some Asrock feature, but I don't which, I've tried some.
I've already disabled and deleted hyberfil.sys
Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Pro3
Processor: Intel Core i5 3450

Since upgrading to windows 8/8.1 x64 i have twice had this situation when during boot up windows tries automatic repair & fails , every time i restart same repair fail happens , its stuck in this cycle , neither "Refresh" or "Reset" option works , . I have to do a fresh format & install , loose all my files stored in the OS partition , I even tried to recover the files using linux boot cd but the folders were inaccessible/corrupted .
I tried every solution i could find to make it boot including Unable to refresh or reset PC after Automatic Repair fails in Windows 8 but nothing worked .
This has happened twice in the one year since i have been using Win 8 , Is there any way to avoid this from happening i future ?

Recently I did a clean reboot(or something like that) on my laptop.
Now when I hibernate it and I turn it on all it shows is a blank black screen.

When I set my PC to hibernate, my understand is that it is being shut off.
After hibernating, I sometimes completely switch off the power by pushing a button a socket or unplugging the cord to save energy during a long absence.
I've always done this on the same PC when it had Win 7 installed.
Now with Win 8 (and maybe some changes in the settings), it's not working anymore, as when it is hibernating and I pull the power cord it does not boot up properly anymore afterwards. The result can be a BSOD with an automatically triggered restart, or that the screen remains black after the cyan-colored Windows logo appears and nothing more happens until I press the reset button.
Hybrid standby mode is activated but I am not sure if this matters given that I shut it of by pressing on explicitly on "Hibernate" and not Stand-by.
I'm wondering if it's just a Windows or Bios configuration issue (probably since it worked before under Win 7).
I don't know if it has any bearing but in my Bios "Deep Sleep" is enable in S5 mode, which as far as I remember just controls if the USB ports have power or not and can be used to re-activate the PC.
It would be good to restore the original functionality where you are free to disconnect the power while it is in hibernation mode.

For many years I've always hibernated my computer when I'm done for the night, then wake it in the morning and continue where I left off. For the past week or so when I wake it up I have no internet connection. I have run the self repair thing (I forget the name off the top of my head) which usually fixes any problem I have but this time it says it can't solve the problem. I tried Googling for an answer and the only solution I could find didn't work. That is to go into Device manager > Network Adapters, and disable "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power". That didn't sound like a good answer anyway since this did work before and now it suddenly doesn't.
My specs are:
Win 8.1 Pro x64, Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz, GeForce GTX 470, 8GB RAM

I already tried a couple of things. I restored the laptop 5 days back, but no result. Also I closed the lid feature has sleep selected for both battery and plugged in.

I was wondering if there was a way to avoid login when switching between accounts. I have things set up so I automatically login when I start the computer and when I awake from sleep.
But if my wife is using the computer and switches to her account, when I switch back, I have to sign in.
I could, I suppose change mine to a local account (like hers), but is there a way to do it with a microsoft account?

There have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?

I use my cell phone for internet access on my laptop, since it can act as a portable wifi access point.
The problem I'm having is that every time I connect, Windows 8.1 creates a new profile. So I started with "Phone access point", then I got "Phone access point 2" on the second connection, "Phone access point 3" on the third connection, and so on and so on, creating a new profile every time I connect.
Is there any way I can tell Windows 8.1 to use the same network profile whenever it connects to "Phone access point", since it's the same connection as it was last time. It does it correctly for all the other wifi access points I connect to: home, work,, the only one that's causing a problem is the phone's connection.

Sometimes the pc will go for 2 weeks with out an error other times it is every 1-2 days. I have Attached the Diagnostics information from the tool. I do not know if the issues are related of not.

I have an Asus UX31A with WIndows 8 Enterprise VL. Every time I wake the system from sleep, I hear the system chime as if a device is attached, unattached, and re-attached. I don't know what as it happens at the login screen and I'm not fast enough to see if anything appears in the taskbar.
After logging in, I get this window (see below; I had to remove a couple things I don't know if I can show). If I follow its directions, I restart and go about life until I put the system to sleep again in which the process repeats. As I write this I'm finishing a bunch of updates so perhaps that has something to do with it (I have a lot of Office and SP1 for SQL Server that I've been putting off along with a healthy swath of optional OS updates).

I've been trying to configure my brand new hp PC with Windows 8.1 pro to auto-sleep but I have been unable to do so. If it hit the power button or select sleep from the menu it will sleep, however.
I ran powercfg/energy and it appears from the report that this is the issue:
System Availability Requests:System Required Request
The device or driver has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep.

Why audio codec would prevent sleep? Is there anything I can do?

Having a problem with the Regular Maintenance waking the computer (Windows 8 on a Lenovo Q-190) to do its scheduled task as it's supposed to do. Here are the symptoms:
1. If I change the time for Scheduled Maintenance in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL be reflected properly in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Scheduler.
2. However, if I check the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time" in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL NOT reflect in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Schedular. Specially, I check the box to wake up my computer in the Action Center Maintenance Settings, but the corresponding checkmark is NOT reflected ("Wake the computer to run this task"), in the properties of the actual task in Task Scheduler.
3. I then put the checkmark directly in the Regular Maintenance Task itself ("Wake the computer to run this task"). However, at some point in the future, (not right away; I close and then reopen the task to make sure that it 'sticks'), the checkmark "disappears. Then, the task does not run at night while the computer is asleep, but runs in the morning when I wake the computer for regular use. At that point, the checkmark in the task is gone.

I deleted maintenance tasks in task scheduler (Microsoft>windows>task scheduler) because I didn't want to have automatic maintenance fire up when I'm working, but sadly... some shit got messed up. My computer starts using hdd at 100% if left idle, and then freezes and all kinds of weird crap that I'm almost positive have to do with me deleting maintenance.
which tasks do I need to re-create in task scheduler in order to have auto-maintenance once again. If you could just read to me all the tasks, triggers, and which programs they are running .

I had the idle & regular maintenance tasks disabled but they always re-enabled themselves. In a fit of madness I ended up deleting them but now when I open a folder with videos or images the thumbnails always display in a slow staggered way every time from left to right, If I then exit the folder & go back in they do the same again. It's almost like they are not being cached at all & are having to be redrawn every time.
The only change I have made to my system is remove Comodo firewall & install Private Firewall & delete the idle & regular maintenance tasks.

I have Automatic Scheduled Maintenance set to run at 3:00AM. I get to this setting by going to Control Panel > Action Center > Maintenance > Change maintenance settings. I also have the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer" checked.
However, I note that if I put my computer to sleep for a few days, when I wake it back up, Automatic Scheduled Maintenance has NOT run. I can tell this because my antivirus definitions are out-of-date and haven't been updated since I put the computer to sleep.
how to figure why it's not waking up for Scheduled Maintenance? Is it possibly a BIOS setting? Do I have to manually add it to Task Scheduler? I'm running Windows 8.1 Update 1, ASRock Z87E-ITX mobo, Intel i7-4770S CPU, Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD, 16GB RAM.

I found out how to add a task to the Automatic Maintenance that runs each morning. I use Geekzone's EPG collector to fill in the guide on Media Centre and I though it would be nice for it to run as part of Automatic Maintenance rather than wake the computer up again later to do it's thing.
Here's how:
Create an XML files in notepad and paste this in...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
<Task version="1.4" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2004/02/mit/task">
<RegistrationInfo>
<Date>2013-02-01T19:34:03.9529687</Date>
<Author>johnofe-laptopJohnOfE</Author>
<Description>EPG Loader</Description>
[Code] ....
Save the file then in Task Scheduler, import the XML and it will appear. Edit it from there further if you want.
I got this from exporting a task that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance and edited it to suit.
the thing is, I still don't know how it works! I haven't been able to create a schedules task from scratch that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance.
Other than plagiarising existing tasks to get what I want, how it's really done?
I have what I want, and it works great being able to run all the things I want all at the same time at 3AM each day, as part of Windows' ritual. Even better, if I disable it from waking the computer, everything runs when I'm logged in and Idle. It's fantastic.

I'm using Intel Rapid Start function, so my PC is starting from completely off to fully desktop in less than 10 seconds (no POST, no Boot ). But I must each time remember to stop "automatic maintenance", because if it is running when closing with IRS, then it won't start again. I can find the setting to change the time of running "automatic maintenance", but I want to deactivate it for ever!! I will maintaine my PC myself.

I'm playing watch dogs which needs 6GB ram on a 4GB ram PC.
I run compact tray meter and one thing I notice is that the ram usage never goes more than 80%. In fact, whenever it loads stuff from the HDD ( I could see HDD usage 100% and stuttering in my game), RAM usage decrease to 77-78%. VRAM is kind of healthy at only 52% of 2GB used.
I want to know why not all 100% of my RAM is used? Hardware reserve is only 145MB.
And why is the minimum system requirements for watch dogs a GTX460? I mean, I got a 645M, I can play it, my friends with a 640 and 630m can play it fine, our GPU temperature is just 80"C even after hours of playing.
