I took a snapshot using the webcam (via the Skype app) and it created a file C:UsersJohnDoePicturesCamera RollThe Lame Picture.png
It's been deleted for days (including the 'Camera Roll' subdirectory it rode in on).
Per recommendations elsewhere online: I've removed all the suspect live-tiles from the Start menu: Photos, Skype, Camera - and rebooted - but no way Jose. little thumbnail is still rotating through the lineup like nobodies business.
How do I clear the cash of that Photos live-tile?
I am setting the first of several Window 8 systems. On my first unit, I have a phantom "Other User" user show up at login, that is not a current user that shows up in the User Administration. It is always the default user the system tries to log in to at startup, but since it isn't a real account, it can't be logged in.
How do I delete it, when it doesn't show up as a valid user to be managed? I also have a single local user (no Password) and an Administrator account (well protected), and after the "Other Login" user login fails, ? can go back to all user screen and select any other login and they work properly. .
The main reason I want to use WMP is because it has playcounts, so after I have copied some media files I can see what hasn't been watched/listened too (going through my dvd collection and converting to digital) ....
A lot of files are on my old machine (Mac) so I copy them over and correct the metadata to make sure it's correct, few hours later I look at wmp shows the file size as 0 bytes (actual file is correct in explorer) ....
Is there anything I can do to avoid this (rebuilding library loses playcounts so don't want to keep doing this)? Or should I totally ignore playcounts and use the new metro style video app?

On delivery it had 9 Windows updates installed ( 8, dated Nov 13 and the last one dated 07 Mar 2014, perhaps just before it left the factory). My first priority was to update Windows. A total of 78 updates including the last major Windows 8.1 update 1 akin to a Service Pack - KB2919335 and all this took a lot of time. All updates went on well with no problems.
Now I find that Windows Disk Management lists two OEM recovery partitions D: ( What it was earlier, I did not notice but I presume it was showing one correctly since any abnormality would have caught my attention.)
Diskpart lists all the partitions correctly. And so also bootice. Now what is causing this and how do I fix it?
I find there is a Intel Manageability Firmware Recovery Agent - [URL] .... My own guess is some Intel driver/firmware may be causing it. As I said it is only a guess. I tried the update with it but so far Intel servers could not be reached though my internet connection is OK.
Some file types appear in File Explorer with the file name extension and others do not. For example in this folder the .DLL file has the extension shown but not the .EXE files. What setting is responsible for this and how would I get more consistent behaviour?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard and a installing Windows 8 on a freshly formatted SATA HDD. My BIOS see's the drive and has it second in the boot order, just after the DVD-ROM drive. It has a label with the drive serial number and everything, along with the drive being 'enabled' in BIOS. When I get up to the spot to choose what drive to install Windows to, its says 'No drives were found, please select a storage driver'. I found that it shows C: when I browse for drivers. Why this isn't working?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Samsung Laptop with Windows 8 installed. I have 2 partitions 200 GB and the rest whole drive as C drive which after recovery drive amounts to be around 700 GB. Yesterday, I tried Samsung Recovery to get a factory image of C drive. Firstly recovery failed twice and then the third attempt worked almost fine. Recovery said boot file was corrupted and it recovered. But when I opened my computer I had two drives, 60 GB and 200GB. The rest of the space wasnt there. I checked in disc management, Partitions map said C drive had 700 GB. But in the description it shows only 60 GB. The other partition 200 GB is intact. I tried doing samsung recovery again and again but the problem persists.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was upgrading to Win 8.1 pro with WMC, but when the download was just 5% completed, the net got disconnected due to power cut. When I restarted the system and Click on the Upgrade Tile in the Store, it goes to Download Page. And when I click on the Download button, it says Application is installed. I can't find it in My apps either so that I can click on uninstall and do a fresh upgrade. The download was only 5% completed. Now I am unable to upgrade.
PS: I googled somewhere and found that I had to empty the SoftwareDistribution folder is to be emptied. After doing that, now when I try to upgrade I get "Your Windows 8.1 installation could not be completed, something went wrong and the windows installation could not complete".
I'm having a little problem with my onboard audio, having just installed Windows 8.1 (clean install). I have an Asus P8Z77-V LE PLUS motherboard, which includes a "Realtek - ALC889 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC" onboard.
I have installed the latest realtek drivers; R2.73 from the official website.
Now, here's my problem: when I was using Windows 7 on this same machine, I could plug headphones in the front panel connector, as well as speakers in the green back panel connector. This would give me two audio outputs in the device manager/sound list, which was pretty practical and enabled me to output different applications through the speakers or the headphones.
Now, however, there's only one output, irrelevant of whether or not I have two outputs plugged in at the same time. They appear in the device manager as a single device called "speakers" (see picture). Instead of both having separate outputs, they both output exactly the same audio.
This PC" my 2nd internal data HDD shows an Optical Drive icon instead of the usual HDD icon.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOpening a folder in file explorer often shows it empty when I know it isn't! Also if I try to delete the "empty" folder, explorer reports it has found x number of files and is preparing to delete! If I quit that and look in the folder there are the files.
I also have issues with file explorer opening a folder and apparently scanning the contents - a green bar very slowly creeps across regardless of how frequently I've looked in the folder earlier in the day.
I have six drives mostly pretty full with a mixture of thousands of small files and thousands of very large images. Windows 8 file explorer seems to have problems coping.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not much of a VM expert. I have a couple of win7 systems running a WinXP VM that I installed manually, in all those cases, the virtual network has always just booted up and worked. Under Windows 8 Pro-RTM, I did a XP VM that I loaded myself (versus an XP mode) and it loads the virtual network adapter but it reports that the cable is unplugged
I'm not clear on what this means. Obviously, it's a VM so there is no cable to plug in. I'm guessing I'm suppose to match that Virtual Nic to the regular (aka Host's) NIC but I'm not see any options to do so.
On the same system I run windows 7 Ult and a XP install and the network loads up on boot.
Suddenly, when I try to access the control panel, all that happens is the control panel icon shows on the task bar but I can not open it. Nothing happens when I click on it. I've rebooted several times with no change.

If I restarted my computer it would work for maybe an hour then would happen again it seemed like if I deleted my cookies it would work for a longer period of time. If i reset the router or modem it would work for a bit as well. it has gotten so bad it stops working after about 30 seconds of usage now but after clicking my wifi connection and clicking reset estimated usage I was able to get about 20 minutes
If I plug into Ethernet into it instead of wifi it works for a while then has same issue I've also tried it on 4 seperate networks all were using the same model router ive since upgraded to a better router issue stays the same. Ipconfig sees the gateway and has an ip address but if I try to ping out or even to ping the router itself it times out Reinstalling windows 8 started the issue over could use the Internet heavy at first then progressively less as time went by No antivirus software, disabled firewall, disabled protective mode, all updates are done, did the netsh winsock reset

Four BSOD today, all with the same error. I can't think of anything that would have caused this. Memory test shows no errors with the RAM. Blue screen's have occurred both shortly after startup without any stress on the system, as well as after it hadn't been shut down for a while with lots open. I can't find anything that forces it to blue screen, seems fairly random (it's happened while I'm not even using the system). Dumps at the very bottom.
Much longer summary: I've got an Asus S400C on windows 8.1 that's about 6 months old. It's been really good to me but recently has seemed a little unstable,(or maybe that's me just thinking badly about it now! I would have said it occasionally hangs more than I think it should for a newish laptop) - but nothing I couldn't put up with. This morning it gave a BSOD with KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. In fairness it had been a while since it had been properly shutdown (i tend to just put it into standby by closing the lid) and I also had quite a lot of things open. I still wouldn't expect it to bluescreen like that though.
I think I've had the same blue screen once before, about 3 weeks ago. Today it blue screened four times in total - the three other times without me asking much of the laptop at all (only word, chrome and itunes open). Definitely not right!
I've run the memory test and it found no errors. Yesterday I replaced a qualcomm wifi driver with a microsoft one (both ones that were already on the system) but reverting back hasn't stopped the blue screens so I don't think it was related to that (it also was fine yesterday evening after changing). I've also uninstalled Asus Liveupdate because it's always saying it's "stopped working..."
It might be unrelated but 2 weeks ago I opened the lid of the laptop to find that I could move the cursor but had an otherwise blank screen (on, but displaying black except for a cursor. Normal resolution though!). I coudn't get it to do anything so held the power button, and when it turned back on it said it was doing automatic recovery, and checking the harddisk - it took about 3 hours to do. Afterwards it booted up and worked.
I've tried to investigate the dmp files with my basic ability to google and something that crops up is win8_driver_error. Also it usually says "Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe".

On a relative's HP laptop running Windows 8, she had a problem where burned CD-R audio discs showed up as empty and wouldn't play, no matter what program you used. This was odd, because it's the SAME CD-ROM DRIVE that was used to burn them. Immediately I suspected some kind of driver issue, so I uninstalled the default driver and then rebooted. When Windows automatically reconfigured/loaded the CD-ROM drive, the PC was finally able to see and use the media that had been burned on its own CD/DVD drive. Launching WMP resulted in music being played.
However... I'm still seeing an issue that has me perplexed. When looking at an audio CD-R or commercial audio CD in the DVD/CD-ROM drive, it always shows as containing 0 bytes. You can still see the track ".cda" files listed, which individually show a minimum of 1K size in the file listing display. Oddly, checking those files individually actually results in 2K shown for the details. I completely understand why 0 bytes free would show because the CD was finalized, but shouldn't the amount of bytes occupied by audio media show up with a particular byte count?
