Jun 21, 2014Where should .ico files be stored in Windows 8.1? I've found a suitable ico image file I want to use. I often work in Photoshop and want different visible icons for .tga files and .psd files.

Windows Cannot Access The Specified Device / Path Or File
Oct 15, 2013Since yesterday it seems that I don't have any control over my windows(8).
When I want to open a certain program Windows gives me the following error message:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".
When I press Windows button + 'X' - Command Prompt (admin) I get an 'Unspecified Error'.
I'm also unable to install new programs and to access the task manager.
My UAC is(was) already set to 'Admin'.
Copy Path In File Explorer Not Working
Mar 3, 2013I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

The Operation On (path To File) Was Started With Invalid Parameter
Jun 12, 2014One user logs in and all desktop icons have a pinkish "X" on them in the lower left and none of the icon work, AKA, you get an error message when you click on them:
"the operation on (path to file) was started with an invalid parameter"

Source Path Too Long - Attempting To Back Up All Steam Games Into One File?
Jul 21, 2014This happened when I attempted to back up all my Steam Games into one file. It crashed and now I'm stuck iwth a Folder within a Folder which as a really long name (basically about 50 names) I cannot delete the file. It's advising me to rename it which I've tired but fail miserably. I attempted to use CMD like this:
C:UsersName>DEL "?ESteam Backup Games"
?ESteam Backup Games*, Are you sure (Y/N) Y
Nothing happens.. the folder is still there.
I'm pretty much stuck and I cannot remove this folder.
I also created another similar to this but the Folders are empty and the name of both the folders is called "Steam BackUp Games 2" yet i can't shift+del it...

How do I get it out of my user, and back on a normal path?
Automatic PATH Change Desired
Mar 24, 2013How to use the path command. That's not the problem. This is, or used to be, a really simple thing to do. I want to add a new directory to the default path searched for executables, and have that done automatically every time I start my 'puter. Back when AUTOEXEC.BAT was not just a placeholder, I would add the path command there. Is there somewhere equivalent to this using the registry?

How To Change Default Apps Installing Path
Feb 14, 2014I always wanted to make a small partition for the OS and use the rest of my HDD to store my apps and files but I couldn't format my PC as I had nowhere to back-up my work projects and files I'll need. So finally, I got an external HDD yesterday so I jumped quick on my PC to back-up my files and format (Note that my DVD reader is broken so I performed a clean install from a Partition where I stored Windows 8.1).
Everything went smooth but whenever I want to install a software or something, it default path is on A: (A: is the symbol of the small partition where I installed the OS). I want to install all my apps and store everything on the C: partition (Which is the main partition that have 550GBs).
I already changed the ProgramFilesDir's on the Regedit but whenever I want to install a software it still shows up as "A:" and even after manually changing it to C: the software doesn't lunch.

I'm also having another problem, after installing Windows 8.1, when my PC boots up it asks me from where I'd like to boot (Windows 8.1 or Windows 8). I want to delete that Windows 8 thing so it automatically boots on Windows 8.1.

Feb 8, 2014Purchased a new plug and play 2 TB external hard that is not showing up as an icon in My Computer in Windows 8. It shows up in Devices and appears to be working properly. Driver is up to date. When I go to Disk Management the external is also recognized there but when I right click on the partition window to assign the external HD a drive path letter the drop down menu selection required to do so is greyed out and I am unable to perform the function. Uninstalled the USB driver for the device and re-installed and still nothing. I assume that when I activated Windows 8 on this new laptop I running as an administrator. Checked the unit out on my old laptop which is running Windows 7 and the same problem occurred. Perplexed.

Nov 23, 2013I have to PC's that belong to the same homegroup. When I go to explorer, there is a delay before the other PC shows up and yet another delay when I select to browse that PC. If I close and go back I'll often get this error code and then there are time when I get the code on the first try. These PCs are running Windows 8.1 Pro and powered on 100% of the time. I noticed this nonsense while on Windows 7 as well.

Feb 9, 2013I don't know how I did it but I got both Windows 7 File Recovery and Windows 8 File History active at the same time. I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?

By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).

May 14, 2014Turned the PC on this morning and all my files (audio , picture and video) now have the file type at the end of the file name so instead of cars42 it reads cars42.mpg same for all other file types, Why?
Also, had 2 new desktop icons "Desktop.ini" which open in wordpad as some directory log. But now every folder now contains a desktop.ini file some have thumbs.db file. I have not changed any file specs, it just appeared today. I have many thousand files and need them to be short for work, i don't want the added .mpg,.jpg, .mp3 etc added. Do i just system restore? How did this all happen though, Was it an update? Also, Another seperate issue my PC takes several minutes to shut down though this has happened for most of the time i've had this PC which is only 3 months.

Command Used To Make File System And Hidden File No Longer Working
May 29, 2014The attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit

File Explorer Zip File Icon Under Share Tab Not Active
Dec 29, 2012When in file explorer the zip icon under the share tab is not active. When I click on a simple folder, it does not highlight. If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. Is this something that need to be activated. I can un-zip a fle from the view tab.

Jun 3, 2013I have an issue running a program that is contained in a self extracting zip that is supposed to run automatically.
The SFX files unzips the contents to a folder on my hard disk (no problem), but then tries to run another program (installer.exe) that is located in the extracted folder.
The program fromm inside the SFX runs fine if I set the compatibility to XP manually, but the problem is that the the SFX extracts the files to a different location each time it is run.
Is there a global way to make a program (installer.exe) run in compatibility mode wherever it exists?

Aug 1, 2014Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
