Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".

Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?

How To Make Backup For 6 TB Of Data

Nov 10, 2012

I need to figure out a back-up strategy for 6 TB of data. Docs/Media/Work.

Currently, I'm back-up up to external hard drives but this only covers me for onsite backup, plus, is a real pain to figure out what is on each disc.

Ideally, I'd live to have the data in the cloud as well backed up on premise.

Cloud backup of this size is practical? I was looking at CrashPlan, loading this much to them?

Also, is there a better way I can backup on site? Software/Media wise.

Windows 8 - Backup Data With USB Stick 32gb?

Jun 9, 2013

I want to back up Windows 8 but in neither book do they say that you can use a USB stick or CDs only an external hard drive or a network. I've got an external hard drive that backs up my desktop (XP) can I use this as well for Windows 8 or should I just get another external hard drive solely for Windows 8 or can I use the USB Stick 32gb that I already have?

Windows 7 Backup And Restore In 8.1 RTM

Sep 15, 2013

I installed Windows 8 and noticed it still had a version of Windows 7 Backup & Restore.

When I installed Windows 8.1 RTM, it looks like they removed it. I've been using it on Windows 7 x64 for a while and it has saved my skin a few times.

I did a Google search and basically found that if you install Windows 8 first, then upgrade to 8.1 RTM, it leaves Backup & Restore available. I want to install 8.1 RTM directly, is there any way to install Backup & Restore or keep it somehow?

Maintenance :: Partition Based Backup / Restore?

Sep 14, 2013

I have a question on ability to restore from an image based backup with a Win 8 compatible backup program (Acronis 2014 Premium), and not fully familiar with EFI. System is preinstalled Windows 8 on Asus F75 laptop, so disk is GPT.

Here are the partitions:
1. 300 MB EFI System Partition, FAT32
2. 900 MB NTFS Recovery Partition (would seem to be the MS Reserved partition)
3. 279 GB NTFS OS Partition
4. 398 GB NTFS Data Partition
5. 20 GB NTFS Recovery Partition

Forgetting about the 20 GB Recovery partition and the Data partition, if I wanted to return to a previous point in time for the OS, would I restore the OS partition (3), the MS Reserved Partition(2), AND the EFI System Partition, or would restoring the EFI System Partition not normally be done or recommended?

Debugging :: BSOD On Windows 8.1 - No Backup / Restore Points

Feb 26, 2014

I have the famous blue screen of death for the first time. I am using windows 8.1. Every time I try to boot into my rig, it says that:"windows has encountered some problems and need to restart". I am using another computer to write this message but most of all I have absolutely no clue how to resolve the issue. Restore Points were turned off in the rig to save space - Not my idea but it is what it is I have no back up - I am starting my rig and as soon as I get to the log in screen, the unit restart to a blue screen. I have a couple of options but most of them can't since I have no back up and no restore point.

When the rig restarts, I land on a blue page with 1 continue 2 troubleshoot 3 turn off your PC I choose 2 (because of tools). Then I have: 1 Refresh you PC: I need the refresh more than my PC 2 Reset your PC. It says if you want to remove all your files. Definitely not what I want to do. 3 Advanced options I choose 3 and then I get: 1 System Restore: No restore point so useless 2 System Image Recovery: No backup so useless 3 Start Up Repair: Tried that but no go 4 Command prompt: Tried that but I have no clue on how to move forward once on command prompt. 5 Start Up Behavior I picked that one and went option 1 to 4. 4 being the option that allowed to log into the unit in safe mode. Once I am in Safe Mode what should I be doing ?

Maintenance :: Win 8 Will Not Restore From Backup - Error Code 34 At Boot

Mar 30, 2014

I'm having a problem trying to restore Win 8.1 after a crash. All I get is a blue screen with an error code.

I finally deduced that I was having a hardware problem with my beloved SSD (weird glitches and erratic behavior, occasional recognition errors in BIOS, and finally I/O errors when trying to restore from backup), so I pulled it out, and temporarily replaced it with a spare HDD of slightly larger size. The backup/restore program I use is Paragon, and it has worked flawlessly for me for some time, including when I migrated Win 8.0 to that SSD over a year ago. So I pulled up the last full-disk backup (from 4 weeks ago) and did a Restore to the replacement HDD, but the resulting installation will not boot. I've tried it several times, including using a different archive, and each time I get a blue screen saying "Your PC needs to be repaired", with an error code 0xc0000034.

What is this error code, and how do I go about fixing the problem? Is there some kind of issue with restoring an SSD backup to an HDD? (I know there is something about the partition alignment which may be different, for instance.) This program worked just fine in the opposite direction, meaning restoring a backup of an HDD to the SSD.

I might have been able to use the recovery media to fix the problem, if I had the current media... unfortunately, the disk I created was from prior to the 8.1 upgrade, and it won't work anymore. My mistake. But short of a clean install back to 8.0, and then another upgrade to 8.1.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 System Backup Image Restore Error

Apr 17, 2013

My windows 8 pro install messed up n i have almost 2.8tb of stuff on my drive on a 3tb hd. I have an identical hd as a backup which i have (an apparently successful) a backup of my system from a couple of weeks ago on. I had set the system to do scheduled backups of the system (set to backup a system image of efi partition and c. There were a few times where i was trying to get other things done and the systemwas running slow so i cancelled the backups when i noticed them running. The software stopped the backups (seemingly successfully).

As i say my system messed up - i came home to find out it was no longer downloading (as i had left it doing when i went to work) but was on a blue screen (bsod?) saying the system needs to be restarted. Since then it didnt work well at all and after dskchk reported that several sectors were damaged so it was moving data to spare sectors (or whatever it generally reports when this happens) there were a lot of files messed up or reported as deleted when doing a file recovery scan with recuvva.

So i decided to restore the backed up system image from the other hd. Incidentally i tried mounting the vhdx backup image from that hd via windows explorer which then reported "the disk needs formatting" and didnt get any success mounting via disk management either (it mounted in the app but didnt show up on windows explorer and if i tried to access info on it via disk management it reported the same"disk needs formatting prompt".

So when i booted my win 8 dvd it didnt work cos the dvd wasnt an efi booting version so i had to boot from a usb version with the efi bit included.

I formatted the system drive and chose to do an image restore. It started doing the restore (apparently) but every time i came back to it later i had the follwing error:

"Re-image your computer

The system image restore failed.

Error details: The requested system device cannot be identified due to multiple indistinguishable devices potentially matching the identification criteria Ox80073B92"

It took me so long to set up my system n i have a lot of my own data on there too. The system drive I formatted was created in diskpart and then re formatted with "format" command (as it created the disk in raw mode) so now it is ntfs mode (uncompressed).

Setup Installation :: Backup And Restore User Settings In Windows 8.1?

Jan 13, 2014

I used to use Windows Easy Transfer to backup my settings and files before reinstalling/reimaging...etc - now that doesn't exist, and File History really doesn't cut it when it comes to apps and settings.

A system image really won't work either, as I need to reinstall windows 8.1 on a new system with different partitioning...etc.

Are there any Windows 8.1 native tools that will do it? If not, are there any freeware apps that perform the equivalent?

I have checked out Paragon Backup and Recovery (more all-or-nothing) and D7 (freeware version doesn't have automated restore - but it does create registry dumps...hmmm) but neither seems to work as simply/well as WET used to.

I have tried just saving the User profile folder, but unfortunately, that doesn't save anything that's in the registry (outlook profiles, app settings...etc).

Maintenance :: Upgraded To 8.1 - Backup And Restore Center Broken / Gray Icons

Oct 22, 2013

I upgraded to 8.1 this past weekend and it went just fine, however now the the Backup and Restore Center and Create Recovery Disks options are busted. Both icons appear in my app list as generic grey document icons, and if I click either of them I'm brought to the desktop and then...nothing.

I use BRC for my daily backups so I'm obviously concerned that it's not working. I tried searching for a way to reinstall these programs, but as they're part of Windows I wasn't surprised to not find anything. BRC was working fine for me prior to the upgrade so I'd hate to have to buy a third party solution now.

Apps / Software :: Data Backup / Mirror Software To Replace Syncback Free

Aug 5, 2013

I have been using Syncback SE Free for a long time now with Win7. It works well. I like the mirror function and the ability for syncback to detect small changes and allows you to view different files. When I use the mirror function in syncback, it scans the drive/folder and only copy/delete the differences leaving the rest of the files intact.

I have one main PC as my work pc, and I rotate between 2 different PC's (win 7 pro laptop and win 8 pro desktop). So I like all files on each pc to be current. Think of it as dropbox but offline with tons of data. Currently I have an external hd which I use as an intermediary between the "current" pc and the "older" pc.

After I upgraded to win 8 pro, I noticed that I can do a complete backup with syncback, but I cannot use the mirror function. Syncback does not work in deleting files either from source or target hard disk. It can detect the file changes, but unless I delete the file at the target drive, it will not copy to the target drive.

Any mirroring software which can replace syncback free which works for windows 8 pro desktop and my windows 7 pro laptop? I have tried contacting the people behind syncback (2brightsparks), and they have a knowledge based which does not tell much. It seems that windows is getting stingy with the read/write options. Following the KB discussion on syncback yields nothing in fact it is too convoluted.

I don't mind if it is a network/ethernet solution (not online storage like dropbox-but using ethernet wires) or my solution which is using an external hd as long as all my work computers are "current".

Files Created On Win 7 Data Drive Not Seen On Win 8

Apr 12, 2013

I use an internal data drive for most of my data. In win 8 the drive is E and I've created several folders and populated them with data. I then rebooted my machine to a Win 7 pro system and added a folder and some data to the E drive. No issues.

When I go back to Win 8 i can't see the folder and files I created on the E drive from Win 7.

I haven't gone back to Win 7 yet to see if they are there, but I would be willing to bet that I will see them in Win 7. How do I resolve?

Manually Entering Data And Renaming Files?

Sep 10, 2013

I've recently got a new laptop with windows 8. I am in the process of trying to upload my cd collection to my computer. Some of my cds are old mix disks that when ripped by windows media player do not have all of the information properly loaded such as artist/album/etc... So I started manually entering the data and renaming the files, this is where the problem comes.

Sporadically the laptop will erase/forget the information I've entered into the song files and will reorganize them into a different folder. It likes to send them to an "unknown artist" folder.I am entering the data by right clicking the file, selecting properties, and in the details tab is where I type everything in.

Maintenance :: Can't Access Backup Files

Sep 13, 2013

My prior pc had some major issues (win7) while I had an external WD backup drive attached. During my troubleshooting I had reinstalled win7 and hooked my backup drive back onto the system. At the time I had not taken the time to restore or take ownership of the backup drive/files. It ran fine for a while with backups occurring regularly when finally it had major motherboard issues at which point I gave up and purchased a new Dell PC with Windows 8 (one I'm using now).

After setting it up I proceeded to connect the external backup drive and restore the folder I really needed as it contained all the photos, files, music, etc from the old pc. After doing so I was able to open/view the files that were backed up on my old pc AFTER I had reinstalled win7 but could not view the older backed up files/images etc. I then used the take ownership steps in this tread but this did not appear to work either. When I attempt to open the restored files/folders from my prior pc that are older I only get a default image of the Windows 8 icon for that file. get access to all my backed up files?
