View 8 RepliesI always wanted to make a small partition for the OS and use the rest of my HDD to store my apps and files but I couldn't format my PC as I had nowhere to back-up my work projects and files I'll need. So finally, I got an external HDD yesterday so I jumped quick on my PC to back-up my files and format (Note that my DVD reader is broken so I performed a clean install from a Partition where I stored Windows 8.1).
Everything went smooth but whenever I want to install a software or something, it default path is on A: (A: is the symbol of the small partition where I installed the OS). I want to install all my apps and store everything on the C: partition (Which is the main partition that have 550GBs).
I already changed the ProgramFilesDir's on the Regedit but whenever I want to install a software it still shows up as "A:" and even after manually changing it to C: the software doesn't lunch.

I'm also having another problem, after installing Windows 8.1, when my PC boots up it asks me from where I'd like to boot (Windows 8.1 or Windows 8). I want to delete that Windows 8 thing so it automatically boots on Windows 8.1.
How to use the path command. That's not the problem. This is, or used to be, a really simple thing to do. I want to add a new directory to the default path searched for executables, and have that done automatically every time I start my 'puter. Back when AUTOEXEC.BAT was not just a placeholder, I would add the path command there. Is there somewhere equivalent to this using the registry?

Driver is up to date. When I go to Disk Management the external is also recognized there but when I right click on the partition window to assign the external HD a drive path letter the drop down menu selection required to do so is greyed out and I am unable to perform the function. Uninstalled the USB driver for the device and re-installed and still nothing. I assume that when I activated Windows 8 on this new laptop I running as an administrator. Checked the unit out on my old laptop which is running Windows 7 and the same problem occurred. Perplexed.

I was happily using file history, it was backing up to my G partition, which is located on my second hard drive (both drives are internal)but now I get error message:
I think the problem is that this partition got added to my user, that's what the network path shows:
How do I get it out of my user, and back on a normal path?
My new laptop (Dell Inspiron 15RSE, 1TB @ 5400rpm, 8GB, i5-3230M@2.60GHz, AMD Radeon HD 7730M) is using the Google drive app to sync files between my Google account and my laptop. but it's using 100% of the disk speed and killing the performance of everything else.

I've sync'd my google contacts with the people contacts in 8.1. On initial setup everything transferred ok. To test the link I then added a new contact in google to see if it would sync with the people contacts. So far it hasn't. How often does the people app update with google?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 on a separate hard disk plugged into a Windows 7 machine, ultimately of course resulting in a dual boot machine - with 7 on C: and 8 on D:. I added BOOTMGR to the Windows 8 drive (with bcdedit) and have removed the 7 drive leaving only the fresh Windows 8 drive in the PC.
In Windows 8, I can see that the system drive is still D: - 8 doesn't show itself as C: at all, like my Google search results said it should.
I tried changing the drive letter to C from diskmgmt.msc but I get an error saying: "Bad parameter".
Now what's that all about? How to change the system drive into C?
I've already tried the whole regedit thing where I changed ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir from C: to E:
I've only got a 60GB SSD drive where Windows 8 is installed but I've got a 2TB HHD where I want to install all new programs.
My SSD is now full and I can't download app updates or update to 8.1 due to lack of space.
Would it be easier to move windows onto my HDD? And if so, how do I do that?
I've installed Windows 8 starting the installer from Windows 8 RP and I've just noticed that it picked up the drive letters from the old system. Now my system drive is Y instead of C , because in the old system that partition was Y. I have a VHDX which I sometimes boot from and sometimes use as a VM in Hyper V. It has Windows installed on the default C: drive.
This is somewhat confusing as the C: may be the original C: drive or the VHDX C: drive (with the original C: drive renamed to H: in my case). I want C: to always be the native boot and T: (for example) to always be the boot for the VHDX.
Can I change the VHDX to have Windows installed to say T:? I was thinking of renaming all instances of C: to T: in the registry and updating BCDEDIT. It is not possible to change system disk in disk management.
If this is not possible can I re-install windows on the VHDX and specify a different letter and C:?
This is how it looks when booting from VHDX:
Code:
DISKPART> list disk Disk ###
Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 465 GB 1024 KB
Disk 1 Online 931 GB 31 GB *
Disk 2 Online 483 MB 0 B
Disk 3 Online 65 GB 381 MB
I tried to change the drive letter because it wont appear, but it didnt work. I have tried the CMD method with the volumes but the volume did not show up. It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C: drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:users. Not even with administrative permission.

View 19 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new SSD and did a fresh install of windows going from Windows 7 to 8.1.
I simply took out my old SSD and put in the new one, and installed windows 8.1 pro from a USB stick onto the new ssd.
2 existing HDDs were left on there, I'm also replacing them but I want to format them first to remove all data.
Disk 1 is the new SSD that windows was installed on. It is "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Drump, Primary Partition)"
Disk 2 is the drive I want to reformat and replace, it is "Health (System, Primary Partition)"
How do I make the C drive (Disk 1) the System disk?

i want my HTML webpage i created to load a specific file from another folder on my Drive. When i move it to another pc, the path and name changes, and i have to manually change it to.
So my Question: Can i make it auto change the C:UsersYannicDesktopWebsiteAddons to for example C:UsersOMGDocumentsWebsiteAddons?
So that i auto changes the path for me. It only uses the WebsiteAddons path and detects the rest like C:UsersYannicDesktop itself?
I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

When I want to open a certain program Windows gives me the following error message:

I'm also unable to install new programs and to access the task manager.
My UAC is(was) already set to 'Admin'.
