Once something opens, even from desktop, it doesn't have a little red x in the corner and there doesn't seem to be a way to close it and return to where I was before. I can only either hit the windows button and go back to the page with all the apps, or swipe it down and do the same. But say I'm on desktop, I've got the internet open and I open up my pictures and double click a picture to see it larger- it then fills the whole screen and there's no way to go back to my desktop and what I was doing by just CLOSING it, rather I have to go back to the app page and then click on deskptop. Is there a way round this?
In IE 11, if I click on a link on a page, then click the back arrow to leave that page, and go back to the original page, it takes me to the top of the original page, rather than were I was on that page. I think there must be a setting that controls this, but I can't find it.
I am a long time user of XP and in the past year have taken the plunge into 8. Whenever I delete a folder in XP, if that folder is open in an explorer window, the window automatically closes. When I delete a folder that has a window open in 8, the window simply navigates to the default explorer location. When I an doing folder maintenance, I am basically ending up with a whole bunch of open windows.
Any setting I can change to make the window of a deleted folder close automatically?
When a window is open and an attachment (to view pictures) or any additional window is open, i can not close the window "pane" i go to the upper left hand corner and try to drag it to the bottom but sometimes that wont work, another one was when the calulator was open i can not find how to close it if i opened it while having another window open.
The instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?
I am running Windows 8.1 and IE 11. When I have multiple tabs open and click the X in the upper right hand corner I get an option that asks me if I want to CLOSE ALL TABS - CLOSE CURRENT TAB. I always want to close just one tab. How can I suppress the display of the Close All Tabs - Close Current Tab question and still be able to close just one tab?
Windows 8. I can't find anything except how to change colors via the 'personalization' screen for desktop background etc. You used to be able to change the color of the actual program window background's color but I can't figure it out. Is this not possible anymore?
I have the following issue, i am using Windows 8 administrator account and in it when i try to resize any open window on the desktop - browser, program, explorer, it shows where it will be resized without actually showing content inside until it is resized. Opposing to normal user account with administrative privileges where when you resize something it is instantly shown inside the window so you can see how it will look with that size.
I've just bought a new Dell desktop computer which came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. I like using the new Start menu (Metro) and want to avoid Desktop mode as much as possible now, to avoid confusion and flicking between the two modes repeatedly. My Windows boots into Start (Metro), as I want, and then I open an application, for example Firefox or Outlook. So far so good. However after closing any application, I'm returned to Desktop mode. I then have to click on the Windows logo in the bottom left to return to the new Start menu.
How to boot directly into Desktop mode, how to keep a desktop computer with a keyboard and mouse in Start (Metro) mode. Exiting an application should not return me to Desktop mode, it should return me to Start (Metro) mode.
Almost every morning for the last month or so I will discover my computer is running (monitor off, but computer not in sleep mode as it should be). To figure out what was waking it, I went to cmd prompt and used the command "powercfg -waketimers":
C:WINDOWSsystem32>powercfg -waketimers Timer set by [SERVICE] DeviceHarddiskVolume1WindowsSystem32svchost.exe (Sys temEventsBroker) expires at 4:01:43 AM on 2/23/2014. Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASKMicrosoftWindowsTaskSchedulerRegular Maintenance' scheduled task that requested waking the computer. I also tried "powercfg -lastwake":
[code]...
So it appears that "Regular Maintenance" is waking my computer. But why isn't it returning to sleep? It used to.
I then went to Power Options > Edit Plan Settings. These settings are still correct (Put the computer to sleep: 30 minutes).
Next I checked the Task Scheduler. Under "Active Tasks" I found "Regular Maintenance".
Next run time: 3:53 AM tomorrow. That very closely matches the 4:01 AM listed in "powercfg -waketimers", but I find it odd that it is after the scheduled time.
Triggers: At 3:00 AM every day
Doubling clicking on Regular Maintenance provides more detail.
Last Run Time: 5:46 AM
Last Run Result: operation completed successfully
However, another item in here is "Idle Maintenance".
Triggers: when computer is idle
Last Run Time: 5:46 AM
Last Run Result: The process terminated unexpectedly. (0x8007042B)
All of my drive partitions are scheduled to optimize weekly rather than daily. My computer is waking up daily.
Last night I turned all scheduled optimization off. This morning my computer was again woken from it sleep.
The cmd prompt gives me the same reason for the wake (Regular Maintenance).
Task Scheduler shows Regular Maintenance as:
Last Run Time: This morning at 4:36 AM
Last Run Result: The last run of the task was terminated by the user. (0x41306)
Under Idle Maintenance it shows nothing for this morning.
What does this mean? Optimization ran despite me turning it off?
I purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 OS pre-installed and SKYPE application pre-installed as well.
This new way of Skype behavior is very annoying. How I may return into classical use of Skype, as it was in Windows XP and Windows 7, where I had a Skype shortcut on my desktop and clicking the Shortcut opens the Skype application directly in the desktop.
When Skype in Windows 8 opens in a new lay out feature is very uncomfortable and unfamiliar. how to get back to the previous classical way of behavior for Skype.
Since I've not installed adobe reader, the preinstalled Reader app opened for viewing a pdf file. What is the intended method to close Reader and other metro apps? I don't see any way to do that. I don't expect we are supposed to use Task Manager to close it.
There is two Com surrogates in task manager, they normally used to close automatically when I opened task manager, but now they stay open at all times. Screenshot: Screenshot by Lightshot
I doubleclicked on an MP4 to play it (from Explorer) and this XBox Video thing came up and played it. Fine, looks like a nice player. But when I stopped it wanted to exit the application -- can't find a way.
Oh, I can switch to ANOTHER application, but how the heck do I close this thing down? I could bring up Task Manager and kill it there (I suppose -- haven't even seen if there is still Task Manager, although I assume they would not have gotten rid of that) but there MUST be a simple way to close out an app, right?
(If not I'm going to remove that app and make sure I never accidentally bring it up again).
When modern Apps are closed, they can be made to close to the Start Screen. Is there a way of making Desktop programs do the same. For example: Firefox, my word processor etc.?
When I exit / close [any program / application] I am presented with the old Windows 7 Desktop. Old W7 Desktop is the default when I close a program -- even if I started the program from Metro UI. I wish to see the Metro UI when I close any application. I do not like the extra keyboard press of the Windows key. How can I change Windows 8 such that I default to the Metro UI when I exit [close] any application?
I am using Windows 8.1,I use Internet Explorer in Start-screen, I closed it but when I open again, it openes the page I closed, not my homepage. In the desktop, I set "start with homepage" and I select "detele history when close".Store too, I open Game then I close, I reopen Store, it open Game, not its home.
I just completed a virus and malware removal session over in that forum. The computer is working great except that when I open games or music or camera they open then close and put an icon at the bottom of the screen. I use desk top view. The only game loaded is Microsoft solitare I have never used music or camera.

When I launch things like PDF files from a desktop application, it opens in the tile application of Windows 8. How do I close it and do other functions, like print and save, that I can do with the old desktop version?
Many peoples saying they cant close metro apps from Windows 8.1, and it constantly running.. So I made this video for that.. When u drag your metro apps below, hold it for 2-5 seconds !! and then WOW!!! its close completely!

I discovered that IE (user) - probably 10 as I'm sure I have that - is running in the background and preventing my computer from going to sleep.
I have just installed Windows 8 Pro onto an existing Windows 7 Pro drive allowing dual boot. The problem is whenever Windows 8 is running I hear a sound every now and then. The sound is the "close program" default sound "ring07.wav.
Yesterday did a clean reinstall of Windows because my computer was acting weird. It installed no problem but after a few hours of reinstalling programs I noticed that Windows wasn't activated, so I went to PC Settings and clicked "Activate Windows," but as soon as I clicked it the page closed. I tried again, reset the computer, tried again, but the same thing happens. I've also been getting a few BSODs which I'll make a separate post about, but how to fix the activation error?
1) Firefox always hangs (Not Responding) when I try to close it.
2) Sometimes I am unable to kill the process from Task Manager or Process Explorer (access denied).
3) Sometimes it leaves behind a zombie process that can't be killed. I cannot launch a new Firefox process (it launches but stays hidden). The only solution is to reboot my computer.
4) If I leave Firefox open, after a while it becomes nonresponsive. I usually need to reboot the computer for reason 3 above.
I have seen similar behavior from Internet Explorer and iTunes, but not all the time. I am focusing on Firefox now because the problem is very repeatable.
I have scoured the internet looking for a solution but have come up empty. The Mozilla web site suggests I disable all add-ons, which I have done. This does not fix the problem, so it is something else. I have Norton Antivirus and have scanned my system for problems but it is clean (tried Malwarebytes too, but looks good). I have tried disabling my antivirus software (everything but the firewall) and still get the same problem. I have methodically gone through and made sure all of my drivers are up to date.
I'm setting up a laptop. I have installed Classic Shell, and am working from the desktop.
My problem is that when I open up Google Chrome there are no minimise, restore, or close icons in the upper right corner as there are on my own computer.
That means that every time I do anything, like download and install CCleaner I can't minimise Chrome, I have to close all the Windows one at a time to get back to the desktop to see the install window.
