Setup Installation :: Upgrading From Evaluation Version With Old Key

Jul 2, 2014

I recently went through a ton of issues with my lenovo y510p laptop and since it didn't come with a recovery disc, I was forced to reinstall windows 8 through a recovery disc on a usb stick. However, the only one I was able to get was an "evaluation version" of windows, so I've lost my original version of windows 8 after the reinstall. Is there any way to find my old key so that I can upgrade? I've tried a key finder, but it only finds the evaluation key.

Would I have to contact Lenovo to see if they can give me my product key or is there an easier way?

Debugging :: BSOD Fresh Install Win 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation

Sep 15, 2014

I am working on computer for a coworker. He recently migrated a questionable Windows 7 installation to an SSD and started getting BSOD's pretty frequently. He had been wanting to try Windows 8.1 for a while.

First I attempted to install from a thumb drive and received NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM errors during installation. I tried again with a DVD and received the error once, but was then able to install. All the while I was doing a custom installation and deleting the old volume and creating a new one for the installation.

After the first or second boot to desktop, it BSOD'ed again, but I didn't catch the error code. The last time it happened I recorded an error code of KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. This was after installing Nvidia Drivers from the Nvidia website.

I'm suspecting this is some sort of problem with the SSD itself, as it has persisted through the fresh OS installation. I have attached the SF diagnostic tool file.

Change 8.1 Search Charm To Behave Like 8.0 Version

Nov 27, 2013

I'm sure Microsoft thought they were solving problems by completely changing the search functionality in Windows 8.1. However, I can't possibly be the only person who thinks they've ruined one of the best features of Windows 8, can I?

Before the upgrade, I could start typing in the Start screen, then select where I wanted to search (for example, I could click an app in the list to search within that app, or select files or settings etc.). Furthermore, apps would make use of the search charm, instead of having a search box on-screen all the time. This all made sense - a beautifully simple way to access the function in all apps. In 8.1 there are search boxes stuck on the screen in various locations. Two examples are: Mail, with the search box at the top of the list of emails on the left side, and Wikipedia, with the search box over on the right.

This elegant search function has been overhauled for the worse, IMO. Now, to search the Wikipedia app (for e.g.), I have to first load the app, and then search with the search box, which has added a step. And the universal search now brings up an annoying separate app with all the results across several areas for me to wade through.

OK, rant over. I'm sure many people actually like the new way, and that's fine. But is there any way to restore the old way without downgrading the OS?

Browsers/Mail :: Metro Version Of IE - Change Text Size

Apr 18, 2013

Big drawback with the Metro version of IE is that it doesn't seem possible to change the text size -- on a large monitor using the "Normal" version -- the desktop version of IE I can change the text size at will and zoom the image which I usually have at 150%.

The text size on the Metro version is FAR FAR too small for me on a large monitor -- can see myself needing a "White Stick" if I had to carry on reading like that for too long.

This whole idea of rigid window sizes where you can't zoom seems ridiculous.

Note here -- It MIGHT work on a TOUCH screen by pinching the sides but

1) can't test it as I don't have (or want) a touch screen when I'm working at a Desk.
2) The last thing I want to do is leave smeary finger marks over my nice expensive large LCD screen
3) even if it had touch - I'm sitting far too far away from it to make this a practical method of working to alter text and zoom etc.

(On a Samsung smart phone I don't have problems with text size by pinching the screen - but I'm NOT working on a PHONE when I'm at my desk with a nice large screen).

Setup Installation :: Stuck On Windows 8.1 Evaluation?

May 8, 2014

I've purchased my Lenovo Twist (came with Windows 8.0) about a year ago and I've upgraded to windows 8.1 when it was released in the windows store. Months after I upgraded I ran into a few problems, I was unable to access apps on my metro screen. None of the solutions worked so my only choice was to refresh or reset. I've tried going into the recovery option on boot and the refresh option on the settings both said I needed installation media. I was unable to create a recovery media because the checkbox was grayed out on the "Create a Recovery Drive".

After doing some searching I decided to download the evaluation copy of windows 8.1. I extracted the Install.wim file and set it as my OS image on reagentc.exe. I was still unable to refresh because it said "The drive where windows is installed is locked". The reset option worked, after I completed the reset I was expecting it to bring me back to windows 8.1 instead I was on the evaluation version.

I also noticed that the F11 option on boot disappeared after the reset.

Setup Installation :: Unable To Register Evaluation Copy (Pro Preview) Of 8.1

Jan 3, 2014

I upgraded my computer's OS from W7 to Windows 8 some months ago. Not long after, I upgraded to the preview of the Windows 8.1 Pro. My Windows-license is legit, bought and valid. However, when I returned from my christmas holiday, I noticed the message in picture #2. Fair enough, I thought and proceeded forth.

Clicking 'Get Windows' got me to the screen pictured at #3. Oddly enough, I am unable to click any of the buttons, including Download, Home, Your apps and Your account. I can access the links further down on the page (which aren't included in this screencap) but for some reason I can't press anything else.

When I've tried to access the Windows 8 Store before this problem arised, even before I installed Windows 8.1, I have literally never been able to access the Windows 8 Store (See picture #1).

How do I go from here? I would like to register the Windows 8.1 ...

Updates :: Install Windows 8.1 Enterprise More Than Once On Same PC?

Aug 5, 2014

I want to get started with WP8/8.1 dev and I decided to dual boot on my work laptop (Mac Book).

The problem is I don't want to use my Dreamspark (OEM as far as I know) license on my work PC since it's an academic license if I'm not mistaking and this might cause some problems at work, and I also don't want to activate it on my 6 years old PC since I have some projects still going on and I'm planning on upgrading sometime next year.

So my question(s) is simple: Can I install the 90 days trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise and reinstall again, on same PC after the trial is over?

Second, I tried to run notepad as administrator for the same reason. It wouldn't open. Then, I wanted to start it from an elevated command prompt, but cmd didn't start as admin either. This, like notepad, opened nicely as 'normal', neither as admin.

I run Windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit.

Hardware Drivers :: TAP - Windows Adapter Version 9 Installs Every Boot Up

Aug 19, 2014

Firstly I don't know it this should be in this section or in the network section, but every time I boot up, my reliably monitor always says successful installing of Tap -Windows Adapter Version 9. I've done some research and it apparently comes from installing a VPN software (Which I don't remember).

How to install this driver as about once a week, the driver will appear in the device manger, and I will get an "undefined network" in the network and sharing centre.

The time it does appear in the device manger I right click it and click "uninstall" which it does, but next boot up reliably monitor will say the driver installed, even tho it does not list it in under a device or networking and sharing monitor.

Is there a way to delete it?

I read somewhere, where apparently it was in the registry which I tried to delete but it kept says I did not have permission or something along those lines.
